In observance of the 35th World AIDS Day, the Holy Cross LGBTQ+ Alumni Network and a multidisciplinary faculty team invited a broad ranging conversation about the historical and current impact and intersection of the HIV/AIDS pandemic on both the Holy Cross community and the wider world.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a very common disease with an estimated 442 million cases worldwide. It is a well-documented independent risk factor for many gastrointestinal pathologies, however, its role in cardiovascular disease (CVD) is unclear, despite its high prevalence in patients with CVD. Although traditionally considered a causative agent of noncardiac chest pain, a common imitator of cardiac chest pain, or an incidentally shared comorbidity in patients with CVD, a number of studies have implicated GERD and its therapies as risk factors for CVD. Autogenous Reproduction By Ornithodoros Turicata (Ixodida: Argasidae) Females And Vertical Transmission Of The Tick-Borne Pathogen Borrelia Turicatae (Spirochaetales: Borreliaceae), Serhii Filatov, Aparna Krishnavajhala, Job E Lopez

Ornithodoros turicata is a vector of relapsing fever spirochetes in North America and transmits Borrelia turicatae to a variety of vertebrate hosts. The remarkably long lifespan of O. turicata and its ability to maintain spirochetes horizontally (between life stages) and vertically (to progeny) promote the perpetuation of B. turicatae in nature. Nevertheless, the reproductive biology of O. turicata is poorly understood. In this report, we collected ticks from a park within a neighborhood of Austin, TX. Due to the underutilization of screening mammography, African American women (AAW) are more likely to experience negative health outcomes after receiving a late-stage breast cancer diagnosis than White Women (WW). The purpose of this article is to examine the roles of the media, health community and the African American church and pastor and their potential impact in AAW screening decisions. Fifteen AAW, ages 45 and older, were invited to participate in a semi-structured interview. Objective: To compare rates and risk factors of severe COVID-19-related outcomes between American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) and non-Hispanic White people (NHW).

Methods: Aggregate Social Vulnerability Index (SVI), COVID-19-related risk factor, hospitalization, and mortality data were obtained from 16 states for January 1, 2020-March 31, 2021. Generalized estimating equation Poisson regression models calculated age-adjusted cumulative incidences, incidence ratios (IR), and 95% confidence intervals (CI) comparing AI/AN and NHW persons by age, sex, and county-level SVI status.

Results: Race data were missing for 42.7% of COVID-19 cases, 24.7% of hospitalizations, and 10.1% of deaths. Risk of AI/AN COVID-19 mortality …

Central hypoventilation syndrome (CHS) is a rare condition resulting from damage to the respiratory centers in the central nervous system (CNS). It can be congenital or acquired and can cause hypoventilation, inadequate gas exchange, and respiratory failure, often during sleep but sometimes even while awake. CHS can lead to respiratory failure and life-threatening complications if not identified promptly. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most common cause of cancer death in the United States. Relative to a 5-year survival rate, CRC patients diagnosed with localized disease accrue a 90% survival rate while those diagnosed with distant-stage disease maintain 14% survival. Mucinous adenocarcinoma (MAC) is a unique subtype of CRC characterized by the presence of extracellular mucin occupying 50% of tumor expansion. Fistula complications of colonic malignancy have rarely been reported and more commonly occur as complications of diverticulitis. Advances in Clinical Medical Research and Healthcare Delivery

Retroperitoneal leiomyomas are rare clinical entities and poses clinical and therapeutic challenges to the benign gynecologist. We present the case of a 51 year-old gravida 2 para 2 with symptomatic leiomyomas undergoing definitive surgical management with total laparoscopic hysterectomy. Intraoperatively, a retroperitoneal mass in the pelvic side was identified, excised, and removed from the abdominal cavity without complications. Final pathology confirmed a leiomyoma.

Background: COVID-19 infection has resulted in more than 620 million infections and 6.6 million deaths. Since the pandemic, many articles have been published on socioeconomic and racial disparities in COVID-19 infection and its outcomes. This article aims to review the impact of race and socioeconomic status on COVID-19 infection and vice versa.

Findings: Most studies showed an increase in COVID infections and hospitalizations in communities of color, with some showing higher mortality rates while others did not. Vaginal Preparation In Cesarean Delivery To Decrease Surgical Site Infections: A Benchmark Study, Angelica Ware

MSN Capstone Projects

This benchmark project intends to decrease the rate of surgical site infections related to cesarean procedures with vaginal preparation through an evidence-based approach. Vaginal preparation is a simple technique that cleanses the vaginal walls by removing microorganisms. The goal of the benchmark project is to promote the implementation of a vaginal preparation policy across any healthcare facility that performs cesarean procedures. Vaginal preparation is intended for scheduled cases, add-on cases, and urgent cases. The benchmark study does not include emergent cesarean deliveries, as vaginal preparation is at the discretion of the physician in those cases.

The primary objective of this randomized trial was to test the effectiveness of the PREDHiCT digital application, which provides educational and supportive navigation to increase willingness to participate in a future clinical trial. The second objective was to test whether PREDHiCT increased clinical trial literacy or enhanced psychological facilitators of clinical trial participation, such as altruism. To test these two objectives, we conducted a 1-month remote decentralized trial with 100 participants who either have a personal or family history of cardiometabolic health conditions, such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. BACKGROUND: To describe short- and mid-term surgical outcomes of patients with Turner syndrome (TS) after cardiovascular interventions.

METHODS: All individuals >12 years of age at the time of surgical repair for cardiovascular disease (valve or coarctation repairs, aortic disease, aortic dissection) from 2002 to 2022 were eligible. The primary endpoint was complications or death within 30 days of intervention. Secondary outcomes included late complications and reinterventions within six months. Combined data from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and the Turner Syndrome Society of the United States were included in the analysis.
