Measuring Nursing Students’ Perceptions Of Teamwork In A Multiple Patient Simulation, Christine Seaton, Dnp, Msn
Measuring Nursing Students’ Perceptions Of Teamwork In A Multiple Patient Simulation, Christine Seaton, Dnp, Msn
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background: Simulation based education offers safe, reflective learning opportunities. However, data had not been obtained of nursing students’ perceptions of teamwork performed during Virtual Hospital (VH), a multiple patient simulation.
Objectives: This evaluation gap was addressed using the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s (AHRQ) TeamSTEPPS® Teamwork Perceptions Questionnaire (T-TPQ). The validated survey measures self-reported perceptions of teamwork in communication, mutual support, and situational awareness on a Likert scale from 1 to 5 (AHRQ, 2014).
Methods: A pre-and post, one group design was used to measure perceptions of teamwork. Twenty participants were recruited from students, enrolled in a second-degree undergraduate …

Effectiveness Of Residency Training Programs For Increasing Confidence And Competence Among New Graduate Nurse Practitioners, Heather Parkhill, Dnp, Msn, Fnp-C
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background: Nurse practitioners (NPs) are enrolling in post-graduate residency programs that provide training and mentorship during transition to practice.
Objective: This project explored whether participation in NP residency improved feelings of confidence, competence, preparedness to provide care and job satisfaction among new graduate NPs who completed a residency program compared to new graduate NPs who did not complete a residency program.
Method: This mixed-methods study collected survey data from NPs who attended the 2017 AANP National Conference and two residency programs. A modified Misener Nurse Practitioner Job Satisfaction Scale (MNPJSS) (Misener & Cox, 2001) and Hart’s New Nurse Practitioner Preparedness …

A Qualitative Assessment Of New Graduate Nurse Practitioners First Year Of Practice, Alex Beggs Rn, Msn
Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations
This project serves as a Capstone and final requirement for the Master of Public Health Degree at the University of Southern Maine Muskie School for Public Service. The project is a qualitative inquiry into the experience of new graduate nurse practitioners’ in their first year of practice, and their transition from the registered nurse (RN) into the nurse practitioner (NP) role. Using the theoretical constructs of Benner’s “From Novice to Expert” and the Burch’s “Conscious Competence model” new graduate nurse practitioners’ experiences will be analyzed. Risk and protective factors for role confidence will be identified through the use of qualitative …
The Flipped Classroom: An Active Teaching And Learning Strategy For Making The Sessions More Interactive And Challenging, Amber Shamim Sultan
The Flipped Classroom: An Active Teaching And Learning Strategy For Making The Sessions More Interactive And Challenging, Amber Shamim Sultan
Department for Educational Development
Flipping the classroom is a pedagogical model that employs easy to use, readily accessible technology based resources such as video lectures, reading handouts, and practice problems outside the classroom, whereas interactive group-based, problem-solving activities conducted in the classroom. This strategy permits for an extended range of learning activities during the session. Using class time for active learning provides greater opportunity for mentoring and peer to peer collaboration. Instead of spending too much time on delivering lectures, class time can best be utilized by interacting with students, discussing their concerns related to the particular topic to be taught, providing real life …

Oral Health Convening Focusing On Children With Special Health Care Needs, Health Justice Alliance
HJA Scholarship
Barriers to good oral health care pose a significant health threat to low-income individuals and families, which in extreme cases can result in fatal consequences. Lack of good oral health may also negatively impact social function and interaction, limiting verbal and nonverbal communication, and interfering with intimacy, nutrition, and sleep. Often ignored, oral care is the most prevalent unmet health care need among children and adolescents, and tooth decay is the most chronic illness in school-age children. Within this already vulnerable group, children with special health care needs (CSHCN) are especially at risk for a variety of economic, social, environmental, …

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Background: The growing prevalence of hypertension (HTN), diabetes mellitus (DM), and in Mexico highlights the need for preventative health care services. Rural communities worldwide lack access to such services. The purpose of this study was to describe the prevalence of HTN, DM, and dyslipidemia in student-run screening clinics in rural communities of the Sierra Norte of Puebla, Mexico to better understand the role the clinics play for the patients served.
Methods: Data were collected from patients from rural, Mexican towns participating in free pharmacy student-run screening clinics. Patients consented to have their de-identified information pooled for re-search. Screenings …

Informatics: Rn To Bsn Students’ Perceived Competence, Cathy Abell, Tonya Bragg-Underwood, Lori Alexander
Informatics: Rn To Bsn Students’ Perceived Competence, Cathy Abell, Tonya Bragg-Underwood, Lori Alexander
Nursing Faculty Publications
Background: Nurses utilize informatics to aide in providing safe, quality care to patients across the lifespan in a variety of settings; therefore, it is important that nurses have knowledge of nursing informatics. Nurses entering RN to BSN completion programs bring a range of clinical experience which often includes application of informatics. This poses a challenge for nursing faculty in designing programs to meet the needs of this specific population regarding informatics.Method: In this descriptive correlational research study, data were collected from a convenience sample of RN to BSN students using a demographic questionnaire and the Nursing Informatics Competency Assessment Tool …

Integrating Information Literacy And Evidence-Based Medicine Content Within A New School Of Medicine Curriculum: Process And Outcome, Joanne M. Muellenbach, Kathryn M. Houk, Dana E. Thimons, Bredny Rodriguez
Library Faculty Research
This column describes a process for integrating information literacy (IL) and evidence-based medicine (EBM) content within a new school of medicine curriculum. The project was a collaborative effort among health sciences librarians, curriculum deans, directors, and faculty. The health sciences librarians became members of the curriculum committees, developed a successful proposal for IL and EBM content within the curriculum, and were invited to become course instructors for Analytics in Medicine. As course instructors, the librarians worked with the other faculty instructors to design and deliver active learning class sessions based on a flipped classroom approach using a proprietary Information Mastery …
