Reactive Oxygen Species In Acute Coronary Syndrome, Fernando Cisneros, Alex Zuo Mar 2024

Reactive Oxygen Species In Acute Coronary Syndrome, Fernando Cisneros, Alex Zuo

Research Symposium

Background: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) have diverse functions in biomedicine, providing roles in cellular metabolism and signaling while posing a threat to cellular components through oxidative damage. This poster explores the significance of ROS in various cardiovascular diseases, specifically hypertension, atherosclerosis, and myocardial infarction, all of which are associated with acute coronary syndrome which are the conditions and symptoms caused by ischemia. We have studied over 30 most recent or related literature to the topic and determine important roles of ROS in cardiovascular disease. Correlations have linked ROS culprits, particularly upregulation of NADPH oxidase (NOX) 2 and NOX 4, with …

The Impact Of Gender And Race When Using The Grace Acs Score To Predict Mortality, Ikechukwu Ogbu, Napatkamon Ayutyanont, Sarah Wilson, Hossein Akhondi

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Background

Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) causes significant global morbidity and mortality and requires early risk stratification. The global registry of acute coronary events (GRACE) score is a well-known, validated risk stratification system that does not include race and gender. We aimed to assess whether the addition of gender and race could add to the predictability of the GRACE score model.

Methods

We performed a retrospective cohort study of 46 764 ACS patients from the files of a national healthcare system. We compared the predictability of the GRACE score in conjunction with gender and race versus the original GRACE score. Different …

Chewed Versus Swallowed Ticagrelor In P2y12 Inhibitor-Naïve Patients Undergoing Percutaneous Coronary Intervention, Thomas F. Wilson, Muddasir Ashraf, M. Fuad Jan, Tonga Nfor, Louie Kostopoulos, Joaquin Solis, Jayant Khitha, Ahmad Khraisat, Anthony C. Defranco, Tanvir Bajwa, Suhail Q. Allaqaband

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

Purpose: Dual antiplatelet therapy is standard for patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with stents. Traditionally, patients swallow the loading dose of a P2Y12 inhibitor before or during PCI. Time to achieve adequate platelet inhibition after swallowing the loading dose varies significantly. Chewed tablets may allow more rapid inhibition of platelet aggregation. However, data for this strategy in patients with stable ischemic heart disease or non-ST-elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTE-ACS) are less robust.

Methods: In this single-center prospective trial, 112 P2Y12-naïve patients with stable ischemic heart disease or NSTE-ACS on aspirin therapy and who received ticagrelor after coronary angiography but …

Introduction: COVID-19 has manifested a striking disarray in healthcare access and provision, particularly amongst patients presenting with life-threatening ischemic heart disease (IHD). The paucity of data from low-middle income countries has limited our understanding of the consequential burden in the developing world. We aim to compare volumes, presentations, management strategies, and outcomes of IHD amongst patients presenting in the same calendar months before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional analysis at the Aga Khan University Hospital, one of the premier tertiary care centres in Pakistan. Data were collected on all adult patients (>18 years) …

Periprocedural And In-Hospital Outcomes Among Percutaneous Coronary Intervention In Saphenous Vein Graft: A Retrospective Observational Study At A Tertiary Care Hospital In South Asian Country, Abdul Baqi, Sheema Saadia Apr 2021

Periprocedural And In-Hospital Outcomes Among Percutaneous Coronary Intervention In Saphenous Vein Graft: A Retrospective Observational Study At A Tertiary Care Hospital In South Asian Country, Abdul Baqi, Sheema Saadia

Section of Cardiology

Background: Saphenous vein graft (SVG) may occlude either early or several months to years after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Doing re-do CABG surgery is associated with higher complication and mortality rate as compared to percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in SVG. However, PCI of SVG is associated with more periprocedural and in-hospital complications as compared to PCI of native coronary arteries. Due to the scarcity of local data in this regard, this study was designed to estimate the periprocedural and in-hospital outcomes among PCI in SVG.
Objectives: We aim to study the periprocedural and in-hospital outcomes among patients who …

The Efficacy Of Adding Eicosapentaenoic Acid To Statin Monotherapy In The Prevention Of Acute Coronary Syndrome In Patients With Coronary Artery Disease, Carlo Escudero Jan 2020

The Efficacy Of Adding Eicosapentaenoic Acid To Statin Monotherapy In The Prevention Of Acute Coronary Syndrome In Patients With Coronary Artery Disease, Carlo Escudero

Capstone Showcase

Introduction: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a chronic medical condition caused by the buildup of plaque within the coronary artery endothelium. If left untreated it can progress to an acute coronary syndrome (ACS) which can lead to myocardial ischemia and death. Statins are lipid lowering agents used in clinical practice for the medical management of CAD. However, incidence of major adverse cardiovascular (CV) events still occurs despite optimal statin therapy. Currently eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) has been promoted to be effective when added to statin therapy in lowering the incidence of CV events in patients with hypercholesterolemia. This paper will address …

Kounis Syndrome: A Simple Mri With Contrast Turned Into A Life Threatening Condition, Ahmed Amro, Kanaan Mansoor, Mohammad Amro, Amal Sobeih, Mehiar El-Hamdani

Marshall Journal of Medicine

Kounis syndrome [KS] is a hypersensitivity coronary disorder induced by various allergens. It is a rare condition which has been reported in every age group (2-90 years), every race and geographic location, its incidence has been reported to range from 7.9 to 19.4 per 100,000. The presentation of the detrimental effects of KS on coronary arteries ranges from vasospastic angina to allergic myocardial infarction.

Drugs are the major iatrogenic cause of KS, but virtually everything in the environment around us can cause KS. In recent years contrast mediums used in the radiologic investigation have come forth as a leading cause …

BACKGROUND: To describe longitudinal trajectories of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) after hospitalization with an acute coronary syndrome (ACS), their associations with baseline angina characteristics, and associations with anxiety, depression, and cognitive impairment.

METHODS: TRACE-CORE participants (N=1,613) completed the SF-36 during hospitalization for ACS and 1, 3, & 6 months post-discharge. Latent growth curves identified trajectories of physical and mental components of HRQOL (MCS and PCS) and sequential multiple logistic regression estimated associations between trajectories and angina characteristics.

RESULTS: Participants (N=1613) had mean age 63.3 (SD 11.4) years, 33.0% female, and 78.2% non-Hispanic white. We identified 2 MCS trajectories: AVERAGE …

Novel Approach To Identify Optimal Metabotypes Of Elongase And Desaturase Activities In Prevention Of Acute Coronary Syndrome, Nathan L. Tintle, John W. Newman, Gregory C. Shearer Feb 2015

Novel Approach To Identify Optimal Metabotypes Of Elongase And Desaturase Activities In Prevention Of Acute Coronary Syndrome, Nathan L. Tintle, John W. Newman, Gregory C. Shearer

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

Both metabolomic and genomic approaches are valuable for risk analysis, however typical approaches evaluating differences in means do not model the changes well. Gene polymorphisms that alter function would appear as distinct populations, or metabotypes, from the predominant one, in which case risk is revealed as changed mixing proportions between control and case samples. Here we validate a model accounting for mixed populations using biomarkers of fatty acid metabolism derived from a case/control study of acute coronary syndrome subjects in which both metabolomic and genomic approaches have been used previously. We first used simulated data to show improved power and …

Redefining Myocardial Infarction: What Is New In The Esc/Accf/Aha/Whf Third Universal Definition Of Myocardial Infarction, Hani Jneid, Mahboob Alam, Salim S. Virani, Biykem Bozkurt Jul 2013

Redefining Myocardial Infarction: What Is New In The Esc/Accf/Aha/Whf Third Universal Definition Of Myocardial Infarction, Hani Jneid, Mahboob Alam, Salim S. Virani, Biykem Bozkurt

Office of the Provost

Myocardial infarction (MI) is a major cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Each year, an estimated 785,000 persons will have a new MI in the United States alone, and approximately every minute an American will succumb to one.1 In addition, MI has major psychological and legal implications for patients and the society and is an important outcome measure in research studies. The prevalence of MI provides useful data regarding the burden of coronary artery disease and offers insight into health care planning, policy, and resource allocation. The importance of accurately and reproducibly defining MI is therefore self-evident. The Third Universal …

Development Of A Positive Psychology Intervention For Patients With Acute Cardiovascular Disease, Jeff C. Huffman, Carol A. Mastromauro, Julia K. Boehm, Rita Seabrook, Gregory L. Fricchione, John W. Denninger, Sonja Lyubomirsky

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

The management of depression and other negative psychological states in cardiac patients has been a focus of multiple treatment trials, though such trials have not led to substantial improvements in cardiac outcomes. In contrast, there has been minimal focus on interventions to increase positive psychological states in cardiac patients, despite the fact that optimism and other positive states have been associated with superior cardiovascular outcomes. Our objective was to develop an 8-week, phone-based positive psychology intervention for patients hospitalized with acute cardiac disease (acute coronary syndrome or decompensated heart failure). Such an intervention would consist of positive psychology exercises adapted …
