BACKGROUND: There is a need for improved approaches to rhythm control therapy of atrial fibrillation (AF).

METHODS: The effectiveness of flecainide (1.5 µmol/L) and ibutilide (20 nmol/L), alone and in combination, to cardiovert and prevent AF recurrence was studied in canine-isolated coronary-perfused right atrioventricular preparations. We also examined the safety of the combination of flecainide (1.5 µmol/L) and ibutilide (50 nmol/L) using canine left ventricular wedge preparations.

RESULTS: Sustained AF (>1 hour) was inducible in 100%, 60%, 20%, and 0% of atria in the presence of acetylcholine alone, acetylcholine+ibutilide, acetylcholine+flecainide, and acetylcholine+ibutilide+flecainide, respectively. When used alone, flecainide and ibutilide …

AIMS: Atrial fibrillation (AF) in patients with cardiac amyloidosis (CA) has been linked with a worse prognosis. The current study aimed to determine the outcomes of AF catheter ablation in patients with CA.

METHODS AND RESULTS: The Nationwide Readmissions Database (2015-2019) was used to identify patients with AF and concomitant heart failure. Among these, patients who underwent catheter ablation were classified into two groups, patients with and without CA. Postoperative atrial fibrillation remains one of the most common complications after cardiac surgery despite surgical and medical advances in the field. While generally transient, postoperative atrial fibrillation increases long-term morbidity and mortality, hospital length of stay, and financial obligation. The postoperative heart's unique chemical and physical properties make tactics for preventing and treating postoperative atrial fibrillation differ from classic atrial fibrillation management. Atrial fibrillation (a-fib) is one of the most frequently encountered and studied arrhythmias in medicine. The presence of A-fib in the post-operative period of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery is of particular concern for clinicians as this presents risks of post-operative stroke, hospital readmission, or anticoagulation dilemmas depending on the patient’s comorbidities. In this case study, we present 5 patients who were treated with dronedarone prior to undergoing open heart procedures. We subsequently followed each patients clinical course paying close attention for any evidence of post-operative a-fib.

Left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) is a non-pharmacologic approach for stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation. The impact of comorbidity burden on adverse outcomes following LAAC is very important for clinical decision making. Cohort-based observational study was conducted to evaluate the association of comorbidity burden with in-hospital complications. Of 3294 participants (mean age was 75.7±8.2 years), 60% were male and 86% whites. The majority of participants undergoing LAAC presented with a significant number of comorbid conditions. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common form of cardiac arrhythmia. Recently, four novel heterozygous Cx40 mutations, K107R, L223M, Q236H, and I257L were identified in 4 of 310 unrelated AF patients. To study possible alterations associated with these mutants, we studied their localization and function using gap junction (GJ)-deficient model cells. Cell pairs expressing Q236H alone or together with wildtype Cx43 showed a significantly lower coupling conductance. Impaired GJ function and dominant negative action on Cx43 of this mutant are consistent with previous findings on the majority of AF-linked Cx40 mutants. Background: With over 40 years of demonstrated clinical efficacy, warfarin remains the world’s most used pharmaceutical to prevent ischemic stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). However, warfarin has many challenges. Thus, despite known effectiveness, warfarin is a leading cause to drug-induced morbidity and mortality.
