Gestational Diabetes Mellitus--A Forerunner Of Chronic Disorders In Mother And Child, Romaina Iqbal, Sobia Jawaid, Abdul Jabbar, Rahat Qureshi

Community Health Sciences

Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) can have serious immediate as well as long term consequences, both for the mother as well as the off-spring. It seems that women of south Asian origin are not only more likely to have GDM but also suffer more from the adverse consequences of the disorder. These consequences include the development of type 2 DM in women with a history of GDM and a higher risk of obesity and metabolic syndrome in the off-spring. Pakistani physicians should consider GDM seriously because the WHO states that rise in the prevalence of type 2 DM will mainly occur …

Associations Among Health Literacy Levels And Health Outcomes In Pregnant Women With Pregestational And Gestational Diabetes In An Urban Setting, Rosemary Ann Mclaughlin May 2009

Associations Among Health Literacy Levels And Health Outcomes In Pregnant Women With Pregestational And Gestational Diabetes In An Urban Setting, Rosemary Ann Mclaughlin

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Purpose/Objectives: Poor health literacy is a problem for over 45% of American adults and is associated with a variety of adverse health outcomes. Low health literacy has been associated with poor prenatal care utilization and a higher likelihood of poorer glycemic control. Poor glycemic control can lead to poor birth outcomes for both the mother and infant. Health literacy levels of pregnant women with diabetes can influence these outcomes and need to be known early in the pregnancy. Interventions can influence tighter glycemic control and lessen the impact of diabetes for the mother and infant. Therefore, the purpose of this …

Patterns Of Commodity Food Use Among American Indians, Michelle Chino, Darlene R. Haff, Carolee Dodge Francis Jan 2009

Patterns Of Commodity Food Use Among American Indians, Michelle Chino, Darlene R. Haff, Carolee Dodge Francis

Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research

Objectives: To better understand risks for obesity and diabetes among American Indians.

Methods: Adults from tribes across the country surveyed to explore commodity food use patterns and food choice.

Results: Respondents reported second and third generation commodity food use. Current commodity users stated preferences for canned and packaged meals and were more likely to participate in other federal food programs.

Conclusions: Low-income, nutritionally stressed families relying on federal food programs may be at increased risk of obesity and diet-related chronic conditions due to long-term use of foods that are high in fat and calories and low in fiber.
