Study objectives: This study analyzed the behavior of untrained volunteers when presented with a simulated cardiac arrest and an automated external defibrillator (AED). The primary hypothesis of this study was that volunteers could, with no advance training, operate an AED to deliver a defibrillation to a mannequin in 3 minutes or less at least 75% of the time. The secondary hypothesis was that this population would perform all of the tasks considered essential in AED use (establish unresponsiveness, check for breathing, give 2 rescue breaths, check for pulse, apply electrodes correctly, clear patient, activate emergency medical services (EMS) response, and …

The cardiac correlate of attention is a deceleration in heart rate, controlled by the parasympathetic division of the autonomic nervous system. This has been extensively studied in infants; the findings indicate that this deceleration is affected by a number of factors, several mediated by the vagus nerve. However, the effects of denervation on this response are not known. Studies with adult heart transplant recipients have shown attenuated acceleration in response to stressful mental tasks. BACKGROUND: Mortality rates for coronary heart disease are higher in blacks than in whites. OBJECTIVES: To examine differences between blacks and whites in the manifestation of symptoms of coronary heart disease and in delay in seeking treatment. METHODS: Patients were directly observed as they came to an emergency department with symptoms suggestive of coronary heart disease. The sample included 40 blacks and 191 whites with a final diagnosis of angina or acute myocardial infarction. RESULTS: After controlling for pertinent demographic and clinical characteristics, logistic regression analysis revealed that blacks were more likely than whites to have shortness of breath (odds …

Is baldness a risk factor for heart attack? Aim: To examine the association between male pattern baldness and the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) events. Desing, setting and participants:Retrospective cohort study among 22,071 US male physicians aged 40 to 84 years enrolled in the Physicians' Health Study. Of these, 19,112 were free of CHD at baseline and completed a questionnaire at the 11-year follow-up concerning their pattern of hair loss at age 45 years. Background—An inverse association between moderate alcohol consumption and coronary heart disease (CHD) has been observed in several epidemiological studies. To assess whether a similar association exists among diabetics, we examined the relation between light to moderate alcohol consumption and CHD in men with and without diabetes mellitus in a prospective cohort study.
