The Importance Of Doctor Liability In Medical Malpractice Law: China Versus The United States, Vincent R. Johnson Jan 2020

The Importance Of Doctor Liability In Medical Malpractice Law: China Versus The United States, Vincent R. Johnson

St. Mary's Journal on Legal Malpractice & Ethics

Medical malpractice law in China does not work. Disappointed patients and their families, or the gangs they hire, frequently resort to physical violence, beating up doctors and disrupting hospital activities in order to extort settlements. This happens because Chinese law has failed to provide viable remedies to many victims of medical malpractice.

This dysfunctional situation (medical chaos or yinao) has persisted for more than two decades. Today, parents in China discourage their children from attending medical school because practicing medicine is too dangerous.

Reforming Chinese medical malpractice law will be difficult. Many factors contribute to the public’s lack of confidence …

Background: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals face considerable health disparities, often due to a lack of LGBTQ-competent care. Such disparities and lack of access to informed care are even more staggering in rural settings. As the state medical school for the Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho (WWAMI) region, the University of Washington School of Medicine (UWSOM) is in a unique position to train future physicians to provide healthcare that meets the needs of LGBTQ patients both regionally and nationally.

Objective: To describe our methodology of developing a student-driven longitudinal, region-wide curriculum to train medical students to …

Abstract

Teledentistry is an innovative technology that can be used to improve access to care and oral health outcomes. Dental students’ intention to use teledentistry after completing dental school has not been investigated.

Purpose

The unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) was used to predict intentions to use teledentistry among 4th-year U.S. dental students. Methods A cross-sectional approach was performed for a 7-week period in Spring 2019. All U.S. dental schools (N = 66) were invited to participate and 16 schools agreed to participate. An anonymous survey link was emailed to academic deans for dissemination to students. …

Hierarchical Clustering To Predict The Response Of Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy In Patients With Heart Failure, Rukayat Bukola Adeosun Jan 2020

Hierarchical Clustering To Predict The Response Of Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy In Patients With Heart Failure, Rukayat Bukola Adeosun

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

The heterogeneous nature of today’s evolving health databases requires new techniques and approaches to process these data and extract clinically useful information. This relevant information obtained can be used to improve the response rate of cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) in patients with heart failure. Hierarchical clustering (HC) which is an unsupervised ML technique may uncover clusters within the bulk of data of patient population which is useful for strategies towards precision and personalized medicine. This study aims to investigate how HC can be used to automatically group a bulk of clinically acquired CRT data into clusters and subgroups that could …

Predicting Pance Outcomes From First Year Evaluative Measures In A Pbl Curriculum, Anthony Goreczny, Susan Hawkins, John R. Laird

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: Previous research has explored various Physician Assistant (PA) student evaluative measures to see if they have predictive validity with regard to Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam (PANCE) scores. Recent literature has begun to evaluate how measures from the first year of didactic education might be helpful in identifying at-risk individuals early in the program. The purpose of this paper was to extend work in that area within a problem-based learning (PBL) curriculum. Method: Participants included 140 students from two consecutive PA classes. Data were imported regarding each student’s evaluative measures of multiple choice question (MCQ) examinations, patient management assessments …
