Characterization Of Regulation Of Ace2 And Morphogenesis (Ram) Pathway Components In Aspergillus Fumigatus, Devi Naga Jyothi Bale Dec 2026

Characterization Of Regulation Of Ace2 And Morphogenesis (Ram) Pathway Components In Aspergillus Fumigatus, Devi Naga Jyothi Bale

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Aspergillus fumigatus CotA is a conserved protein kinase and predicted orthologue of Cbk1, a terminal kinase of the Regulation of Ace2 and Morphogenesis (RAM) network. In our previous study, disruption of CotA resulted in carbon source dependent invasive growth with the mutant exhibiting preferential growth on glucose but severely impaired growth on alternate carbon sources. This pathway in other fungi has been implicated in the regulation of morphogenesis, stress responses, and virulence, but this study is the first one to characterize it in the pathogenic filamentous fungus.  In yeast, the RAM network includes the CotA ortholog, Cbk1, and associated proteins, …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Purpose/Background

Pediatric asthma is rising globally, currently affecting over 300 million individuals and projected to reach 400 million by 2025. This scoping review aims to summarize existing evidence on the impact of providing smoking education to caregivers during hospitalization on reducing pediatric asthma exacerbations, with the goal of encouraging further research.

Methods

The search spanned from August 2022 to November 2024, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Inclusion criteria focused on studies involving human participants and caregivers of children receiving smoking cessation education in relation to asthma exacerbation and hospital admission. Databases searched included …

Improving Health Outcomes In Children And Adolescents With Asthma, Elizabeth Kate Coffey Moore Jan 2024

Improving Health Outcomes In Children And Adolescents With Asthma, Elizabeth Kate Coffey Moore

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Asthma is among the most prevalent chronic illnesses found in the United States, affecting millions of people under the age of 18 each year. The disease burden for affected children, adolescents, their families, and the healthcare system is immense. Finding ways to mitigate its impact is critical to improving the lives of affected children, adolescents, and their families. The three chapters included in this dissertation aimed to document the asthma triggers that children and adolescents are exposed to and strategies for reducing them and to demonstrate using Imogene King’s conceptual framework to guide nursing practice to care for and nursing …

Physiologically-Based Pharmacokinetic (Pbpk) Modeling For The Preclinical Development Of Spectinamide Antibiotics, Keyur R. Parmar Jan 2023

Physiologically-Based Pharmacokinetic (Pbpk) Modeling For The Preclinical Development Of Spectinamide Antibiotics, Keyur R. Parmar

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Despite being an ancient disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) and after decades of research, tuberculosis (TB) still affects millions of people every year worldwide. In 2018, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that 10 million people developed tuberculosis and 1.5 million died of the disease. With the increase in the multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) cases, the treatment for TB with the standard first and second-line therapy is becoming increasingly difficult. Therefore, there is an urgent need to find new anti-TB drugs as combination partners of existing and experimental classes of antimicrobial agents to shorten and simplify the …

Impact Of Spontaneous Breathing Trials On Reducing Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia In Adult Intubated Patients: A Scoping Review, Jireh R. Johnson Bsn, Rn, Hamzha Aysheh Bsn, Rn, Keianna Luckett Bsn, Rn, Margaret Harvey Phd, Aprn, Acnp-Bc, Chfn

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Purpose/Background For ventilated patients in the intensive care unit, ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a major source of morbidity. It is difficult to diagnose due to many of the diagnostic criteria being subjective, its clinical signs that are broad, and its association with various respiratory disorders. Hospitals have developed varying ventilator bundles in expectation to prevent the incidence of Ventilator-associate pneumonia. We performed scoping review to determine the impact of spontaneous breathing trials (SBT) on reducing VAP.

Methods From August to November of 2021, using the MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, and Scopus databases and MeSH search terms, we identified over 20,000 articles containing …

Advancing Rna Virus Discovery And Biology With Whole Genome Sequencing, Mariah Katherine Taylor Nov 2021

Advancing Rna Virus Discovery And Biology With Whole Genome Sequencing, Mariah Katherine Taylor

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Two RNA virus families that pose a threat to human and animal health are Hantaviridae and Coronaviridae. These RNA viruses which originate in wildlife continue and will continue to cause disease, and hence, it is critical that scientific research define the mechanisms as to how these viruses spillover and adapt to new hosts to become endemic. One gap in our ability to define these mechanisms is the lack of whole genome sequences for many of these viruses. To address this specific gap, I developed a versatile amplicon-based whole-genome sequencing (WGS) approach to identify viral genomes of hantaviruses and severe acute …

Us Guided Management Of Undifferentiated Dyspneic Patient In The Ed, Kaleigh Miller Mar 2020

Us Guided Management Of Undifferentiated Dyspneic Patient In The Ed, Kaleigh Miller

Longitudinal Scholar's Project

Intro: Undifferentiated dyspnea can be a complicated presentation muddled by patient comorbidities and similar symptomology shared among etiologies. Some studies have shown increased mortality and length of stay in the hospital when incorrectly initially diagnosed in the ED. US has been shown more effective at differentiating these causes and improves diagnostic accuracy. This study will implement US exam upon initial exam of patient and chart time to diagnosis/treatment, length of stay in ED, length of stay in hospital admissions versus discharge rates, and 30 day mortality. ADHF and COPD/asthma patient differentiation will be the focus.

Methods: Prospective cohort study of …

Toll-Like Receptors 2 And 9 Are Important For Innate Immune Cell Activation And Recruitment In Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis, Kelly J. Andrews Dec 2013

Toll-Like Receptors 2 And 9 Are Important For Innate Immune Cell Activation And Recruitment In Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis, Kelly J. Andrews

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) is an interstitial lung disease caused by repeated inhalation of environmental antigens. The disease is characterized by alveolitis and granuloma formation; however, some patients develop chronic HP (CHP), a restrictive lung disease characterized by fibrosis. Previous studies revealed that neutrophils are recruited into the lung via a MyD88- dependent pathway and regulate disease severity through cytokine production. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) 2 and 9 recognize conserved molecular patterns present in bacteria, and signal through the adaptor molecule MyD88. The goal of my project is to investigate the role of TLRs 2 and 9 in the pathogenesis of HP …
