This study examines the environmental factors contributing to adverse maternal health outcomes in New Jersey, with particular focus on their disproportionate impact on minority women. Analysis of data from PubMed, Policy Map, NIH, CDC, EPA, and the New Jersey Department of Health reveals that women living in low-income areas face significant environmental challenges, including food deserts, air pollution, unsafe living conditions, inadequate infrastructure, and limited transportation options. These environmental determinants exacerbate maternal stress and contribute to complications such as preterm birth and hypertension. Clostridium, a genus of anaerobic, spore-forming bacteria, includes clinically and ecologically significant species like Clostridium difficile and Paeniclostridium sordellii. C. difficile causes antibiotic-associated colitis, while P. sordellii is linked to fatal infections and spontaneous abortions. Recent studies found both species in marine sediments, suggesting their role in environmental and wildlife health disturbances, including the 2013 mass mortality of over 300 manatees in the Indian River Lagoon. The aim of this study was to explore the use of perinatal ketamine to see if it can be used for the reduction of postpartum depression (PPD) following cesarean section (C-section). PubMed, Cochrane, and Web of Science were the primary databases used for this review. Search terms used on January 5, 2024 incorporated "ketamine," "C-section," "postpartum depression," and related synonyms. The criteria for inclusion centered on studies published between January 1, 2008 and January 5, 2024. Maternal mortality remains a significant issue in New Jersey, particularly in the Southern counties where rates are alarmingly high. This study investigates barriers faced by mothers in these areas, utilizing data from state health departments, as well as the CDC. Findings reveal clear disparities in healthcare access and resources, exacerbated by high poverty and rural settings. Proposed interventions include educational posters and community workshops to empower expecting mothers and families. However, challenges such as low attendance and limited effectiveness of interventions underscore the need for comprehensive, sustainable solutions to tackle maternal mortality in Southern New Jersey.

Mature cystic teratomas (MCTs) constitute 70% of all ovarian neoplasms. They typically present with nonspecific symptoms such as pain and nausea. They account for approximately 2% of all primary ovarian malignant cancers and are predominately diagnosed via ultrasound. Computed tomography may be necessary if malignancy is suspected. A large proportion of preterm deliveries is affected by intra-amniotic inflammation, which can occur in the presence (intra-amniotic infection) or absence (sterile intra-amniotic inflammation) of microbes. Studies have shown an association between intra-amniotic inflammation, cervical shortening, and changes in the cervicovaginal microbiome. However, their causal relationships are unknown. In this report, we present the case of a pediatric patient arriving to the Pediatric Emergency Department (PED) for evaluation of right lower quadrant (RLQ) abdominal pain, who was found to have an ovarian torsion. Wernicke’s encephalopathy (WE) is a neurological disorder secondary to thiamine deficiency that is precipitated by administration of glucose-containing fluids prior to thiamine supplementation. Though WE is typically diagnosed among alcoholics (12.5%), the prevalence among nonalcoholics can vary from 0.04-0.13%. Around 30-40% of patients with underlying thiamine deficiency will only experience one of the symptoms from the typical triad, with the complete triad (encephalopathy, oculomotor dysfunction/nystagmus, and ataxia) only evident among 5-16% of the population. Among the non-alcoholic patient population presenting with WE, a history of vomiting is more frequent. While nausea affects around 80% of pregnant women, an extreme form …

Fitz-Hugh-Curtis Syndrome is a manifestation of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) associated with Chlamydia trachomatis infections and less frequently with Neisseria gonorrhea.

PID affects sexually active women (15-30 years old) and accounts for 750,000 cases each year.

The case presented illustrates a female who presented with a small bowel obstruction and appendicitis, who was incidentally found to have Fitz-Hugh-Curtis Syndrome on laparoscopic exam.
