Effect Of Handoff Skills Training For Students During The Medicine Clerkship: A Quasi-Randomized Study, Juan A. Reyes, Larrie W. Greenberg, Richard L. Amdur, James Gehring, Linda Lesky

Medicine Faculty Publications

Continuity is critical for safe patient care and its absence is associated with adverse outcomes. Continuity requires handoffs between physicians, but most published studies of educational interventions to improve handoffs have focused primarily on residents, despite interns expected to being proficient. The AAMC core entrustable activities for graduating medical students includes handoffs as a milestone, but no controlled studies with students have assessed the impact of training in handoff skills. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of an educational intervention to improve third-year medical student handoff skills, the durability of learned skills into the fourth year, …

Hospice Home Immersion Project: Advancing Medical Education, Marilyn R. Gugliucci, Himanshu Malhotra, Andrea Gaul

Geriatric Medicine Faculty Publications

The University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNECOM) Hospice Immersion project was piloted in 2014 in southern Maine. It was designed and implemented as an experiential medical education learning model whereby medical students were “admitted” into the local Hospice Home to live there for 48 hours. Until this project, palliative and end of life care education at US Medical Schools and specifically UNECOM were accomplished through traditional medical education methods. The Hospice Immersion project utilizes qualitative ethnographic and autobiographic research designs, whereby a unique environment or “culture” (Hospice Home) is observed and life experiences of the medical student …

The Human Rights And Social Justice Scholars Program: A Collaborative Model For Preclinical Training In Social Medicine, Salina Bakshi, Aisha James, Marie Oliva Hennelly, Reena Karani, Ann-Gel Palermo, Andrea Jakubowski, Chloe Ciccariello, Holly G. Atkinson

Publications and Research

BACKGROUND:
Despite the importance of the role social justice takes in medical professionalism, the need to train health professionals to address social determinants of health, and medical trainees' desire to eliminate health disparities, undergraduate medical education offers few opportunities for comprehensive training in social justice. The Human Rights and Social Justice (HRSJ) Scholars Program at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is a preclinical training program in social medicine consisting of 5 components: a didactic course, faculty and student mentorship, research projects in social justice, longitudinal policy and advocacy service projects, and a career seminar series.

OBJECTIVES:
The …

Differ In Socio-Cognitive Processes? Some Comparisons Between Paper And Video Triggered Pbl, Jingyan Lu, Lap Ki Chan Feb 2015

Differ In Socio-Cognitive Processes? Some Comparisons Between Paper And Video Triggered Pbl, Jingyan Lu, Lap Ki Chan

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

This paper investigates whether paper and video triggers stimulate different social and cognitive processes during PBL. The study focused on how medical students identified and described problems, and how they built shared cognitions that lead them to diagnose and solve problems. The results showed that students who used video triggers put more effort into communicating their understanding of the problem and relevant knowledge than students who used paper triggers. The findings contribute to discussions on how to evaluate the effectiveness of different PBL triggers in order to better integrate them into the curriculum.

Does Music Directly Affect A Person’S Heart Rate?, David Sills, Amber Todd

Medical Education Faculty Publications

Music can have a profound effect on a person’s body, in that it may cause people to dance and move around, but does it have a direct and significant effect on a person’s heart rate if they are still? In this study, 24 high school students’ heart rates were recorded while listening to 6 selections of 6 different genres of music. The effect of different types of music was tested using heart rate monitors, data collection software, and music from free music archives. We found that music has a significant impact on heart rate. Average heart rates were significantly higher …

The Template Of Events For Applied And Critical Healthcare Simulation (Teach Sim): A Tool For Systematic Simulation Scenario Design, Lauren E. Benishek, Elizabeth H. Lazzara, William L. Gaught, Lygia L. Arcaro, Okuda Yasuharu, Eduardo Salas

Publications

Simulation-based training (SBT) affords practice opportunities for improving the quality of clinicians’ technical and nontechnical skills. However, the development of practice scenarios is a process plagued by a set of challenges that must be addressed for the full learning potential of SBT to be realized. Scenario templates are useful tools for assisting with SBT and navigating its inherent challenges. This article describes existing SBT templates, explores considerations in choosing an appropriate template, and introduces the Template of Events for Applied and Critical Healthcare Simulation (TEACH Sim) as a tool for facilitating the formation of practice scenarios in accordance with an …

Department of Education

Live for a little over two years, Lehigh Valley Health Network’s repository, LVHN Scholarly Works, has enhanced the Network’s reputation and research credibility by increasing the visibility of its scholarship. In addition to enhancing the Network’s reputation, LVHN Scholarly Works has been instrumental in saving time and easing workflows for several of its residency programs as well as for ACGME accreditation, and has even contributed to filling in missing pieces of institutional history. As the initiative moves forward, the library continues to look for ways to further increase the visibility of LVHN’s scholarship and help to solve other challenges.
