Background: Infective endocarditis (IE) results from bacterial adhesion to endocardial tissue and valvular apparatus. While viridans group streptococci and Enterococcus species are associated with subacute disease, Staphylococcus aureus, including methicillin-resistant strains (MRSA), is a leading cause of more acutely destructive presentations. The entry of these pathogens can occur through surgical and dental procedures, intravenous drug use, or less apparent etiology. Classic peripheral stigmata (Osler nodes, Janeway lesions, splinter hemorrhages, Roth spots) are now uncommon but clinically meaningful. Current guidelines emphasize rapid multimodality imaging to detect cerebral and systemic emboli in symptomatic IE. We present a 50-year-old man with S. aureus …

The Triple Threat: Hiv, Nonadherence, And Substance Use Driving Premature Coronary Events, Jose J. Loayza Pintado, Taiwo Ajani, Angelica Lopez Jesus, Aura Calderon, Jose Pena
Research Symposium
Background: People living with HIV (PLWH) experience nearly double the risk of premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and often present with acute coronary syndromes at younger ages [1]. Chronic inflammation, immune activation, and drug–drug interactions between antiretrovirals and antiplatelet agents further contribute to accelerated atherosclerosis and poor outcomes after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) [2,3]. Importantly, in-stent restenosis (ISR) remains disproportionately frequent in PLWH despite modern drug-eluting stents, with medication nonadherence compounding risk [4]. We present a young woman with HIV and recurrent myocardial infarction due to rapid ISR, underscoring the impact of inflammation, adherence, and pharmacologic interactions on secondary prevention.

From Risk Factor To Cause Of Death: Hypertensive Heart Disease And The Changing Composition Of Heart Disease Mortality In Texas Compared With The United States, 1999–2020, Jose J. Loayza Pintado, Angelica Lopez Jesus, Aura Calderon, Jorge Aboytes Trevino, Daniela Hernandez
Research Symposium
Background: Heart disease mortality has declined nationwide, but Texas continues to experience higher rates than the United States overall. At the same time, hypertensive heart disease (HHD) has become more prominent within cardiovascular mortality statistics. Whether this shift reflects a growing hypertension-driven contribution to the Texas–U.S. gap has not been well quantified. We compared long-term trends in HHD mortality and the presence of HHD on death certificates among heart disease deaths in Texas versus the United States.
Methods: We analyzed CDC WONDER Underlying Cause of Death and Multiple Cause of Death files, 1999–2020, restricted to decedents aged ≥25 years. HHD …

Unraveling Genetic Links Between Diabetes And Heart Failure-A Machine Learning Approach, Sunakhi Sahoo, Marzieh Ayati
Research Symposium
Background: Diabetic heart failure (DHF) is defined as a chronic and progressive disease which is associated with both diabetes and heart failure (HF). Even though there have been many developments in the knowledge of these diseases, there is still much to learn about the genetic crossovers between the two. In this study, we identified genes that are associated with diabetic heart failure and heart failure by using gene expression data from patients with DHF, HF, and a control group of patients who died of natural causes. We sought to identify genes that had altered expression levels which could possibly play …

Maternal Health And Congenital Heart Defects: Investigating Ventricular Septal Defects In South Texas Region 11, Miguel A. Lopez, Sophia Moon, Jonathan M. Hebert, Padmanabhan Rengasamy
Research Symposium
Congenital heart defects are a known risk factor for early childhood mortality and can be traced to poor maternal health, a crisis plaguing the South Texas region. This perspective research project utilizes previously computed data on the prevalence of ventricular septal defects (VSD) in South Texas region 11 combined with a comprehensive literature review to investigate the correlation between both maternal obesity and diabetes with VSD. Current literature supports a significant association between maternal diabetes and VSD, with one Russian study reporting an eight to nine fold increased risk in VSD in children born to diabetic mothers. By contrast, the …

Acute Heart Failure Secondary To Coxsackie Dilated Cardiomyopathy In An Immunocompetent Adult: A Case Report From A Social Disparities Perspective, Barbara Malaga-Espinoza, Donnel Dockery-Joseph, Jessica Daza, Oscar Lopez, Andres Suarez Parraga
Research Symposium
Introduction: Cardiomyopathies (CM) are defined as myocardial disorders in the absence of coronary artery disease, hypertension, valvular or congenital heart conditions. Dilated CM is characterized by dilation and impaired contraction of one or both ventricles. The prevalence of this condition is underestimated because of variable disease expression and challenging diagnosis. We present the case of an undocumented and immunocompetent patient who debuted with acute heart failure after being exposed to significant environmental stressors.
Case Presentation: A 44-year-old Hispanic gentleman with a history of untreated hypertension presented to the ED with severely persistent left-sided chest pain at rest associated with frontoparietal …

The Prevalence And Impact Of Extrarenal Involvement In Fibromuscular Dysplasia: A Systematic Review, Alyssa L. Sepulveda, Yolanda V. Gutierrez, Ronald A. Shaju
Research Symposium
Background: Fibromuscular Dysplasia (FMD) is a non-inflammatory vascular disease affecting medium-sized arteries, characterized by arterial stenosis, dissection, or aneurysm formation. While renal arteries are most involved, extrarenal manifestations, particularly in the carotid and vertebral arteries, are increasingly recognized. These non-renal presentations can lead to complications such as dissection, aneurysm, and ischemic events, influencing diagnosis and management strategies. This systematic review evaluates the prevalence and clinical impact of extrarenal FMD, with a focus on its role in patient outcomes and treatment.
Methods: A systematic review of PubMed, Science Direct, and Cochrane was conducted to identify studies published from 2000 to 2025. …
Reactive Oxygen Species In Acute Coronary Syndrome, Fernando Cisneros, Alex Zuo
Reactive Oxygen Species In Acute Coronary Syndrome, Fernando Cisneros, Alex Zuo
Research Symposium
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are formed in metabolism, cellular signaling, immune response, antimicrobial defense, and detoxification. Oxidative damage through overproduction of ROS or dysregulation of ROS regulation may result in oxidative stress associated with DNA damage, protein damage, mitochondrial dysfunction, and lipid peroxidation. Additionally, the accumulation of dysfunction of cellular components may manifest as diseases that contribute to the predisposition of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). This poster meticulously explores the significance of ROS in various cardiovascular stressors, including hypertension, thrombogenesis, vascular remodeling, lipid peroxidation, cellular proliferation, atherogenesis, and vasoconstriction. These stressors collectively contribute to ACS associated with ischemia. Furthermore, autophagic …

Research Symposium
Introduction: Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is a descriptive term for NAFLD (Non-alcoholic) physiopathology associated with obesity. The age of onset linked to body fat distribution is poorly studied. Therefore, we aimed to assess the body fat effect on liver fat infiltration and stiffness (LSt) mediated by insulin resistance (IR).
Methods: After obtaining informed consent, five hundred freshmen from two universities in Reynosa, Mexico (UMAN & UAT) were enrolled in the study. They completed a questionnaire focused on familial cardiometabolic risk and provided anthropometric measurements. In a subset of N=200, we obtained blood samples for biochemical measurements, body fat percentage …

Research Symposium
Background: Disruption in the balance between coagulation and bleeding can result in varying phenotypes such as hypercoagulability and can lead to the development of cardiovascular disease. In our study utilizing extended families of Mexican-Americans from South Texas, we performed a search for protein-altering variants influencing coagulation potential.
Methods: Mexican-Americans in the study were genotyped using Illumina-(human)-exome-24 chip to screen for protein-altering variants. Variants were analyzed for their association with FII activity, aPTT, and PT. Linear-mixed-model analysis was performed to estimate trait heritabilities and to interrogate single nucleotide variations (SNV) for evidence of genetic association. To control for multiple testing, associations …
Characterization Of Epithelial Growth Factor Transcripts Identified In Crotalus Atrox Venom, Ivan Lopez, Ying Jia
Characterization Of Epithelial Growth Factor Transcripts Identified In Crotalus Atrox Venom, Ivan Lopez, Ying Jia
Research Symposium
Epithelial Growth Factor (EGF) is the primary source in regeneration and stimulation of essential fibroblasts cells commonly found in epithelium. Studies have shown that snake venom components are becoming a growing factor in treating illnesses such as cancer, muscular dystrophy, chronic pain, blood pressure, blood clotting, etc. EGF in human cells contains a promising quaternary structure that can bind to snake venom metalloproteinases, proposing a means of activating biochemical responses through protein-protein interactions to regulate unwanted cellular functions. This supports promising research in achieving a greater understanding of regulation along cellular pathways through ligands, increasing the likelihood of targeting unwanted …

Recognizing Fatal Electrocardiography Rhythm Changes In A Patient With Severe Hyperkalemia And Prevention Of Cardiac Arrest With Medical Management In Small Hospitals, Semenawit B. Burka, Eduardo Flores, Johnathan Gyebi-Agyepong
Research Symposium
Background: Hyperkalemia is one of the most potentially lethal electrolyte disorders. Severe hyperkalemia is defined as a serum potassium level of >6.5 mEq/L. The risk of arrhythmias increases with potassium values >6.5 mEq/L. Small elevation above this value can cause peaked T waves to quickly progress to ventricular fibrillation or asystole. The longer the patient has elevated potassium concentrations, the greater the risk of sudden deterioration. Therefore, recognizing ECG changes and acting quickly to decrease potassium concentration is important to prevent hyperkalemic cardiac arrest.
Case Presentation: A 26-Year-old man with a history of congenital hypoaldosteronism presented to the emergency department …

Using Cartesian Coordinate Systems To Create, Classify, And Retrieve Biomedical Time-Series: Applications To 24-Hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring, Antonio Garcia, Gladys E. Maestre, John Blangero, Jesus D. Melgarejo, Julio Facelli
Research Symposium
Background: Ambulatory Blood Pressure Measurement (ABPM) allows physicians to monitor blood pressure variability under everyday living conditions and predicts clinical outcomes better than conventional blood-pressure measurement. ABPM can demonstrate mean arterial pressure (MAP) behavior over 24 hours relevant to clinical practice, such as nocturnal hypertension or increased blood pressure variability. We hypothesized that individuals with the same cardiovascular health status would have the same MAP signal (MAPs) waveform.
Methods: This study reutilizes a data subset from the IDACO Consortium to create 24-hour MAPs. We assigned all the MAPs to data matrix X, performed principal components analysis (PCA) to X, and …
