The Effects Of Attending Prediabetes Prevention Workshops On Improving Students' Awareness, Knowledge, And Interest, Madelene Hamann
DNP Research Projects
Abstract
Objective:This DNP project evaluated the effectiveness of a five-week educational intervention on adolescents’ knowledge of prediabetes, awareness, and intentions to adopt healthy lifestyle behaviors. Method and Intervention:Youth aged 13 to 18 years participated in five 40-minute school-based workshops. Outcomes were measured using the Adolescent Diabetes Awareness Test (ADAT), Health Belief Model (HBM), and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) workshop evaluation. Effect sizes and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to determine clinical relevance. Results:The intervention had a large, clinically relevant effect on prediabetes knowledge and awareness measured by the ADAT (Hedges’ g = 1.10) …

Indonesia ranked third in Southeast Asia for Sugar-Sweetened Beverages (SSBs) consumption in 2022, with a consumption rate of 20.23 liters/person/year. According to Riskesdas in 2018, 61.3% of the Indonesian population consumed more than once a day and 47.5% in 2023. This study aims to understand the patterns and levels of SSB consumption among various factors in students of SMA Negeri 68 Jakarta in 2024. This cross-sectional study was conducted from April to May 2024 with 134 respondents using questionnaires and interviews for 24-hour food recall and SQ-FFQ. Univariate analysis showed that 12.69% of respondents had high SSB consumption. Bivariate analysis …

Vitamin D Deficiency Among Children And Adolescents Living In Sunny South Texas, Yoscelina E. Martinez-Lopez, Margarita Faz, Beatriz Tapia, Juan C. Lopez-Alvarenga, Francisco J. Cervantes
Research Symposium
Background: Exposure to sunlight is essential to produce Vitamin D (ViD). Recent studies suggest obesity is associated with low ViD concentration. Living in South Texas with 220 sunny days a year should be enough to maintain adequate ViD levels. We aimed to analyze ViD levels and obesity in children and adolescents.
Methods: We included 1239 pediatric (1.5 to 18.8 years old) participants (primary care clinic from Laredo) with registered CDC percentiles of BMI (pBMI) and serum concentrations of ViD (Atellica™). Data are described as median (p25, p75), Loess correlation between pBMI and ViD, ANCOVA to adjust by age, sex, and …

Diabetes mellitus, simply known as diabetes, is a metabolic disorder that impacts how the body makes use of glucose or blood sugar. Glucose is the primary supply of energy for the body’s cells, which is controlled by insulin, a pancreatic hormone. Diabetes results in high blood glucose levels (hyperglycemia), which are caused by either insufficient insulin production by the pancreas or ineffective insulin utilization by the body (Dean & McEntyre, 2004). Although there are several types of diabetes, the two main types are type 1 and type 2. Type 1, also known as juvenile diabetes, is an inflammatory condition in …

Indonesian Journal of Public Health Nutrition (IJPHN)
The increased risk of non-communicable diseases is still a problem in Indonesia, one of which is the lack of consumption of fruits and vegetables. The available data shows that although fruits and vegetables have a protective/protective effect on the incidence of non-communicable diseases but in real life, the average consumption of fruits and vegetables is still below the recommended intake. Thus, the protective effect cannot be seen clearly. This study aims to describe the consumption of fruits and vegetables and determine the factors of food parenting practices and other factors related to the consumption of fruits and vegetables in students …

Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) are drinks added with simple sugar, which can increase the energy because of calorie-dense and high in sugar, but low in other nutrients. Excessive consumption of SSBs can cause nutritional problems, such as increasing the risk of overweight and obesity. This study aims to determine the relationship between SSBs consumption and various factor and the dominant factor of SSBs consumption among students of SMAN (State High School) 47 Jakarta in 2022. The cross-sectional study was conducted from November 2021 to June 2022 with 120 respondents. Primary data was taken using questionnaires and analyzed by univariate, bivariate (chi-square …

Low learning concentration will have impact on low academic performance. This study aims to determine the relationship between learning concentration and several factors and to find the most dominant factor in the students of SMAN 1 Jember. In this study, learning concentration was the dependent variable, while breakfast habits, nutrient intake (energy, carbohydrates, protein, fat, iron, zinc, vitamin B12, vitamin C), sleep quality, and physical activity were independent variables. This research is a quantitative study with cross-sectional design. This study conducted in June 2021 at SMAN 1 Jember with a total of 200 respondents who were selected using the quota …

The health and nutrition of the global adolescent population have been under-researched, in spite of its significant size (1.2 billion). This study investigates the prevalence and associated factors of malnutrition (stunting, thinness and overweight) among adolescents living in South Asia. The sample analysed was 24,053 South Asian schooled adolescents aged 12-15 years that participated in the cross-sectional Global School-Based Student Health Survey (GSHS) between 2009 and 2016. The prevalence of stunting, thinness and overweight was calculated using the World Health Organization (WHO) Child Growth Reference 2007. Associations between the three forms of malnutrition and their possible associated factors were assessed …

Objectives: To our knowledge, this study is the first in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to investigate the prevalence of child maltreatment in relation to depressive symptoms and self-esteem.
Study design: Exposure to physical maltreatment, emotional abuse and neglect was evaluated in 518 adolescents (86% response rate) randomly selected from schools in Al Ain in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The Rosenberg self-esteem scale and the Beck Depression Inventory were used to measure self-esteem and depressive symptoms by using multivariate logistic regression analyses.

The Effects Of Wearable Fitness Devices On Pediatric Obesity: An Integrative Literature Review, Kevin Sabina
The Effects Of Wearable Fitness Devices On Pediatric Obesity: An Integrative Literature Review, Kevin Sabina
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Childhood obesity is a foremost concern throughout the health care community. Approximately 17.6% of the pediatric population meet the criteria for obesity, which can lead to health disparities later in life, such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and metabolic syndrome. Emerging mobile and wearable lifestyle tracking devices can be a viable solution to the challenging problem of childhood obesity through behavior changes, feasibility, and adherence. The purpose of this literature review was to determine the effect that mobile and wearable activity tracking devices have on the obese pediatric population. A centralized review of the literature was conducted using various …

Background: Excess weight (overweight and obesity) is the major modifiable risk factor for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and other non-communicable diseases. However, excess weight may not be as predictive of diabetes risk as once thought. While excess weight and other obesity-related non-communicable diseases are of growing concern in low-middle income countries in Latin America, there is limited research on risk factors associated with T2DM in adolescents. This study investigated prevalence of overweight, obesity, prediabetes, diabetes and metabolic syndrome in adolescents in Ecuador.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 433 adolescents from two schools in a small …
