We sought to determine how biomarkers known to be associated with hypertension-induced end-organ injury complement the use of systolic blood pressure (SBP) for cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk prediction at different ages. Using data from visits 2 (1990 to 1992) and 5 (2011 to 2013) of the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study, 3 models were used to predict CVD (composite of coronary heart disease, stroke, and heart failure). Precision medicine is part of the logical evolution of contemporary evidence-based medicine that seeks to reduce errors and optimize outcomes when making medical decisions and health recommendations. Diabetes affects hundreds of millions of people worldwide, many of whom will develop life-threatening complications and die prematurely. BACKGROUND & AIMS: Metabolic biomarkers with pathophysiological relevance is lacking in pediatric diabetes. We aimed to identify novel metabolic biomarkers in pediatric type 1 (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D). We hypothesized that (1) targeted plasma metabolomics, focused on plasma amino acid concentrations, could identify distinctively altered patterns in children with T1D or T2D, and (2) there are specific changes in concentrations of metabolites related to branch chain amino acids (BCAA) and arginine metabolism in children with T2D.

Bioresorbable perivascular scaffolds loaded with antiproliferative agents have been shown to enhance arteriovenous fistula (AVF) maturation by inhibiting neointimal hyperplasia (NIH). These scaffolds, which can mimic the three-dimensional architecture of the vascular extracellular matrix, also have an untapped potential for the local delivery of cell therapies against NIH. BACKGROUND: Gastroparesis (GP) is characterized by delayed gastric emptying in the absence of mechanical obstruction.

OBJECTIVE: Genetic predisposition may play a role; however, investigation at the genome-wide level has not been performed.

METHODS: We carried out a genome-wide association study (GWAS) meta-analysis on (i) 478 GP patients from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases Gastroparesis Clinical Research Consortium (GpCRC) compared to 9931 population-based controls from the University of Michigan Health and Retirement Study; and (ii) 402 GP cases compared to 48,340 non-gastroparesis controls from the Michigan Genomics Initiative. European-specific policies for tuberculosis (TB) elimination require identification of key populations that benefit from TB screening.

We aimed to identify groups of foreign-born individuals residing in European countries that benefit most from targeted TB prevention screening.

The Tuberculosis Network European Trials group collected, by cross-sectional survey, numbers of foreign-born TB patients residing in European Union (EU) countries, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom (UK) in 2020 from the 10 highest ranked countries of origin in terms of TB cases in each country of residence. Loss-of-function mutations in MECP2 cause Rett syndrome (RTT), a severe neurological disorder that mainly affects girls. Mutations in MECP2 do occur in males occasionally and typically cause severe encephalopathy and premature lethality. Recently, we identified a missense mutation (c.353G>A, p.Gly118Glu [G118E]), which has never been seen before in MECP2, in a young boy who suffered from progressive motor dysfunction and developmental delay. Patients with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) have shown clinical improvement after secundum atrial septal defect (ASD) closure. We sought to determine if this post‐ASD closure improvement is secondary to the expected course in BPD patients or related to the closure itself. A novel BPD‐ASD score was created to assess patients' clinical status (higher score = worse disease) and applied to 10 BPD‐ASD inpatients weighing ≤ 10 kg who underwent ASD closure. Identification of tumor antigens presented by the human leucocyte antigen (HLA) molecules is essential for the design of effective and safe cancer immunotherapies that rely on T cell recognition and killing of tumor cells. Mass spectrometry (MS)-based immunopeptidomics enables high-throughput, direct identification of HLA-bound peptides from a variety of cell lines, tumor tissues, and healthy tissues. It involves immunoaffinity purification of HLA complexes followed by MS profiling of the extracted peptides using data-dependent acquisition, data-independent acquisition, or targeted approaches. BACKGROUND: Twelve ocular surface disease experts convened to achieve consensus about Demodex blepharitis (DB) using a modified Delphi panel process.

METHODS: Online surveys were administered using scaled, open-ended, true/false, and multiple-choice questions. Consensus for questions using a 1 to 9 Likert scale was predefined as median scores of 7-9 and 1-3. For other question types, consensus was achieved when 8 of 12 panellists agreed. Questions were randomized, and results of each survey informed the following survey.

PURPOSE: IL-2 promotes activation, clonal expansion, and deletion of T cells. IL-2 signals through its heterotrimeric receptor (IL-2R) consisting of the CD25, CD122 and CD132 chains. (1) Background: We previously reported the development of a recombinant protein SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, consisting of the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, adjuvanted with aluminum hydroxide (alum) and CpG oligonucleotides. In mice and non-human primates, our wild-type (WT) RBD vaccine induced high neutralizing antibody titers against the WT isolate of the virus, and, with partners in India and Indonesia, it was later developed into two closely resembling human vaccines, Corbevax and Indovac. IMPORTANCE: Intraoperative identification of tissues through gross inspection during thyroid and parathyroid surgery is challenging yet essential for preserving healthy tissue and improving outcomes for patients.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the performance and clinical applicability of the MasSpec Pen (MSPen) technology for discriminating thyroid, parathyroid, and lymph node tissues intraoperatively.

Aging is a complex biological process that is characterized by low-grade inflammation, called inflammaging. Aging affects multiple organs including eye and lacrimal gland. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) is a pleiotropic cytokine that participates in inflammation, activation of proteases such as cathepsin S, and formation of ectopic lymphoid organs. Using genetic and pharmacological approaches, we investigated the role of TNF in age-related dry eye disease, emphasizing the ocular surface and lacrimal gland inflammation. Background:

Revaccination after hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is critical to prevent morbidity and mortality from vaccine preventable illnesses. While earlier re-vaccination after HCT is desirable, they may be ineffective if deployed before partial reconstitution of adaptive immunity. Increasingly, personalized approaches to re-vaccination after HCT have replaced time-based protocols in order to minimize unvaccinated time and enhance vaccine effectiveness. Furthermore, for revaccination to be maximally beneficial, compliance with, and timely delivery of the complete revaccination schedule is imperative, but rare, and there is little data on strategies to optimize vaccine delivery.

Cranberry offers numerous cardiovascular benefits. According to several studies, this fruit promotes the oxidation of low‐density lipoprotein, enhances high‐density lipoprotein, reduces platelet coagulation, and improves vascular activity. Albino male rats were divided into five groups (n = 5 per group). The control group received intraperitoneal administration of normal saline. The second group was injected with metaproterenol (MET) 3 days a week for 4 weeks. The third, fourth, and fifth groups were given cranberry extract in doses of 75, 100, and 150, respectively, along with heart‐damaging drugs. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether genetic risk for type 1 diabetes (T1D) differentiates the four Aβ subgroups of ketosis-prone diabetes (KPD), where A+ and A- define the presence or absence of islet autoantibodies and β+ and β- define the presence or absence of β-cell function.

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We compared T1D genetic risk scores (GRS) of patients with KPD across subgroups, race/ethnicity, β-cell function, and glycemia.

RESULTS: Among 426 patients with KPD (54% Hispanic, 31% African American, 11% White), rank order of GRS was A+β- > A+β+ = A-β- > A-β+. GRS of A+β- KPD was lower than that of a T1D …

Breast cancer can present as a wide range of cutaneous lesions at the time of diagnosis or months to years after a known diagnosis of breast cancer. Cutaneous sequela of breast cancer, including metastasis, have a diverse range of clinical appearances. Here, we describe the case of a 59-year-old female with stage IV metastatic inflammatory breast carcinoma presenting with a chronic worsening rash on her anterior chest wall. Biopsy results demonstrated metastatic carcinoma cells within the dermal lymphatics, consistent with primary breast cancer. Fatigue surrounding hemodialysis treatments is a common and often debilitating symptom that impacts patients' quality of life. Intradialytic fatigue develops or worsens immediately before hemodialysis and persists through the dialysis treatment. Little is known about associated risk factors or pathophysiology, although it may relate to a classic conditioning response. Postdialysis fatigue (PDF) develops or worsens after hemodialysis and may persist for hours. There is no consensus on how to measure PDF. Estimates for the prevalence of PDF range from 20%-86%, likely due to variation in methods of ascertainment and participant characteristics. Background: Twelve ocular surface disease experts convened to achieve consensus about Demodex blepharitis (DB) using a modified Delphi panel process.

Methods: Online surveys were administered using scaled, open-ended, true/false, and multiple-choice questions. Consensus for questions using a 1 to 9 Likert scale was predefined as median scores of 7-9 and 1-3. For other question types, consensus was achieved when 8 of 12 panellists agreed. Questions were randomized, and results of each survey informed the following survey.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Surveillance of gastric intestinal metaplasia (GIM) may lead to early gastric cancer detection. Our purpose was to externally validate a predictive model for endoscopic GIM previously developed in a veteran population in a second U.S.

METHODS: We previously developed a pre-endoscopy risk model for detection of GIM using 423 GIM cases and 1796 control subjects from the Houston Veterans Affairs Hospital. The model included sex, age, race/ethnicity, smoking, and Helicobacter pylori infection with an area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve (AUROC) of .73 for GIM and .82 for extensive GIM. Myelodysplastic syndromes or neoplasms (MDS) are a heterogeneous group of myeloid clonal disorders characterized by peripheral blood cytopenias, blood and marrow cell dysplasia, and increased risk of evolution to acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Non-coding RNAs, especially microRNAs and long non-coding RNAs, serve as regulators of normal and malignant hematopoiesis and have been implicated in carcinogenesis. This review presents a comprehensive summary of the biology and role of non-coding RNAs, including the less studied circRNA, siRNA, piRNA, and snoRNA as potential prognostic and/or predictive biomarkers or therapeutic targets in MDS.
