Publications and Research

Background: Drug dosing errors result in adverse patient outcomes and are more common in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). As internists treat the majority of patients with CKD, we study if Internal Medicine house-staff have awareness and knowledge about the correct dosage of commonly used medications for those with CKD. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was performed and included 341 participants. The outcomes were the awareness of whether a medication needs dose adjustment in patients with CKD and whether there was knowledge for the level of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) a medication needs to be adjusted. Results: The overall pattern …

This list of resources was designed to complement a project funded by the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) New England Region (NER) entitled “Empathy Learned Through an Extended Medical Education Virtual Reality Project." The project used a virtual reality (VR) experience for 1st year medical students developed by Embodied Labs. The interactive “Alfred Lab” immerses users in the story of a 74-year-old patient who has macular degeneration and hearing loss, allowing users to experience these conditions from the patient’s perspective as he interacts with his family and doctor.

Parts Of The Whole: Error Estimation For Science Students, Dorothy Wallace Jan 2017

Parts Of The Whole: Error Estimation For Science Students, Dorothy Wallace

Numeracy

It is important for science students to understand not only how to estimate error sizes in measurement data, but also to see how these errors contribute to errors in conclusions they may make about the data. Relatively small errors in measurement, errors in assumptions, and roundoff errors in computation may result in large error bounds on computed quantities of interest. In this column, we look closely at a standard method for measuring the volume of cancer tumor xenografts to see how small errors in each of these three factors may contribute to relatively large observed errors in recorded tumor volumes.

End-Of-Life Training In Us Internal Medicine Residency Programs: A National Study, Derek Cegelka, Timothy R. Jordan, Jiunn-Jye Sheu, Joseph A. Dake, Ragheb Assaly

Faculty Publications

Background: End-of-life care is a required and important component of medical training for internal medicine residents; many of whom will go on to provide care for adults at the end-of-life stage. Although a body of past research suggests that physician training in end-of-life care needs significant improvement, a comprehensive national study of end-of-life education within US internal medicine residency programs has never been published.

Objective: To determine the status of end-of-life education in internal medicine residency programs in the United States.

Method: The study was a cross-sectional, observational study of all internal medicine Residency Program Directors in the US as …

Clarifying The Need For Inpatient Medication Education, Pamela Cox Raffaldt Jan 2017

Clarifying The Need For Inpatient Medication Education, Pamela Cox Raffaldt

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

Low health literacy is a problem for millions of Americans resulting in increased use of avoidable healthcare resources and poor health outcomes. Use of pharmaceutical regimens to manage acute and chronic health issues is the most common treatment modality. Unfortunately, people with low health literacy may have trouble understanding and following provider instructions; reading and following directions on medication bottles, either prescribed and/or over the counter; and identifying proper reasons for taking a medication. The purpose of this study was to increase patient self-agency for the treatment and management of acute and chronic health conditions through medication education. Providing medication …

Effect Of A Student Success Program On The Academic Success Of First Semester Junior Bsn Students, Ann Hardison Black Jan 2017

Effect Of A Student Success Program On The Academic Success Of First Semester Junior Bsn Students, Ann Hardison Black

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

Problem: The expectation of the current nurse workforce is to deliver safe quality care while meeting the demands of an ever-changing healthcare system. More nurses are needed to combat the ongoing nursing shortage, as Baby Boomers reach retirement and the need for health care continues to rise. The healthcare industry has a vested interest in schools of nursing graduation rates as they impact the needed supply of nurses to fill vacant positions. Multiple variables collectively influence student success in a nursing program. Many students do not realize the rigor of a nursing curriculum until they are in the midst of …

Characteristics Of Multi-Institutional Health Sciences Education Research: A Systematic Review, Jocelyn Schiller, Gary L. Dallaghan, Terry Kind, Heather Mclauchlan, Joseph Gigante, Sherilyn Smith

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

Objectives: Multi-institutional research increases the generalizability of research findings. However, little is known about characteristics of collaborations across institutions in health sciences education research. Using a systematic review process, the authors describe characteristics of published, peer-reviewed multi-institutional health sciences education research to inform educators who are considering such projects.

Methods: Two medical librarians searched MEDLINE, the Education Resources Information Center (ERIC), EMBASE, and CINAHL databases for English-language studies published between 2004 and 2013 using keyword terms related to multi-institutional systems and health sciences education. Teams of two authors reviewed each study and resolved coding discrepancies through consensus. Collected data points …

Liberia : Maternal Health & Ebola, Chelsey Hernandez

Global Public Health

Throughout the world, many low-income countries suffer from poor nutrition, lack of health resources, and little to no access to other valuable resources. Previous research has demonstrated the poor state of health in Liberia as a result of these various socioeconomic factors. Although Liberia faces many public health issues, the 2014 Ebola epidemic reversed whatever progress was made. Maternal and child health in particular has severely decreased, especially in recent years. This brief focuses on the impact of the 2014 Ebola epidemic had on maternal health.

Learning By Doing: The Md-Pa Interprofessional Education Rural Rotation, Ryan Palmer, Curt Stilp Jan 2017

Learning By Doing: The Md-Pa Interprofessional Education Rural Rotation, Ryan Palmer, Curt Stilp

Faculty Publications - College of Medical Science

While much investment has gone into developing interprofessional education (IPE) curriculum for healthcare professional students, many of these efforts have focused on classroom rather than clinical environments. Implementing robust IPE experiences into clinical training is often complicated by obstacles such as differing rotating schedules and differing curricular requirements. The Combined Medical-Physician Assistant Student Rural Rotation (Med-PARR) at the Oregon Health and Science University takes a practical approach to these challenges. Med-PARR students participate in focused IPE activities that overlay, or 'float', on top of each trainee's profession-specific curricular requirements. Through critical reflection, goal setting, and a community-based project, students get …

The Calm Project: Teaching Mindfulness Meditation In Primary Care Using Computer-Based Application, Vanessa Norton Jan 2017

The Calm Project: Teaching Mindfulness Meditation In Primary Care Using Computer-Based Application, Vanessa Norton

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

Mindfulness-based interventions (MBI) have been studied extensively and the evidence is now credible that even brief techniques, delivered electronically using web-based applications (apps), easily accessed by smart phone, computer, or tablet, are consistently effective at anxiety reduction as well demonstrating efficacy in other commonly occurring comorbidities such as depression, stress, and panic symptoms. The purpose of this DNP project was to examine feasibility and the effect of the app, Calm.com, on anxious adult patients in primary care, using the Recovery Alliance Theory as its theoretical foundation. This pilot study was longitudinal, using a pre-test/post-test measurement of the Generalized Anxiety Disorder …

Hospice And Palliative Care: Imperative To The Education Of Nursing, Crystal Lynn Jordan

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

Many advanced practice nursing programs do not have hospice and palliative care content included in their curricula. Reviewing the literature regarding the nature of hospice and palliative care content in advanced practice nursing curricula revealed few published studies. Rather than a small snapshot of what end-of-life care entails, it is vital to integrate end-of-life care into every aspect taught in advance practice nursing school. The purpose of this thesis was ascertain the nature of hospice and palliative care content contained in advanced practice nursing curricula. A survey was sent to advance practice nursing program directors asking for information related to …

Contextualizing The Relevance Of Basic Sciences: Small-Group Simulation With Debrief For First- And Second-Year Medical Students In An Integrated Curriculum., S. B. Ginzburg, J. Brenner, M. Cassara, T. Kwiatkowski, J. M. Willey

Journal Articles

There has been a call for increased integration of basic and clinical sciences during preclinical years of undergraduate medical education. Despite the recognition that clinical simulation is an effective pedagogical tool, little has been reported on its use to demonstrate the relevance of basic science principles to the practice of clinical medicine. We hypothesized that simulation with an integrated science and clinical debrief used with early learners would illustrate the importance of basic science principles in clinical diagnosis and management of patients.Small groups of first- and second-year medical students were engaged in a high-fidelity simulation followed by a comprehensive debrief …

Training Us Health Care Professionals On Human Trafficking: Where Do We Go From Here?, Clydette Powell, Kirsten Dickins, Hanni Stoklosa

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

Some 21 million adults and children are labor-trafficked or sex-trafficked through force, fraud, or coercion. In recognition of the interface between trafficking victims and the healthcare setting, over the last 10 years there has been a notable increase in training of health care professionals (HCPs) on human trafficking (HT) and its health implications. Many organizations have developed curricula and offered training in various clinical settings. However, methods and content of this education on trafficking vary widely, and there is little evaluation of the impact of the training. The goal of this study was to assess the gaps and strengths in …
