A Blood-Based Test For Colorectal Cancer Screening, Joshua Cullison Dec 2025

A Blood-Based Test For Colorectal Cancer Screening, Joshua Cullison

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Within the United States (US), colorectal cancer (CRC) remains the fourth most common malignancy and is responsible for over 50 000 deaths annually, second only to lung cancer in cancer mortality. Despite increased public awareness and increasing screening rates, the US remains far below the 80% screening mark set by the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable at 59%. The addition of non-invasive blood-based tests for CRC screening could potentially increase screening rates and lower CRC deaths.

I performed a PubMed search using the search term “blood-based colorectal cancer screening.” I was particularly interested in articles that looked at Shield, which is …

Educational Point-Of-Care Ultrasound Discovers Adrenal Cortical Carcinoma, A Case Report: Clinical Implications And Review Of The Literature, Minh Q. Nguyen, Moshe Bengio, Vu H. Tran

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Introduction

Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has become an indispensable tool for emergency physicians in assessing intra-abdominal pathology due to its real-time visualization, portability, and cost-effectiveness. While POCUS is not traditionally focused on adrenal gland assessment, incidental findings of adrenal masses during examinations have been reported. Our patient presented with a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbation and was found to have a large adrenal mass, discovered incidentally, during thoracic ultrasound.

Case Presentation

This case report presents the discovery of an adrenal mass in a patient with respiratory distress due to a COPD exacerbation, emphasizing the importance of sonographers’ ability to identify …

Plasma Cell-Rich Lymphoid Neoplasm In An Endocervical Polyp Of The Uterine Cervix In A Perimenopausal 52-Year-Old Woman, Anjali Patel, Jacqueline Haas, Angela Kueck Feb 2025

Plasma Cell-Rich Lymphoid Neoplasm In An Endocervical Polyp Of The Uterine Cervix In A Perimenopausal 52-Year-Old Woman, Anjali Patel, Jacqueline Haas, Angela Kueck

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Background

The adaptive immune system consists of T and B lymphocytes, with some B lymphocytes further differentiating into plasma cells that secrete antibodies and make up the humoral immune system. Extramedullary plasmacytoma, mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma, and plasmablastic lymphoma are all plasma cell-rich lymphoid neoplasms that rarely present in the female genital tract. To date, few case reports of these malignancies arising within the uterine cervix exist.

Case Presentation

This case report describes a 52-year-old perimenopausal woman who presented to her primary obstetrician-gynecologist for an annual exam with the complaint of light spotting following an endometrial ablation that occurred …

Hearts Hidden Message: Right Ventricular Thrombus Reveals Esophageal Adenocarcinoma, Devika Adusumilli, Seline Haci, Jafri Imran, Arman Vaghefi, Mehdi Khalafi, Ikponmwosa Iyamu, Sarvanan Balamuthusamy

North Texas Research Forum 2025

Introduction Right ventricular thrombi are uncommon, usually found with concurrent pulmonary emboli and associated with significant mortality. They often originate from deep vein thrombi but may also be due to primary intracardiac processes . A right ventricular thrombus can be an unexpected marker for underlying malignancies, including esophageal cancer. This occurs due to the hypercoagulable state often induced by malignancy. Here we report a presentation where the identification of a right ventricular thrombus led to the diagnosis of esophageal cancer. Case Presentation Our patient is a 57-year old male with no past medical history who experienced an episode of dizziness …

Mycosis Fungoides: A Mimicker Of Atopic Dermatitis, Christian Scheufele, Paige Loux, Henry Lim, Garrett Furth, Marshall Hall, Michael Carletti, Stephen Weis

North Texas Research Forum 2025

Introduction Cutaneous T cell lymphoma (CTCL) is a rare, cutaneous, malignant neoplasm of the resident T cell lymphocytes within the skin. CTCL encompasses a spectrum of morphologically and prognostically distinct entities, the most common of which is mycosis fungoides (MF). The incidence of mycosis fungoides is about 6 cases per million per year in the United States and Europe. MF is notoriously difficult to diagnose clinically. It can masquerade as several common dermatologic conditions and may be treated as such for years until a biopsy reveals the correct diagnosis. One of the most common diseases that MF mimics is atopic …
