Objective: The purpose of the study was to evaluate whether formative testing from iRAT and MCQ data was predictive of final exam scores for the Staying Alive course at WSU BSOM. Methods: Data was collected from two consecutive classes of first-year medical students (n=234). Data included students’ formative quiz scores (iRAT), formative exam scores (MCQ), final exam scores (NBME), race, and gender. Three regression models were created to analyze the relationship between formative and final scores. Implementing Peer Instruction In Medical Education And The Impact On Student Success, Alexander Chase

Scholarship in Medicine - All Papers

In 1991, a physicist at Harvard University, Dr. Eric Mazur, implemented a new style of classroom learning into his introductory physics courses named Peer Instruction.1 The objective of Peer Instruction (PI) was to engage students in interactive discussion throughout the time spent in the classroom. In the PI format, students were assigned reading that was then tested at the start of each class through a reading quiz. Dr. Mazur then spent the remainder of class quizzing his students with questions that were designed to highlight the important aspects of the material in question. All students were required to participate by …

To date, there has been a lack of professional development opportunities for clerkship administrators.

Methods: In 2003, the Central Group on Educational Affairs of the Association of American Medical Colleges recognized a need for professional development for clerkship administrators. Preparing Learners For Learning In The Engaged Learning Classroom, Maryam Alizadeh, Dean Parmelee, Irina Overman, Mohamad Aljasem

Medical Education Faculty Publications

This set of Tips is written to make the best use of an Engaged Learning Classroom (ELC), which some may refer to as the ‘flipped classroom.’ Strategies for the ELC include Team-Based Learning (TBL), Peer Instruction (PI), Case-Based Learning (CBL). Our focus will be on the design and implementation of the out-of-class phase for any ELC activity since this is as important as the in-class phase, but often neglected. Experience has shown that the quality of learning from the ELC is highly dependent on the preparation before, and follow-up to the class session. The instructor’s designation of material (written, audio-visual, …

The Relationship Between Advanced Degrees And Performance On Usmle Step 1, Martha E. Orozco Cortes

Scholarship in Medicine - All Papers

While previous studies have analyzed the relationship of pre-admission factors on USMLE Step 1 scores few studies have looked at the effects obtaining a graduate degree prior to medical school matriculation. Therefore, this study sought to determine if there was an advantage between obtaining a graduate degree before medical school when it came to step 1 board scores. This retrospective study analyzed step 1 scores and medical school application data from 718 students who matriculated at a public midwestern medical school between 2014 and 2016. A combination of analyzes of variance, chi-square tests, and multiple regression analyses were used. When …

Success Of Non-Traditional Students In Medical School, Rebecca A. Nowak

Scholarship in Medicine - All Papers

The demographics of United States medical schools are changing to include an increasing number of older students, men and women who have switched careers into medicine, those with post-graduate degrees before starting medical school, and other diverse backgrounds. These “non-traditional” students today are still a minority (an annual questionnaire sent out to matriculating medical students by the Association of American Medical Colleges last year showed as many as 90% of students knew they wanted to study medicine by the end of undergraduate1) but make up a growing slice of the demographics of current U.S. medical students. Much research …

Examining The Relationship Between Medical Student Satisfaction And Academic Performance In A Pre-Clinical, Flipped-Classroom Curriculum, Matthew J. Mackey

Scholarship in Medicine - All Papers

Medical schools are tasked with the responsibility of facilitating the acquisition of the specific vernacular, skill set, and reasoning capabilities of a physician for a group of individuals with a mélange of diverse experiences. Determining the best methods to train physicians is thus a challenge for those in medical education. Starting with the class of 2021, flipped classroom teaching and learning activities dominate Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine’s (WSU-BSOM) curriculum for MS1s and MS2s. This new curriculum is under constant evaluation to make sure it is best serving Boonshoft students. However, evaluating student evaluations on course satisfaction is …

A Closer Look At The Items Within Three Measures Of Evolution Acceptance: Analysis Of The Mate, I-Sea, And Gaene As A Single Corpus Of Items, William L. Romine, Amber Todd, Emily M. Walter

Medical Education Faculty Publications

Background: Current direct Likert measures for evolution acceptance include the MATE, GAENE, and I-SEA. Pros and cons of each of these instruments have been debated, and yet there is a dearth of research teasing out their similarities and differences when they are used together in a single context beyond the fact that their measures tend to be highly correlated. We administered these to 452 college students in non-major biology classes at two research-intensive universities from the Midwestern and Western United States to investigate the measurement properties of the items within these instruments when combined as a single corpus. Results: Factor analysis …
