Experiences Following Previous Sexual Trauma Of Female Skmc Students, Haritha Reddy, Rickie Brawer, Phd
Experiences Following Previous Sexual Trauma Of Female Skmc Students, Haritha Reddy, Rickie Brawer, Phd
Phase 1
Introduction:
Sexual trauma is one of the greatest contributors to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and women are more likely to develop PTSD than men. In focusing on these long-lasting negative mental health outcomes, many study populations involving sexual trauma consist of college-educated females since this demographic is vulnerable to various stressors. However, information regarding methods of resilience employed by these individuals is lacking.
Objective:
The purpose of this project is to identify key elements of resilience in female Sidney Kimmel Medical College (SKMC) students who have experienced sexual trauma prior to entering medical school.
Methods:
Given the perseverance necessary for …

Common Practice For Behavioral Health Screening In Pediatric Primary Care Settings, Joseph A. Menand, Mario Cruz, Md
Phase 1
Mental health disorders in the United States are highly prevalent, affecting 14-20% of children yearly. Only 25-35% receive treatment after on average a six-plus year delay from symptom onset. Current recommendations suggest primary care physicians/providers (PCP) manage mental health conditions, however, PCPs are wary, citing lack of time, training and resources. This study evaluated pediatric/adolescent PCPs using a self-report questionnaire assessing knowledge/skill, clinical practice (e.g. screening tool) and perceived barriers when managing attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety and depression (N = 11). Self-reported knowledge/skill diagnosing, treating and referring each disorder were recorded on a 5-point Likert scale and evaluated using …

Perspectives Of Asian/Pacific Islanders On Lung Cancer Screening In Philadelphia: A Qualitative Study, Melissa Chai, Kristine Pham, Mph, Rickie Brawer, Phd, Mph, Mches
Phase 1
Introduction: Even though rates of smoking, the leading cause of cancer, are lower in Asian/Pacific Islanders (API), the rates of lung cancer deaths are still one of the highest compared to those of other minority groups in the US. However, little is known about the beliefs and attitudes that influence lung cancer screening behaviors of APIs.
Objective: The objective of this study is to better understand the current beliefs, attitudes, and knowledge of APIs in Philadelphia towards lung cancer and lung cancer screening.
Methods: Six in-depth interviews were conducted with key informants, who all had extensive experience working with the …

Total Body Skin Exams: Sensitivity, Specificity, And Number Needed To Screen, Shayan Waseh, Michael Bui, Audra Hugo, Alexander Sherban, Elizabeth Jones, Md
Phase 1
Introduction: Skin cancer, the most common form of cancer worldwide, has one of the highest cure rates among cancers if diagnosed and treated early in its course. The Total Body Skin Exam (TBSE) is the primary modality used to screen for skin cancers. Currently, few studies have characterized the effectiveness of the TBSE in contemporary populations.
Objective: Characterizing the number-needed-to-screen (NNS) to diagnose a case of skin cancer through TBSEs will make it possible to better understand its effectiveness as a screening modality and its utility in an increasingly population health-based healthcare system.
Methods: A retrospective chart review of 3155 …
Economic Impact And Health Disparities Of Firearm Injuries Treated Within The Thomas Jefferson University Health System, Christina Wohler, Stanton Miller, Md
Economic Impact And Health Disparities Of Firearm Injuries Treated Within The Thomas Jefferson University Health System, Christina Wohler, Stanton Miller, Md
Phase 1
Introduction:
Firearms are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. In 2015, firearms killed over 36,000 Americans (CDC, 2017), and in 2013 were responsible for $229 billion in healthcare and other costs (Cerdá 2016). On an average day in Philadelphia, 4 people are injured or killed by firearms (Beard 2017). This purpose of this project is to further investigate these trends in the context of the Thomas Jefferson University Health System.
Objective:
To date, no research exists to examine firearm violence within the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (TJUH) System. The purpose of this study is to …

Mining For Voices: Reframing Hydraulic Fracturing As A Public Health Issue, Benjamin Chipkin, Ms, Pouné Saberi, Md, Mph
Phase 1
Introduction: Hydraulic fracturing extracts fossil fuels from rock formations by injecting chemicals underground. While 80% of studies demonstrate risks or actual harms to health from fracking, Pennsylvania does not require chemical disclosures. Fracking accelerates climate change, a phenomenon linked to increases in health emergencies. With 1.6 million Pennsylvanians living within 1 mile of active oil or gas development sites, there is considerable risk. In 2012, Pennsylvania banned physicians from discussing health impacts of fracking, an order struck down in 2016. Following the gag order, deficits in physician knowledge and urgency may remain around fracking. Outlining a precautionary approach to fracking …

The Jefferson Scale of Empathy (JSE) is a broadly used instrument developed to measure empathy in the context of health professions education and patient care. Evidence in support of psychometrics of the JSE has been reported in health professions students and practitioners with the exception of osteopathic medical students. This study was designed to examine measurement properties, underlying components, and latent variable structure of the JSE in a nationwide sample of first-year matriculants at U.S. colleges of osteopathic medicine, and to develop a national norm table for the assessment of JSE scores. A web-based survey was administered at the beginning …

A Three-Dimensional Printed Low-Cost Anterior Shoulder Dislocation Model For Ultrasound-Guided Injection Training., Zachary Risler, Mark A. Magee, Jacob M. Mazza, Kelly Goodsell, Arthur K. Au, Resa E. Lewiss, Robert S. Pugliese, Bon Ku
Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers
Anterior shoulder dislocations are the most common, large joint dislocations that present to the emergency department (ED). Numerous studies support the use of intraarticular local anesthetic injections for the safe, effective, and time-saving reduction of these dislocations. Simulation training is an alternative and effective method for training compared to bedside learning. There are no commercially available ultrasound-compatible shoulder dislocation models. We utilized a three-dimensional (3D) printer to print a model that allows the visualization of the ultrasound anatomy (sonoanatomy) of an anterior shoulder dislocation. We utilized an open-source file of a shoulder, available from embodi3D® (Bellevue, WA, US). After …

We are delighted to present you with the 19th annual edition of The Medicine Forum. Here in the birthplace of our nation, we like to think of The Medicine Forum as being of the housestaff, by the housestaff and for the housestaff. Undeniably, this publication would not be possible without the countless hours dedicated by our residents, students, fellows and faculty.

Background
During the 2017-2018 academic year, a large private medical college underwent a complete transformation of its curriculum from a primarily lecture based, traditional format to an integrated, longitudinal format that included both time limited blocks and longitudinal threads of content. Wellness, conceptualized at both wellness of the provider and the patient, is one of the eight threads.
Goals
- Provide a structured pause in medical school for you to reflect on your own wellness
- Allow time to explore the ideas of resilience
- Provide time for rejuvenation
- Allow you to start building productive habits to last you throughout your entire medical …

The 2017 Association of Pathology Chairs Annual Meeting included a session for department chairs and other department leaders on "how to deal with deans and academic medical center leadership." The session was focused on discussing ways to foster positive relationships with university, medical school, and health system leaders, and productively address issues and opportunities with them. Presentations and a panel discussion were provided by 4 former pathology chairs who subsequently have served as medical deans and in other leadership positions including university provost, medical center CEO, and health system board chair. There was a strong consensus among the participants on …

Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior Faculty Papers
The prominence of reciprocal understanding in patient–doctor empathic engagement implies that patient perception of clinician’s empathy has an important role in the assessment of the patient–clinician relationship. In response to a need for an assessment tool to measure patient’s views of clinician empathy, we developed a brief (5-item) instrument, the Jefferson Scale of Patient Perceptions of Physician Empathy (JSPPPE). This review article reports evidence in support of the validity and reliability of the JSPPPE.
