Exploring Large Language Models For Summarizing And Interpreting An Online Brain Tumor Support Forum, Christy Muasher-Kerwin, M. Courtney Hughes, Michelle L. Foster, Ibrahiim Al Azher, Hamed Alhoori

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Objective

This study explored the capabilities of large language models (LLMs) GPT-3.5, GPT-4, and Llama 3 to summarize qualitative data from an online brain tumor support forum, assessing the differences between these methods and traditional thematic analysis.

Methods

Eight posts and responses were collected in September 2024 from the American Brain Tumor Association Brain Tumor Support Group, using the passive/unobtrusive method. The data were analyzed using two methods: (1) traditional thematic coding with Dedoose software and (2) summarization and interpretation using LLMs. Prompts guided the LLMs in generating summaries and identifying key challenges, with results evaluated using the metrics BLEU, …

The Detection Of Multiple Human Papillomavirus (Hpv) Types Through The Development Of An Isothermal Dna Amplification Assay, Lauren Powell Jan 2025

The Detection Of Multiple Human Papillomavirus (Hpv) Types Through The Development Of An Isothermal Dna Amplification Assay, Lauren Powell

Doctoral

Human Papillomaviruses (HPV) belong to the Papillomaviridae family, with over 200 known types classified into high-risk (HR-HPV) and low-risk (LR-HPV) groups based on their carcinogenic potential. While most HPV infections are asymptomatic and transient, persistent infection can lead to health issues, including cervical cancer. Given the high prevalence of HPV and its potential for malignant transformation, nucleic acid amplification assays have become a widely implemented tool for routine HPV testing. This study developed a real-time isothermal DNA amplification assay for the detection and differentiation of multiple HPV types. A universal primer set was designed to target a highly conserved region …

Modeling Ion-Specific Effects In Polyelectrolyte Brushes: A Modified Poisson-Nernst-Planck Model, William J. Ceely, Marina Chugunova, Ali Nadim, James D. Sterling Jan 2025

Modeling Ion-Specific Effects In Polyelectrolyte Brushes: A Modified Poisson-Nernst-Planck Model, William J. Ceely, Marina Chugunova, Ali Nadim, James D. Sterling

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

Polyelectrolyte brushes consist of a set of charged linear macromolecules, each tethered at one end to a surface. An example is the glycocalyx which refers to hair-like negatively charged sugar molecules that coat the outside membrane of all cells. We consider the transport and equilibrium distribution of ions and the resulting electrical potential when such a brush is immersed in a salt buffer containing monovalent cations (sodium and/or potassium). The Gouy-Chapman model for ion screening at a charged surface captures the effects of the Coulombic force that drives ion electrophoresis and diffusion but neglects non-Coulombic forces and ion pairing. Electronic Health Records In Non-Hospital Settings Of Developing Economies: A Systematic Review On Enablers And Barriers, Bejie Rodriguez, Joenelyn Kaye Demoral, Jan Jacob Carpio, Alan Napoleon Gultia, Gloria Shiela Coyoca, Cecilio Garciano, Lemuel Clark Velasco

Institute of Philippine Culture (IPC)

In recent years, rapid advancements in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) have greatly transformed the healthcare landscape by streamlining health data management and providing decision-makers with secure and convenient access to health records. In developing economies, limited resources hinder healthcare access. Implementing EHRs in non-hospital settings is essential for enhancing healthcare quality and accessibility. While existing literature supports EHR use, further research is needed to pinpoint specific barriers and enablers. Using PRISMA guidelines, 18 relevant articles were systematically analyzed with the Human, Organization, and Technology Fit (HOT-fit) framework to examine these factors in non-hospital settings within developing economies. This study …

Leveraging Physiological Signal Activity And Self-Report Data To Assess Students’ Trust In “My Friendly Mind” App And Its Impact On Their Mental Health Knowledge: A Mixed-Method Phase 1 Clinical Trial Focusing On Depression And Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder From Human Factors Standpoint., Yeganeh Shahsavar

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Mental health issues have become a significant global public health concern, especially among younger generations. The growing number of mental health challenges, combined with limited access to quality care, makes the problem even worse. Studies reveal that over 70% of individuals worldwide in need of mental health services do not receive appropriate care. Digital health technologies have the potential to enhance mental health services by making them more accessible and affordable. Despite the increasing popularity of mental health mobile applications (mHealth), there remains a lack of robust evidence of their effectiveness and the level of user trust, particularly in areas …

Improving Telehealth Education And Training: A Needs Assessment Of Healthcare Providers And Trainees, Conor Duffy

Theses and Dissertations

Telehealth utilization has increased dramatically since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. There are many positive impacts of this shift to telehealth, including increasing access to care and reducing patient burden. However, healthcare providers report several consistent challenges that limit their ability to deliver telehealth, such as effective communication, technological difficulties, and difficulty performing physical examinations. To address these concerns, it is necessary to integrate telehealth education and training into healthcare professional training programs and healthcare systems. While many institutions have implemented telehealth education and training since the start of the pandemic, there is little consistency in the content, duration, …

Use Of Augmented Reality For Mosquito Breeding Sites Identification, Venant Niyonkuru, Sylla Sekou, Jimmy J. Sinzinkayo

Digital Journal of Clinical Medicine

An augmented reality app is used for detecting the possible breeding locations of mosquitoes in different settings precisely. With the aid of the advanced augmented vision technology, the AR system recognizes water-containing containers that are frequent breeding places for mosquitoes according to the visual information obtained through a head-mounted display. It then overlays visual highlights and labels directly onto these containers within the user's field of view, allowing one to instantly identify and spot breeding sites in real time. By combining state-of-the-art AR functionality with powerful computer vision algorithms, the method provides real-time visual feedback for identifying and tagging mosquito …
