Background Periodontitis is a severe gum disease that can be an indicator of other health conditions such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Lycopene has been suggested as an adjunct therapy for periodontitis. This study aims to investigate the association between insufficient lycopene intake and the risk of Periodontitis among non-Hispanic White (NHW) and non-Hispanic Black (NHB) older adults. Methods The study included 1,227 adults aged 65–79 years from the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (2009–2014). Total lycopene intake from daily diet was studied with age, race, marital status, smoking status, BMI, diabetes, sex, and education as independent variables in …
Conservative Vs Invasive Interventions For Temporomandibular Disorders–An Executive Summary Of The Clinical Practice Guideline, Gary D. Klasser, Charles S. Greene
Conservative Vs Invasive Interventions For Temporomandibular Disorders–An Executive Summary Of The Clinical Practice Guideline, Gary D. Klasser, Charles S. Greene
School of Dentistry Faculty Publications
This guideline is based on the International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (IADR) list of keypoints for the diagnosis and management of TMDs. Clinical Question: Are conservative reversible therapies more effective for TMDs as compared to invasive and irreversible interventions?
Self-Medication Behavior Of Dental Students With Oral Ulceration Lesions: A Cross-Sectional Study In Yogyakarta, Indonesia, Fita Fathaya Iriana, Hendri Susanto, Rosa Amalia
Self-Medication Behavior Of Dental Students With Oral Ulceration Lesions: A Cross-Sectional Study In Yogyakarta, Indonesia, Fita Fathaya Iriana, Hendri Susanto, Rosa Amalia
Journal of Dentistry Indonesia
Objective: Self-medication refers to medication behavior for self-diagnosed symptoms. Oral ulcers are self-medicated lesions in the oral cavity. Dental students have different knowledge about oral cavity lesions and may self-medicate using drugs. This study aimed to determine the self-medication behavior of dental students for oral ulcers. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on dental students in the Faculty of Dentistry from different batch years. Purposive sampling was used to select students with oral ulcer lesions in the last six months. A validated and reliable questionnaire was used to assess self-medication behavior. Data collection using the online form. Student behavior …
Evaluation Of The Adjunctive Effect Of Photodynamic Therapy For The Treatment Of Residual Periodontal Pockets: A Systematic Review, Shankargouda Patil, Charles Miller, Ryan Moffat, Kade Janes, Brooklyn Janes, Peter M. Loomer, Frank W. Licari
Evaluation Of The Adjunctive Effect Of Photodynamic Therapy For The Treatment Of Residual Periodontal Pockets: A Systematic Review, Shankargouda Patil, Charles Miller, Ryan Moffat, Kade Janes, Brooklyn Janes, Peter M. Loomer, Frank W. Licari
Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews
Purpose: Adjunctive use of photodynamic therapy in combination with scaling and root planing for periodontal maintenance offers an alternative to antibiotic therapy, potentially mitigating the risk of antibiotic resistance and its genotoxic or mutagenic effects. This systematic review analyzed studies, as of January 2023, that included the effects of a single application of photodynamic therapy in residual periodontal pockets with the probing depth and clinical attachment level as the primary and secondary outcomes, respectively.
Methods: PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases, as well as the US National Institutes of Health and WHO Clinical Trials Registry, were searched for eligible …

Auriculotemporal Nerve Block For Tmj: A Systematic Review, Hasan Zia, Usmaan Al-Shehab, Ahmed Gawash, Anthony Dipalma, Dale Johnson, Musa Dolley, David F. Lo, Ryan St. John, Zain Hassam, Don D. Shamilov
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
The purpose of this systematic review is to evaluate auriculotemporal nerve blocks for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder management. 583 articles reviewed from five databases, selected four studies for pooled analysis on visual analog scale (VAS) and maximum mouth opening (MMO) outcomes. Pooled analysis showed significant improvement in VAS (-2.27, p < 0.001) and MMO (0.94, p = 0.03) post-auriculotemporal nerve blocks for TMJ disorder. Auriculotemporal nerve blocks demonstrate potential effectiveness in TMJ disorder treatment, warranting further research on long-term effects and side effects.

Prevalence And Clinical Characteristics Of Temporomandibular Disorders In Adults: An Epidemiological Study In The Mediterranean Region Of Türkiye, Esra Yavuz, Selmi Yardimci, Humeyra Tercanli
Journal of Dentistry Indonesia
The prevalence and clinical characteristics of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in the Mediterranean region of Türkiye have not yet been thoroughly investigated. Objective: This study aimed to determine the prevalence and severity of TMD in a sample of the population in this region and to characterize the clinical findings related to TMD. Methods: Four hundred and one participants were included in this study. “Presence of TMD” in the participants was evaluated using the Fonseca Anamnestic Index. Through clinical examination, the findings in the participants were classified as limited mouth opening, deviation, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) sounds, TMJ pain, and muscle …

Burning Mouth Disorder And Parkinson's Disease: A Scoping Review Of The Literature, O. Guru, Ramesh Balasubramaniam, Gary D. Klasser
School of Dentistry Faculty Publications
Background: Burning mouth disorder (BMD) is a complex medical condition characterized by a burning sensation in the mouth of fluctuating intensity. BMD is considered a diagnosis of exclusion, as oral burning can occur secondary to local or systemic conditions. Parkinson's disease (PD) is one such condition. Objective: To provide a scoping review of the literature by assessing all articles written in English that investigated the relationship between BMD and PD. Materials and Methods: Various databases (PubMed, Ovid, Web of Science, Science Direct and Scopus) and a search platform (EBSCOhost) were searched following similar investigative approaches. Duplicates were removed and reference …

Background: The impact of poor oral health on older adults' quality of life is a public health problem. In this study, the mediating effects of dental status, occlusal condition, dysphagia, and masticatory performance on the association between xerostomia and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) were assessed in the older adult population. Methods: Stratified cluster sampling was used to recruit 1076 community-dwelling adults aged 65 years and older from Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Community care centers were randomly selected according to their geographic classifications (urban, rural, or mountainous areas). Assessments of dental status and occlusal condition were performed by dentists. Information on demographics, …

The Role Of Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor (Ahr) Signaling Pathway In Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (Oscc): Preliminary Results., Renee Lee, Cui Xu, Leticia Ferreira, Ana Carolina Morandini, Erivan Ramos-Junior
Excellence Day
OBJECTIVES: A large number of experimental and clinical studies suggest that the origin of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is linked to environmental carcinogenesis (tobacco, alcohol). Among these environmental factors, cigarette smoking is the most studied and has been associated with increased susceptibility to OSCC by activating signaling pathways responsible for cancer initiation and progression. Besides nicotine, cigarette smoke also contains aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) agonists, such as dioxin and benzo(a)pyrene. Aberrant AhR expression and AhR pathway activation are involved in several types of cancer. However, the relationship between AhR pathway activation and oral cancer progression is still unclear.
