Implementing The Fib-4 Tool For Liver Fibrosis Screening In Diabetic Patients In Primary Care, Robert I. Montillano May 2025

Implementing The Fib-4 Tool For Liver Fibrosis Screening In Diabetic Patients In Primary Care, Robert I. Montillano

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts

Abstract

Background: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), formerly non-non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), affects over 1 in 3 adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and is a leading cause of advanced liver fibrosis. Despite guideline support from the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), screening practices remain inconsistent in primary care. The Fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) index is a validated, low-cost, noninvasive tool for fibrosis risk stratification, yet it remains underutilized despite its availability in many electronic health record (EHR) systems.

Purpose: This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) evidence-based practice (EBP) project …

“Shoes Enthused”: The Application Of An Evidence-Based Practice Podiatry Consultation And Footwear Education In Older Adults Living With Diabetes, Alissa Kathleena Gray, Razel Bacuetes Milo May 2024

“Shoes Enthused”: The Application Of An Evidence-Based Practice Podiatry Consultation And Footwear Education In Older Adults Living With Diabetes, Alissa Kathleena Gray, Razel Bacuetes Milo

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts

Background: Poorly fitted footwear contributes to falls in older adults living with diabetes, a population that experiences a baseline increased risk for falls in the presence of diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Despite this, baseline data reveals that 72% of older adults wear poorly fitted shoes with suboptimal shoe features1.

Purpose of Project: Adhering to current evidence-based practice guidelines, the two goals of this project were to educate older adults with diabetes on the characteristics of properly fitted footwear and to increase access to properly fitted shoes via a podiatry consultation. Subsequently, the increased number of optimal footwear will decrease …

Exploring The Relationships Between Health Literacy And Hba1c In A Rural Border Region, Stephen Jaime Jan 2024

Exploring The Relationships Between Health Literacy And Hba1c In A Rural Border Region, Stephen Jaime

Dissertations

Aims/Objectives: The purpose of this study was to describe the relationships between select sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, individual health literacy levels, and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels among Hispanic patients with diabetes living in a rural border region.

Background: The frequency of complications from diabetes can increase as HbA1c levels rise, causing the person with diabetes to be at greater risk for blindness, amputation, or renal failure. Unfortunately, people of Hispanic background are at higher risk of developing diabetes compared to non-Hispanic Whites. Many people living in rural towns that border Mexico are of Hispanic background, increasing their risk of developing …

Enriching The Perioperative Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (Eras) Program For Patients Undergoing Whipple Procedure For Pancreatic Cancer, Natalie E. Fisher May 2022

Enriching The Perioperative Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (Eras) Program For Patients Undergoing Whipple Procedure For Pancreatic Cancer, Natalie E. Fisher

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts

Pancreatic cancer remains one of the most complex and lethal diseases worldwide with surgical resection as a major treatment choice. Although surgery may be one of the only options for advanced pancreatic cancer, it is not without a lengthy hospital stay, a long list of possible postoperative complications, and an increased risk for readmission after discharge. Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) programs have been implemented for years in other surgical services for cancer care. These programs have now been extended and researched to include patients undergoing surgery for pancreatic cancer. These programs are designed to assist patients and their families …

The Associations Of Chronic Stress, Social Support, Health Behaviors And Metabolic Syndrome Among Hispanic Women, Edna Esquer May 2021

The Associations Of Chronic Stress, Social Support, Health Behaviors And Metabolic Syndrome Among Hispanic Women, Edna Esquer

Dissertations

The Associations of Chronic Stress, Social Support, Health Behaviors and Metabolic Syndrome Among Hispanic Women

Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) prevalence is 25% among Mexican American women 30 – 49 years of age, compared to 22% among non-Hispanic Whites in the United States. Little is known about the additional contributions of chronic stress, social support and health behaviors to the development of MetS among this population.

Purpose: Describe the associations between chronic stress, social support, and health behaviors and the presence of MetS in Hispanic women living in an underserved community.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study design. The Adult Treatment Panel …

Implementing A Basal-Bolus Insulin Regimen Via A Manual Insulin Pump Device, Helen Stearns May 2020

Implementing A Basal-Bolus Insulin Regimen Via A Manual Insulin Pump Device, Helen Stearns

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts

Abstract

Purpose:The purpose of this evidence-based practice project is to decrease glycated hemoglobin (HgbA1C) levelsby initiating use of a manual insulin pump in patients with Type II Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) with poor glycemic control who are on multiple daily insulin injections (MDII).

Background: Uncontrolled hyperglycemia is associated with a myriad of complications and co-morbidities that are generally associated with vascular changes that include nephropathy, neuropathy, blindness, stroke, and heart disease (Winter et al., 2015). Coronary artery disease and cerebrovascular disease alone accounts for approximately 65% of the deaths in diabetic patients (Molinaro & Dauscher, 2017). Achieving and maintaining therapeutic …
