Introduction: Kaposi Sarcoma (KS) is a soft tissue sarcoma that affects the linings of blood and lymphatic vessels. It occurs, primarily in immunocompromised individuals. It is caused by the Human Herpesvirus 8. There are four recognized forms of KS: AIDS-related, iatrogenic, classic, and endemic. Each form varies in demographics and manifestation. AIDS-related KS occurs in HIV-positive individuals, while iatrogenic KS develops in transplant patients undergoing immunosuppressive therapy. Classic KS is typically seen in elderly males from specific geographic regions, and endemic KS affects young individuals in certain areas of Africa. Transverse myelitis (TM) is a rare inflammatory syndrome of the spinal cord that is often attributed to immune-mediated responses which lead to demyelination and the resultant varying degrees of motor, sensory, and autonomic dysfunction. While COVID-19 virus itself is known to present with anosmia, ageusia and Guillian Barre syndrome, a few rare cases of COVID-virus related TM have been reported. This case presents a 61-year-old female experiencing bilateral lower extremity weakness with brisk to absent reflexes. Vaccines are a vital tool in preventing diseases, but their effectiveness varies depending on factors like diet and body weight. Obese individuals often experience reduced vaccine protection, as seen with influenza vaccines, where they have twice the risk of getting the flu compared to healthy-weight individuals after vaccination. This study aims to understand why obesity weakens vaccine effectiveness, focusing on the role of blood-forming stem cells in the bone marrow, known as hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs). Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) directly attacks the host immune system by infecting and replicating in CD4-presenting immune cells. Like most viral pathogens, HIV utilizes cellular machinery to assist in viral entry, transport, and export. One of the components HIV is known to utilize for replication is the actin cytoskeleton. By directly binding to actin or actin-binding proteins, HIV can manipulate structural dynamics within the cell. The development of new drugs targeting HIV-1 replication steps is essential for keeping viral loads low or undetectable to prevent further transmission. Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic relapsing condition characterized by irritation, redness, inflammation, and itching of the skin. The cause of AD is theorized to be multifactorial, including genetic components, such as mutations in filaggrin, environmental exposures, and immune predisposition. AD often presents in childhood and adolescence, but can appear at any age. AD eruptions arise through various triggers, which commonly include soaps, detergents, fabrics, and cold or hot weather. Mumps is an infectious disease caused by a viral infection, often attacking the salivary glands, especially the parotid glands. This disease is self-limiting and common in elementary school children. This study aims to describe the prevalence, symptoms, and impact of mumps in students of SD Negeri 010 Makroman, Samarinda, as well as evaluate risk factors and relevant prevention efforts. With a descriptive research design, data was obtained from a population of 307 students through secondary data from the Makroman Health Center and direct on-site investigations. Zika virus (ZIKV) is a mosquito-borne human pathogen that causes mild febrile illness in adults and severe neurological complications and microcephaly in newborns. Studies have reported that ZIKV modulates methylation of human and viral RNA critical for its replication in vertebrate cells. In this study, we show that ZIKV modulates mosquito S-adenosyl methionine (SAMe)-synthase, an enzyme involved in the production of SAMe (methyl donor), and histone methylation for its survival in mosquito cells. Reverse transcription quantitative PCR followed by immunoblotting analysis showed increased amounts of SAMe synthase at both RNA and protein levels, respectively, in C6/36 mosquito cells infected with …

The seasonal influenza virus causes a common respiratory illness that can be life threatening to the immunocompromised, the very young, and the elderly. The current strategies for avoiding a serious influenza virus infection are good hygiene practices and the annual influenza vaccine. Unfortunately, last year’s influenza virus vaccine effectiveness ranged between 32-60% for children and adolescents and 46-54% for adults. These low efficacy rates are due to the vaccine often targeting hemagglutinin, a highly variable surface protein. Background: People living with diagnosed HIV (PLWDH) have a higher chance of co-infections and co-morbidities than the general population. When SARS-CoV-2 was first reported in China in December 2019 and later declared a pandemic, it was speculated that PLWDH might be more prone to SARS-CoV-2 infection and severe disease outcomes given their increased vulnerability to other respiratory infections like influenza, pneumococcal pneumonia and tuberculosis. However, several facets of COVID-19 disease in PLWDH are incompletely understood, including whether non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are strong risk factors for severe disease outcomes and death as they are in the general population.
