Research Symposium
Background: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease often complicated by extraintestinal manifestations, with skin involvement seen in up to 15% of patients. Typical lesions include erythema nodosum and pyoderma gangrenosum, but abscess-like cutaneous lesions are almost always assumed to be infectious. Rare case reports describe sterile, culture-negative abscesses arising during UC flares, yet their true prevalence is unknown. We present the case of a young man with UC who developed multiple aseptic skin abscesses in parallel with active proctitis.
Case Presentation: A 19-year-old man with prior Clostridioides difficile infection and subtotal colectomy (rectal preservation) presented with malaise, …

Improving Patient Education For The Management Of Crohn’S Disease, Mari K. Seward
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project
For patients with Crohn’s disease, it can become overwhelming to learn how Crohn’s disease develops, the different types of management skills, and different treatment options. Many patients even feel they are not well educated on their diagnosis. Crohn’s disease patients typically have a poor quality of life. By improving the education given to patients and teaching ways to self-manage symptoms, their quality of life could be improved. It has also been shown that Crohn's disease can become worse over time with its symptoms (Definition & Facts for Crohn's Disease, n.d.). Due to this, by teaching patients' different triggers, symptoms, and …

Background: Depression and anxiety are prevalent in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and may adversely influence outcomes. We evaluated the impact of comorbid mood disorders on clinical outcomes among IBD patients treated with anti–IL-23 agents.
Methods: Using a global de-identified electronic health record network, adults with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis initiating an anti–IL-23 agent were identified. Cohort 1 included patients with a documented mood disorder (depression and/or anxiety) at or prior to treatment initiation; Cohort 2 included those without mood disorders. Propensity score matching (1:1) on demographics and comorbidities yielded 3,546 patients per cohort. Primary outcomes included inpatient/ED encounters, abscess/fistula, …

Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) confers elevated colorectal cancer (CRC) risk, but comparative long-term neoplastic risks between anti-TNF and gut-selective or IL-12/23–targeted biologics remain incompletely defined. We evaluated 5-year risks of CRC and GI neoplasia in IBD patients treated with infliximab versus vedolizumab and ustekinumab.
Methods: Using the TriNetX federated research network, two parallel 5-year propensity score–matched cohort analyses were conducted among adults with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis initiating infliximab, vedolizumab, or ustekinumab between 2018–2024. Patients with prior CRC, colectomy, or baseline comparator biologic exposure were excluded. The infliximab–vedolizumab analysis matched 13,111 patients per cohort; the infliximab–ustekinumab analysis matched …

Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is associated with increased colorectal cancer (CRC) risk, but comparative neoplastic risks across biologic classes remain uncertain. We evaluated 5-year risks of CRC and GI neoplasia in IBD patients treated with adalimumab versus vedolizumab and ustekinumab using real-world data.
Methods: Using the TriNetX Global Collaborative Network, two parallel 5-year propensity score–matched cohort analyses were conducted among adults with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis initiating adalimumab, vedolizumab, or ustekinumab between 2018–2024, excluding patients with prior CRC or colectomy. The adalimumab–vedolizumab analysis matched 13,292 patients per cohort; the adalimumab–ustekinumab analysis matched 14,591 per cohort. Primary outcomes were …

Facilitators And Inhibitors To First Adult Care Visits In The Transition From Paediatric To Adult Orientated Inflammatory Bowel Disease Healthcare, Joanna Rea
Theses
Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) can be a very debilitating disease and it is found to be more extensive in children with rapid early progression (Van Limbergen et al., 2008). As adolescents, these children transition from paediatric to adult oriented care. The first adult care visits are a pivotal phase of a successful transition process, where adolescents potentially begin to actively take control of their disease. The aim of this study is to explore the inhibitors and facilitators to first adult care visits in the transition process from paediatric to adult oriented IBD healthcare.
Methods: An exploratory, descriptive, qualitative approach …

Title: Shingles Vaccine: Identifying high risk groups in the IBD clinic setting
Background: The Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) population is an immunocompromised patient population who is at risk for Herpes Zoster (HZ) due to their medication regimen, which further compromises their immune system. It can be difficult for patients to receive appropriate preventative health maintenance measures due to patients’ fears, primary care providers’ lack of knowledge, and gastroenterologists not addressing what may be considered primary care topics. Furthermore, evidence demonstrates that IBD patients have low vaccination rates despite insurance coverage.

Pediatric inflammatory bowel disease (pIBD) is a chronic heterogeneous disorder. This study looks at the burden of common and rare coding mutations within 41 genes comprising the NOD signaling pathway in pIBD patients. 136 pIBD and 106 control samples underwent whole-exome sequencing. We compared the burden of common, rare and private mutation between these two groups using the SKAT-O test. An independent replication cohort of 33 cases and 111 controls was used to validate significant findings. We observed variation in 40 of 41 genes comprising the NOD signaling pathway. Four genes were significantly associated with disease in the discovery cohort …
