Empty Nose Syndrome—What Do We Know?, Ethan Frank, Christopher Church Md Jan 2017

Empty Nose Syndrome—What Do We Know?, Ethan Frank, Christopher Church Md

Loma Linda University Student Journal

Empty nose syndrome is a complication of nasal surgery wherein patients develop a persistent, debilitating sense of nasal obstruction and dyspnea despite clear nasal cavities. It is characterized by a discrepancy between prominent subjective symptoms and near total lack of objective findings, making it difficult to diagnose. The pathophysiology of empty nose syndrome is a complex mix of aerodynamic, physiologic, and neurological changes leading to altered airflow and diminished sensory function. Evolving treatment options consist of medical symptom control or surgical reconstruction.

Breathlessness Descriptors In Patients With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Versus Congestive Heart Failure, Adelaide De Souza Caroci Dec 2001

Breathlessness Descriptors In Patients With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Versus Congestive Heart Failure, Adelaide De Souza Caroci

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This cross-sectional descriptive study investigated breathlessness (dyspnea) in stable patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Congestive Heart Failure (CHF). The purpose of this study was (a) to characterize the most common terms COPD and CHF patients use to describe their breathing, (b) to identify the frequency of dyspnea in patients with COPD and CHF, and (c) to determine the intensity of dyspnea in these populations.

A purposive sample of 60 patients, 30 with moderate to severe COPD and 30 patients with moderate to severe CHF, met the inclusion criteria and were enrolled in this study. The participants provided …

Sensory Stimulation To Promote Deep Breathing In The Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Patient, Sharon Kay Sauer Dec 1978

Sensory Stimulation To Promote Deep Breathing In The Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Patient, Sharon Kay Sauer

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Breathing retraining has been an integral part of respiratory rehabilitation for the patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (C.O.P.D.). Techniques used for breathing retraining have been studied for many years. These techniques include such breathing retraining modalities as relaxation conditioning, positioning maneuvers, abdominaldiaphragmatic breathing, pursed lip breathing and intermittent positive pressure breathing. Controversy concerning the therapeutic value of many of these techniques has developed. In this descriptive case study on three subjects with C.O.P.D. the experimental technique of sensory stimulation was investigated as a breaching retraining method. Sensory stimulation consisted of five minutes of repetitive brushing and two to three …

The Neuropsychiatric Factor In Allergic Disease, Norman Shure, M Coleman Harris Oct 1948

The Neuropsychiatric Factor In Allergic Disease, Norman Shure, M Coleman Harris

Medical Arts and Sciences: A Scientific Journal of the College of Medical Evangelists

A concept of the causation of allergic disease herewith is presented in which, in addition to the allergic factors, emotional states and psychic stimuli are introduced as integral parts of every case. The adoption of the terms "intrinsic" for the neuropsychiatric factors and "extrinsic" for the organic factors in the production of allergic disease is suggested.

Quantitative Sugar Estimations In Pleural Fluid - An Aid To Diagnosis, John E. Peterson Oct 1948

Quantitative Sugar Estimations In Pleural Fluid - An Aid To Diagnosis, John E. Peterson

Medical Arts and Sciences: A Scientific Journal of the College of Medical Evangelists

In a study of 33 cases of serous effusion it would appear that determination of the sugar content of the pleural fluid may provide an early clue to the etiologic diagnosis.
