The Use Of Embark In Teaching About Genetic Relatedness, Anna Bonvillain, Tori Trammel
The Use Of Embark In Teaching About Genetic Relatedness, Anna Bonvillain, Tori Trammel
Honors Theses
Because of the increasing importance of precision medicine, it is vital that future healthcare providers master concepts related to genetic variation taught during their undergraduate classes. However, studies have shown that physicians often lack an adequate understanding of genetics, which serves as a hindrance to effectively caring for their patients. To address this issue, we created a collaborative active-learning protocol to improve pre-health students' comprehension of key concepts such as genetic relatedness and the source of genetic variation between siblings. Our worksheet guides students to compare the genetic profiles of two canine siblings using the Embark DNA genotyping platform. Embark …

Cases From A Community Hospital… Jchimp Series #1: 55-Year-Old Male With Acute Pe Who Developed Persistent Epistaxis., Jerrica N. Mueller, Bobby Mathew, Douglas D. Reh, Joseph Fuscaldo
Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives
This is the first in a new series of case reports that will present real scenarios from our community hospital. The cases are chosen to highlight clinical dilemmas and offer review and perspective on what is currently known about the topic. We present the case of a 55-year-old Caucasian male who presented to the emergency department of our community hospital for worsening dyspnea. Evaluation in the Emergency department revealed a diagnosis of extensive pulmonary emboli in the pulmonary vasculature. The patient was admitted to the ICU. A clinical decision was made to initiate treatment with low-dose tissue plasminogen activator (tpa) …

Additive Manufacturing Of Variable Contrast Computed Tomography Anatomical Phantoms Using A Single Feedstock In Fused Filament Fabrication, Cory J. Darling
Additive Manufacturing Of Variable Contrast Computed Tomography Anatomical Phantoms Using A Single Feedstock In Fused Filament Fabrication, Cory J. Darling
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Anatomical phantoms used in biomedical education and training benefit greatly from Fused filament fabrication’s (FFF) ability to rapidly produce complex and unique models. Current materials and methods used in FFF have limited ability to accurately produce phantoms that can mimic the radiological properties of multiple biological tissues. This research demonstrates that the CT contrast of FFF produced models can be modified by varying the concentration of bismuth oxide in acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) filaments and a tunable CT contrast that mimics the CT contrast ranging from fatty tissue to cortical bone using a single composite filament without introducing artificial image …

We're Virtually There: Providing Health Sciences Education And Wellness Through Virtual Reality Experiences, Gail M. Kouame
University Faculty and Staff Publications
This is a presentation by Gail Kouame for the MLA 2022 Annual Meeting. This presentation describes two virtual reality projects undertaken by the Greenblatt Library at Augusta University in Augusta, Georgia. The first project is one that her two co-authors, Jenn Davis and Lachelle Smith, initiated. Jenn is the Data and Scholarship Librarian and Lachelle is the Allied Health Sciences Librarian. They wanted to figure out a way to introduce concepts surrounding data literacy and data management in a more engaging way. The primary objective of this project is to instruct graduate students in the health sciences disciplines on how …

Impact Of A Novel Interdisciplinary Online Course: Student Perspectives Related To Pandemics And Covid-19, Anna Russ
ONU Student Research Colloquium
Misinformation regarding COVID-19 has clouded the judgment and perspectives of many individuals. At Ohio Northern University, a new interdisciplinary online elective course offers students the opportunity to gain evidence-based insight about the far-reaching implications of pandemics and COVID-19. The purpose of this project is to evaluate the impact that this course has made on student perspectives relating to various topics about pandemics and COVID-19.
This semester-long online elective course was taught in an interdisciplinary fashion by professors from different departments and disciplines within Ohio Northern University. Topics covered included: the history of pandemics; public health and healthcare response; COVID-19 transmission, …

The Parkinson's Wellness Project: An 8-Part Educational Video Series, Samantha L. Stevenson
OTD Capstone Projects
The Parkinson’s Wellness Project is an 8-part educational video series created by Samantha Stevenson, a student in Belmont University’s Doctorate Program in Occupational Therapy. Purpose: This project was created to benefit all persons with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and their care partners who attend Rocksteady Boxing (RSB) in Franklin/Nashville, TN. Methodology: The student conducted research to identify the salient issues experienced by people living with PD. The issues were then synthesized into 8 separate categories including the following: facial expression, mental health, sexual health, self-care, sleep, diet and nutrition, meditation, and postural alignment. Experts in the healthcare field produced specialized content …

Genetic Testing For Non-Major Biology Students, Taylor Banton
Genetic Testing For Non-Major Biology Students, Taylor Banton
Honors Projects
The goal of this Honors Project is to teach non-major biology students (BIOL-100) the concept of genetic testing and the importance of interpreting genetic results. I created a lab manual, a PowerPoint presentation, and quiz assessments to help students easily understand the material while also performing lab techniques that are crucial to scientific research. This is a two-week lab where students will test their own DNA and interpret the results using PCR and gel electrophoresis. In the lab at school, students cannot obtain real genetic results because the lab focuses on a portion of the genome that is not used …

Psycho-Emotional Education For Occupational Therapists Supporting Individuals Assuming The Role Of Family-Caregiver For People With A Traumatic Brain Injury (Tbi), Laura Dawn Lippman, Caitlyn E. Baird, Natalie L. Billharz
2022 Celebration of Scholarly Works
The purpose of this research was to identify the psycho-emotional needs of family-caregivers of individuals who sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI), and measure if there was a change in knowledge among occupational therapists, and occupational therapy students following a two-hour seminar covering topics identified in the literature. The topics covered in the seminar included the concept of ambiguous loss, the importance of validating emotions, the caregiver grieving process, and the importance of providing caregiver resources. To measure the change in knowledge, researchers utilized primarily a quantitative research design using pre- and post-test questionnaires with Likert- scale questions. The questionnaire …

COVID-19 negatively impacted students' abilities to participate in live, in-person events; students were unable to interact with peers or build relationships critical to success and well-being. Quarantine, social distancing and video conferencing did not create this problem however, it simply amplified the fact that dental students seemingly lack camaraderie and a sense of belongingness. The Curriculum and Cultural Ambassador group was created to allow students to bond over shared goals in the hopes of improving their experiences within dental school. This group gives students the ability to “Be the Change” on campus and enact real-time change to foster a sense …
