LEP or Limited English Proficiency patients across the United States are at higher risk for decreased quality of care because of their inability to communicate effectively with healthcare providers. Interpreters are not offered in a consistent manner due to many variables such as cost, availability of qualified interpreters, the time spent with patients due to an increased work-overload and clinician lack of knowledge into technologies available to use. Healthcare information technology such as video and telephone interpretation can bridge the gap between patients and medical personnel when a language barrier is present. In today’s healthcare, intravenous (IV) therapy-related errors have become rampant and are responsible for a substantial portion of hospital injuries and deaths. In the last decade, however, since the development and implementation of “smart” IV pumps, a significant number of these IV medication errors have allegedly been reduced. The purpose of this paper is to discuss research surrounding an evaluation of the efficacy of smart IV pumps from a nursing perspective.

The rapid introduction of technology into acute healthcare settings, specifically the presence of point-of-care health information technology at patients’ bedsides, is expected to impact patients’ healthcare experience by altering nurse-patient interactions. This research was a multi-method naturalistic pilot study designed to explore patients’ perception of their interactions with nurses using bedside point-of-care health information technology in acute care. Data were collected using observation, interviews and surveys. Twenty-four participants were purposefully recruited from medical and surgical wards, to capture variability in their self-reported confidence with information technology; 29% were not confident, 38% were somewhat confident and 33% were completely confident with …

Now that EHRs are purportedly fully implemented in the healthcare industry, it is important to evaluate the electronic Health Information Exchange (HIE) between primary care facilities, laboratories, hospitals, specialists, regional coops, and public health authorities.

Meaningful Use Stage 3 implementation is to begin this year, 2018. Complementing this implementation, the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act, MACRA, was signed into law on April 16, 2015. MACRA removes eligible clinicians from EHR Incentive Programs that were previously established by the HITECH Act. Ransomware is a type of malware used by cyber criminals who encrypt files and then extort money in return for unlocking those files. Without adequate disaster recovery and backup plans, many businesses are forced to pay the ransom. We examine recent ransomware infections in healthcare settings, the liabilities and cost associated with such infections, and discuss possible risk mitigation tactics. Risks associated with ransomware attacks on healthcare facilities include financial, future business loss and damage to reputation. Healthcare facilities should have a disaster plan with adequate data backups and educate employees who are the usual sources of ransomware attacks.

This in progress study reviews challenges and successes associated with implementing a 340B program at Marshall Health and Cabell Huntington Hospital (CHH) in Huntington, West Virginia. CHH qualified as a participant in the 340B program because it has met qualification as a disproportionate share hospital (DSH). The site has also been able to open two outpatient pharmacies to serve the targeted patient population. The pharmacies have also been able to use savings from the program to embed clinical pharmacists into the physician care areas to provide medication therapy management services including discharge counselling, disease state management services, patient financial assistance …

If the electronic medical record patient portal use is less than 25%, primary care providers face reductions in value-based reimbursements. National adoption rates from portal use remain under 27% with some providers averaging well below the needed 25%. The aim of this study is to examine the impact of a cloud-based CDS alerting system for SIRS, a precursor to sepsis, and sepsis itself, on adult patient and process outcomes at VCU Health System. The two main hypotheses are: 1) the implementation of cloud-based SIRS and sepsis alerts will lead to lower sepsis-related mortality and lower average length of stay, and 2) the implementation of cloud-based SIRS and sepsis alerts will lead to more frequent ordering of the Sepsis PowerPlan and more recording of sepsis diagnoses.
