Background: Diamond Blackfan anemia (DBA) is an inherited bone marrow failure syndrome caused by ribosomal protein gene mutations leading to apoptosis of erythroid progenitors. We identified a novel heterozygous variant (c.167+769C>T) in the noncoding region of RPL30 in a patient diagnosed with DBA.
Objectives/Goal: We hypothesized that this variant stunts erythroid differentiation at the proerythroblast stage and is pathogenic for DBA.
Methods/Design: We developed an induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) model with a wild type (WT) and three CRISPR-Cas9 edited RPL30 mutant clones. iPSCs were differentiated into hematopoietic stem cells, which were assessed by flow cytometry and single cell …

Standard delivery protocols for most prenatally diagnosed CCHD is induction of labor at 39 weeks with aims of a vaginal delivery (VD) near a tertiary care center. There is no benefit to planned Cesarean delivery (CD) over VD for most infants with CCHD. However, longer durations of labor (DOL) in CCHD have been described as a risk factor for umbilical artery (UA) acidosis. We aim to describe the relationship between DOL and UA pH and neonatal outcomes in those with prenatally diagnosed CCHD.
Retrospective chart review of prenatally diagnosed with CCHD born at Children’s Mercy from 2012 – 2023. Inclusion …

Pcsk-9 Inhibitors Treatment: The Cardiovascular Disparity, Julia Lees, Seana-Pierre Williams, Tahir Razzaq, Michael B. Roberts
The Journal of Integrated Primary Care
Introduction: According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and American Heart Association (AHA), cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. This phenomenon disproportionally affects the African American population, who have a 31% higher mortality rate than non-Hispanic Caucasian individuals. A retrospective review of PCSK-9 medication use, specifically in a patient population that had minimal representation in the large, landmark clinical trials, can lead to better understanding about the therapeutic potential in cardiovascular disease reduction and patient outcomes attributed to medication use. Education regarding this novel drug class, medication access and patient support, …

Low-Dose Bevacizumab Treatment For Retinopathy Of Prematurity, Makayla Ayres, Katherine Brown Md
Research Days
Background: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is an eye disease that affects very premature infants and causes blindness. Treatment for ROP consists of anti-VEGF intravitreal injections (e.g., bevacizumab), laser therapy, and cryotherapy. The concern of anti-VEGF intravitreal injections is systemic toxicity and potential detrimental effects on these developing infants. In research trials, doses as low as 0.031 mg of bevacizumab have been shown to be effective in treating ROP. However, in clinical practice, the most common doses used are 0.125-0.25 mg.
Objectives/Goal: At CMKC, 0.075 mg doses of bevacizumab have been used to treat Type 1 ROP since 2022. We aim …

Evaluation Of The Usage And Effectiveness Of The Gross Anatomy Osteology E-Learning Module, Conor Young
Evaluation Of The Usage And Effectiveness Of The Gross Anatomy Osteology E-Learning Module, Conor Young
Theses & Dissertations
Supplementary online learning modalities have reached near ubiquity in graduate health sciences education, yet evidence about their effectiveness remains mixed. The Department of Genetics, Cell Biology, and Anatomy at UNMC recently introduced their own bespoke electronic study platform called the Osteology e-Learning Module to aid gross anatomy students in the study of osteology. To assess its effectiveness, osteology and whole gross lab practical exam scores were compared in four different content units across three school year cohorts of graduate students in the same gross anatomy class. A survey was also distributed to one cohort to capture subjective information about the …

Targeting Student Outcomes Through Implementation Of Laboratory Experiences In A First Year Medical Neuroanatomy Course, Grant Boxey
Anatomical Education Dissertations
The pillars of anatomical sciences, including neuroanatomy, have undergone massive shifts in their teaching methodologies in recent years. With the increased enrollment in graduate medical education, as well as the introduction of new technologies, the anatomical sciences have reformed the ways in which future healthcare practitioners learn. Among the challenges to neuroanatomical education have been reliable access to donor specimens, and a decrease in laboratory-based hours. This study evaluated the introduction of voluntary laboratory-based experiences within a first-year medical neuroanatomy course. The first research question evaluated the effect of hands-on laboratory experiences on examination performance between participants and non-participants. There …

A Case Of A Massive Right Atrial Thrombus Removal Under Transesophageal Echocardiographic Guidance, Justin Phillips, Max Kabolowsky, Alex M. Hendon, Samantha Arzillo
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
Background
With the advent of catheter guided interventions, practitioners have added another tool alongside chemical lysis and surgical removal to reduce the clot burden of patients with large emboli and thrombi. Due to comorbid conditions, many patients are poor candidates for surgical or chemical clot treatment but may present optimally for catheter-based thromboembolectomy. In this case, we highlight the benefits of mechanical thrombectomy with transesophageal echocardiographic guidance to reduce the clot burden of a patient who would otherwise be considered a poor candidate for surgical or chemical treatment.

Training surgeons poses many unique challenges. In addition to the clinical acumen that must be learned, a minimum threshold of technical competency is a requisite for independent practice. The trends of endovascular interventions and open surgical procedures add another layer of complexity to vascular surgery training. Simulation can provide a solution for both technical skills training and evaluating proficiency. The Education Committee of the Association of Program Directors of Vascular Surgery (APDVS) developed the Fundamentals of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery platform to provide an opportunity for more uniform basic technical skill teaching and assessment across all vascular training programs. Evaluation …

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research
Recent advances in small-joint arthroscopy and cutting-edge magnetic resonance imaging systems have enabled orthopedic surgeons to perform more complex repairs of the wrist. Such repairs can include those of the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) of the wrist that necessitates a reappraisal of its morphometry with special emphasis on the relationship between its articular disc (AD) and surrounding tissues. The TFCC AD is a fibrocartilaginous, biconcave structure located between the ulnar styloid process and the carpal bones of the wrist. We carefully dissected and measured the ADs of 58 wrists from 34 embalmed cadavers (20 females, 14 males) and fabricated three-dimensional …

Medical education is in the process of a pedagogical revolution. Traditional lectures are playing a progressively smaller role, with more of the content being delivered through student-centered small-group sessions. Problem-based learning (PBL) has become a centerpiece of education for many medical schools, in large part because of its focus on the learners identifying their own knowledge gaps. As junior scientists seek faculty appointments in institutions focused on healthcare education, they will find that skills in PBL are valued by the academic community. Among the necessary skills is the capability to lead efforts in PBL case writing. The cases, each of …

Optimizing Interventions For Major Depressive Disorder And Provider Burnout: Self-Speak Exercise Dosing (Sed), Laureen Maloney-Gepfert
Lynchburg Journal of Medical Science
ABSTRACT
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is ranked highest among mental illnesses in the United States (US) and significantly contributes to the mental health care crisis. Patients experience resistance to pharmacologic interventions, side effects, co-morbidities, and mental health provider shortages. Subsequently, 33 % of Serious Mental Illnesses (SMIs) are being redirected to Primary Care Providers (PCPs). Concurrently, prescriber mental health is in crisis. Growing workloads for physicians and Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) have increased provider burnout syndrome (BOS). Major Depressive Disorder and BOS are positively affected by exercise, Cognitive Restructuring (CR), and Behavioral Activation (BA). Sports medicine and psychology research shows …
