Exploring The Relationship Between Family Social Capital And Utilization Of Well Child Preventative Health Care Services, Kristi K. Westphaln Apr 2018

Exploring The Relationship Between Family Social Capital And Utilization Of Well Child Preventative Health Care Services, Kristi K. Westphaln

Dissertations

Background: Passage of the Affordable Health Care Act of 2010 increased insurance coverage for children, however possession of health care insurance doesn’t always equate to effective use of health care services. Misuse and underutilization of health care homes is associated with higher costs, fragmentation of health care, and poor health outcomes across the lifespan. Along with reliance upon the health care system, child health and well-being are dependent upon social factors such as interactions with caregivers and communities. Family social capital (FSC) addresses the interrelated nature of child health and family interaction while also promoting family cohesion as currency …

Faculty of Health Sciences, East Africa

Background:

Maternal and infant mortality rates in Tanzania have decreased over the past decades, but remain high. One of the challenges the country faces, is the lack of skilled health care workers. High fertility rates make midwives and their patients particularly susceptible to stress as a result of understaffing.

Objective:

This paper explores the challenges midwives face in their day-to-day practice at a regional referral hospital in Tanzania, and investigates which measures the midwives themselves find necessary to implement to improve their situation.

Methods:

A qualitative study design with focus group discussions (FGDs) was employed to explore which challenges the …

Scholars Week

It has been proposed that by initiating the highest percentages of nursing compliance, overall patient outcomes will improve along with a decrease in the number of ventilator-associated events (VAEs). The aim of the study is to appraise the association between nursing compliance with a ventilator bundle and a successful decline in the number of events of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) in the intensive care unit (ICU). The study also provides evidence-based direction on the best nursing practices essential to reducing the rates of VAP. Objectives include expanding the awareness of critical care staff on prevention and compliance and to improve teamwork …

Improving Admission Medication Reconciliation Completion At Gw Hospital, Amanda Nizam, Andrew Shelton, Dembi Iyekegbe, Matthew Cichocki, Puya Jafari, Paul Pickmans, Jessica Logan, Cherinne Arundel

GW Research Days 2016 - 2020

Background: Medication errors represent a major cause of adverse events in hospitalized inpatients. 27-83% of hospitalized patients will have at least one discrepancy in their medication history at admission, with 11%–59% of errors having clinical importance. Current processes for completing admission medication reconciliations are ill-defined, further increasing the risk of errors. Implementation of a standardized medication reconciliation process has led to a reduction in medication errors. Aim Statement: To increase the number of admission medication reconciliations completed within 48 hours of admission to GW Hospital by 25% over three months. Methods: From September 2017 until December 2017, an educational intervention …

Enriching The Medical Student Radiology Clerkship: Simulating The Radiologist’S Experience, Liqi Shu, Faraien Bahri, Navid Mostaghni, Ramin Javan

GW Research Days 2016 - 2020

Background

Current radiology training in medical schools is still predominantly limited to passively observing the radiologist at the workstation and through lectures, textbooks and online sources. Evaluation is also mainly limited on still image interpretation or knowledge-based multiple-choice questions. Furthermore, students may have specific interests based on their choice of residency. In order to create a tailored and active learning experience, and to evaluate students’ ability in image interpretation, we utilized an open-source web-based Picture archiving and communication system (PACS) named "Weasis" and integrated a report system.

Method

We establish a new PACS teaching system by utilizing the open-source PACS …
