Objectives:

Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are common in adult males with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) being a common cause, with significant effect on the patient’s quality of life and sexual function. Studies show that sexual dysfunction increases with increasing severity of LUTS. INTRODUCTION: Despite the diagnostic value of intracavernosal injections (ICI) and penile Doppler ultrasound (PDUS), there remain barriers to widespread clinical adaptation of these methods. The study aimed to evaluate the practice patterns of utilization of ICI and PDUS in the assessment of erectile dysfunction (ED) and Peyronie's disease (PD).

METHODS: Using the TriNetX database (Cambridge, MA, USA), adult (≥18 years) male patients with a diagnosis of ED on oral phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitors were identified. There are well established links between male sexual health conditions and chronic disease, particularly cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Erectile dysfunction (ED) and low testosterone are two sexual health conditions that are relatively common among the wider male population. However, there is a lack of data specifically about these sexual problems among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander males.

STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review of three English language randomized controlled trials published between 2011-2013.

DATA SOURCES: Three randomized controlled trials published in peer-reviewed journals comparing the effects of statins on erectile function found using the PubMed database.
