Periodontal diseases are among the most common diseases affecting humans. Dental biofilm is a contributor to the etiology of most periodontal diseases. It is also widely accepted that immunological and inflammatory responses to biofilm components are manifested by signs and symptoms of periodontal disease. The outcome of such interaction is modulated by risk factors (modifiers), either inherent (genetic) or acquired (environmental), significantly affecting the initiation and progression of different periodontal disease phenotypes. While definitive genetic determinants responsible for either susceptibility or resistance to periodontal disease have yet to be identified, many factors affecting the pathogenesis have been described, including smoking, …

Paclitaxel (Taxol)-induced cell death requires the intrinsic cell death pathway, but the specific participants and the precise mechanisms are poorly understood. Previous studies indicate that a BH3-only protein BIM (BCL-2 Interacting Mediator of cell death) plays a role in paclitaxel-induced apoptosis. We show here that BIM is dispensable in apoptosis with paclitaxel treatment using bim−/− MEFs (mouse embryonic fibroblasts), the bim−/− mouse breast tumor model, and shRNA-mediated down-regulation of BIM in human breast cancer cells. Streptococci resident in the oral cavity have been linked to infective endocarditis (IE). While other viridans streptococci are commonly studied in relation to IE, less research has been focused on Streptococcus pneumoniae. We established for the first time an animal model of S. pneumoniae IE, and examined the virulence of the TIGR4 strain in this model. We hypothesized that two-component systems (TCS) may mediate S. pneumoniae TIGR4 strain virulence in IE and examined TCS response regulator (RR) mutants of TIGR4 in vivo with the IE model. Introduction: Current studies have compared indirect bonding with direct placement of orthodontic brackets; many of these have shown that indirect bonding is generally a more accurate technique. However, the reproducibility of an indirect bonding setup by an orthodontist has yet to be described in the literature. Using cone-beam computed tomography and computer-assisted modeling software, we evaluated the consistency of orthodontists in placing orthodontic brackets at different times.

Purpose: Factors contributing to osteonecrosis of the jaw with anti-remodeling drug treatment are unclear. Epidemiologic and experimental studies have suggested the combination of bisphosphonates and dexamethasone results in osteonecrosis of the jaw more often than either agent alone. The goal of this study was to assess the combination of these 2 drugs in a large animal model previously shown to be susceptible to exposed bone in the oral cavity when treated with bisphosphonates. การเกิดฟันเชื่อมติดกันมีโอกาสเกิดขึ้นได้น้อย แต่ฟันเชื่อมติดกันนี้จะมีลักษณะทางกายวิภาคที่ซับซ้อน จึงทําให้เสี่ยงต่อการเกิดโรคปริทันต์อักเสบและเนื้อเยื่อในตายได้ ดังนั้นการตรวจรักษาจึงต้องทําอย่างระมัดระวังรายงานผู้ป่วยนี้นําเสนอแนวทางการรักษาฟันเชื่อมติดกันระหว่างฟันกรามบนแท้ซี่ที่หนึ่งด้านขวากับฟันเกินด้วยวิธีทางศาสตร์คลองรากฟันร่วมกับปริทันตศาสตร์ โดยเมื่อกรอทางเปิดสู่โพรงเนื้อเยื่อในตัวฟันแล้วพบว่าทั้งโพรง เนื้อเยื่อในตัวฟันและคลองรากฟันของฟันกรามบนแท้ซี่ที่หนึ่งด้านขวากับฟันเกินมีการเชื่อมติดกัน ภายหลังจาก การรักษาคลองรากฟันแบบไม่ใช้ศัลยกรรมได้ผนึกร่องบริเวณรากฟันที่เชื่อมติดกันด้วยวัสดุกลาสไอโอโนเมอร์จากการติดตามผลหลังการรักษาเป็นเวลา 1 ปี แสดงให้เห็นถึงการหายของเนื้อเยื่อรอบปลายรากฟันและเนื้อเยื่อเหงือกมีสุขภาพดี (ว ทันต จุฬาฯ 2556;36:49-58)

วัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อเปรียบเทียบแรงเสียดทานสถิตระหว่างลวดและแบร็กเกตเหล็กกล้าไร้สนิมเมื่อมัดลวดด้วย อีลาสโตเมอริกลิเกเจอร์ผลิตจากยางธรรมชาติ พอกไซด์ 4 สูตรที่มีรูปร่างหน้าตัดแตกต่างกัน 3 แบบ วัสดุและวิธีการ นําลวดเหล็กกล้าไร้สนิมที่มีหน้าตัดขนาด 0.016 X 0.022 นิ้วมาเคลื่อนผ่านร่องของแบร็กเกต เหล็กกล้าไร้สนิมชนิดเอดจ์ไวส์มาตรฐานสําหรับฟันกรามน้อยซี่ที่หนึ่งที่มีร่องขนาด 0.018 X 0.025 นิ้ว โดยมัดลวด ด้วยอีลาสโตเมอริกลิเกเจอร์ผลิตจากยางธรรมชาติอีพอกไซด์ 4 สูตร ได้แก่ สูตรที่ไม่มีซิลิกา มีซิลิการ้อยละ 30 มี ซิลิการ้อยละ 45 และมีซิลิการ้อยละ 55 โดยแต่ละสูตรมีรูปร่างหน้าตัดของวงยางแบ่งเป็น 3 แบบ ได้แก่ หน้าตัด วงกลม วงรี และสี่เหลี่ยม บันทึกขนาดแรงเสียดทานสถิตโดยใช้เครื่องมัตสึยูนิเวอร์แซลเทสติ้งมาชื่น แล้วทําการ วิเคราะห์ความแปรปรวนแบบทิศทางเดียวของค่าเฉลี่ยและเปรียบเทียบแบบพหุคูณของค่าเฉลี่ยแรงเสียดทานสถิต ด้วยการวิเคราะห์แทมเฮนที่ระดับความเชื่อมั่น 0.05 ผลการศึกษา เมื่อมัดลวดด้วยอีลาสโตเมอริกลิเกเจอร์ผลิตจากยางธรรมชาติอีพอกไซด์สูตรที่ไม่มีซิลิกาให้ค่าเฉลี่ย แรงเสียดทานสถิตน้อยที่สุด รองลงมาเป็นสูตรที่มีซิลิการ้อยละ 30 ร้อยละ 45 และร้อยละ 55 ตามลําดับ และ สําหรับรูปร่างหน้าตัดของยางพบว่า ยางที่มีรูปร่างหน้าตัดวงกลมให้ค่าเฉลี่ยแรงเสียดทานสถิตน้อยที่สุดตามด้วย หน้าตัดรูปวงรีและสี่เหลี่ยมตามลําดับ โดยทุกกลุ่มมีความแตกต่างกันอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติที่ระดับ 0.05 ยกเว้นระหว่างกลุ่มที่มีรูปร่างหน้าตัดวงกลม และวงรี สรุป แรงเสียดทานสถิตเพิ่มขึ้นอย่างมีนัยสําคัญเมื่อมัดลวดด้วยอีลาสโตเมอริกลิเกเจอร์ผลิตจากยางธรรมชาติอีพอกไซด์ที่มีส่วนผสมของซิลิกาที่เพิ่มขึ้น และรูปร่างหน้าตัดของวงยางมีผลต่อแรงเสียดทานสถิต โดยยางที่มีรูปร่างหน้าตัดสี่เหลี่ยมทําให้เกิดแรงเสียดทานสถิตมากกว่าวงรีและวงกลมอย่างมีนัย แต่ไม่พบความแตกต่างสําคัญอย่างมีนัยสําคัญระหว่างกลุ่มที่มัดลวดด้วยยางรูปร่างหน้าตัดวงรี และวงกลม (ว ทันต จุฬาฯ 2556;36:21-30)

การเปรียบเทียบมิติทางเดินหายใจส่วนบนในผู้ป่วยจัดฟันไทยกลุ่มหนึ่งที่มีโครงสร้างใบหน้าแบบต่างๆ, บัญชา พรสุขศิริ, จินตนา ศิริชุมพันธ์, สุนทรา พันธ์มีเกียรติ

วัตถุประสงค์ หาค่าเฉลี่ยและเปรียบเทียบมิติทางเดินหายใจส่วนบนในผู้ป่วยจัดฟันไทยกลุ่มหนึ่งที่มีโครงสร้าง ใบหน้าแบบต่าง ๆ วัสดุและวิธีการ ภาพรังสีวัดศีรษะด้านข้างของผู้ป่วย ภาควิชาทันตกรรมจัดฟัน คณะทันตแพทยศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์ มหาวิทยาลัย จํานวน 327 ราย ในช่วงอายุระหว่าง 16-40 ปี ถูกแบ่งเป็นสองกลุ่ม กลุ่มที่หนึ่งมีโครงสร้างใบหน้า ในแนวดิ่งแบบสบปกติ 167 ราย แบ่งเป็นสามกลุ่มย่อยคือ โครงสร้างใบหน้าในแนวหน้า-หลังแบบที่หนึ่ง แบบ ที่สอง และแบบที่สาม กลุ่มที่สองมีโครงสร้างใบหน้าในแนวหน้า-หลังแบบที่หนึ่ง 152 ราย แบ่งเป็นสามกลุ่มย่อย คือ โครงสร้างใบหน้าในแนวดิ่งแบบสบลึก สบปกติ และสบเปิด วัดมิติทางเดินหายใจส่วนบนด้วยโปรแกรม อินฟินิทและโปรแกรมอิมเมจทูล เปรียบเทียบค่าเฉลี่ยระหว่างกลุ่มย่อยโดยใช้การวิเคราะห์ความแปรปรวน ทางเดียว ที่ระดับนัยสําคัญ 0.05 ผลการศึกษา ในกลุ่มที่หนึ่ง มิติทางเดินหายใจส่วนบนบริเวณคอหอยหลังช่องปากและคอหอยหลังกล่องเสียงจะมีค่าน้อยลงอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติเมื่อผู้ป่วยมีโครงสร้างใบหน้าแบบที่สาม แบบที่หนึ่ง และแบบที่สอง ตามลําดับ ในกลุ่มที่สอง มิติทางเดินหายใจส่วนบนบริเวณคอหอยหลังโพรงจมูก คอหอยหลังช่องปาก และ คอหอยหลังกล่องเสียง จะมีค่าน้อยลงอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติเมื่อผู้ป่วยมีโครงสร้างใบหน้าแบบสบลึก สบปกติ และสบเปิด ตามลําดับ สรุป ผู้ป่วยจัดฟันไทยที่มีโครงสร้างใบหน้าในแนวดิ่งหรือแนวหน้า-หลังต่างกันจะมีมิติทางเดินหายใจส่วนบนต่างกัน (ว ทันต จุฬาฯ 2556;36:9-20)

ลักษณะโครงสร้างกะโหลกศีรษะแบบที่สามในผู้ป่วยไทยกลุ่มหนึ่ง, ณัฐวัฒน์ ตรีวิโรจน์, ศิริมา เพ็ชรดาชัย, วิจิตรศักดิ์ โซลิตกุล

วัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อศึกษาลักษณะโครงสร้างและรูปแบบความผิดปกติของกะโหลกศีรษะและใบหน้า ในผู้ป่วยไทย ที่มีลักษณะโครงสร้างกะโหลกศีรษะแบบที่สาม และเปรียบเทียบระหว่างเพศ วัสดุและวิธีการ ศึกษาภาพรังสีดิจิตัลกะโหลกศีรษะด้านข้างของผู้ป่วยไทยที่มีลักษณะโครงสร้างกะโหลกศีรษะแบบ ที่สามจํานวน 223 คน (เพศชาย 78 คน และเพศหญิง 145 คน) ตามเกณฑ์ของ แซสซูนี และใช้สถิติที่-เทสต์ และไค-สแควร์ เปรียบเทียบระหว่างเพศ ผลการศึกษา ผู้ป่วยไทยที่มีลักษณะโครงสร้างกะโหลกศีรษะแบบที่สาม โดยส่วนใหญ่มีลักษณะขากรรไกรบนปกติ ร้อยละ 49.78 หรือถอยหลัง ร้อยละ 49.33 ขากรรไกรล่างยื่น ร้อยละ 82.51 มีความสัมพันธ์ในแนวดิ่งแบบสบเปิด ร้อยละ 66.81 และมีฟันหน้าบนยื่น ร้อยละ 58.74 เปรียบเทียบระหว่างเพศชายและเพศหญิง พบว่าเพศชายมี ความยาวฐานกะโหลกศีรษะ ความยาวขากรรไกรล่าง และความสูงใบหน้าด้านหน้าและด้านหลัง มากกว่าเพศ หญิงอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ (ที่ระดับนัยสําคัญ 0.05) สรุป รูปแบบความผิดปกติของโครงสร้างกะโหลกศีรษะแบบที่สามในผู้ป่วยไทยไม่มีความแตกต่างระหว่างเพศ แต่เพศชายมีขนาดกะโหลกศีรษะที่ใหญ่กว่าเพศหญิง (ว ทันต จุฬาฯ 2556;36:1-8)

Fluoride/Zinc/Essential Oil-Containing Mouthrinse Promotes Fluoride Uptake And Microhardness In Enamel In Vitro, Em-On Benjavongkulchai, Suphot Tamsailom

Objective To evaluate the effect of fluoride/zinc/essential oil-containing mouthrinse on fluoride uptake and microhardness in enamel. Materials and methods A double-blind randomized trial was performed. Thirty polished bovine enamel specimens (6 x 6 mm) were subjected to caries-likes lesion formation in the demineralizing solution. Then specimens were analyzed for microhardness (no difference in microhardness; p > 0.05) and divided into 3 groups (n=10/group). The fluoride and calcium contents in enamel were analyzed by fluoride electrode and atomic absorption spectrometer, respectively. วัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อเปรียบเทียบความทนทานของกําลังแรงดึงระดับจุลภาคในการซ่อมแซมเซรามิกที่ผ่านการเตรียมพื้นผิวที่แตกต่างกันด้วยเรซินคอมโพสิต วัสดุและวิธีการ นําบลอคเซรามิกไอพีเอสเอ็มเพรสแคด 8 ชิ้น ตัดให้เป็นรูปร่างทรงสี่เหลี่ยม แบ่งออกเป็น 4 กลุ่ม คือ กลุ่มที่เตรียมผิวด้วยกรดไฮโดรฟลูออริก กลุ่มที่เป่าอะลูมินัมออกไซด์ กลุ่มที่เตรียมผิวด้วยกรดไฮโดรฟลูออริก แล้วทาสารไซเลน และกลุ่มที่เป่าอะลูมินัมออกไซด์แล้วทาสารไซเลน นําตัวอย่างแต่ละกลุ่มมาทาสารยึดติดแล้ว นําเรซินคอมโพสิตมายึดกับด้านที่ผ่านการเตรียมผิวแล้ว จากนั้นแบ่งชิ้นตัวอย่างแต่ละกลุ่มออกเป็น 2 กลุ่ม โดยกลุ่มหนึ่งจําลองการใช้งานด้วยการทําเทอร์มอไซคลิงและไซคลิกโหลดดิ้งและกลุ่มที่ไม่ผ่านการจําลองการใช้งาน รวมได้ชิ้นตัวอย่างทั้งหมด 8 กลุ่ม นําชิ้นงานแต่ละกลุ่มมาตัดให้ได้ชิ้นตัวอย่างขนาดหนา 1 มม. กว้าง 5 มม. สูง 8 มม. กลุ่มละ 10 ชิ้น แล้วนําชิ้นตัวอย่างเข้าเครื่องทดสอบแรงอเนกประสงค์ เพื่อคํานวณกําลังแรงดึงระดับ จุลภาค ประเมินและวิเคราะห์ผลด้วยการวิเคราะห์ความแปรปรวนแบบสามทาง และใช้การวิเคราะห์ความแปรปรวน ทางเดียวโดยใช้สถิติที่ระดับความเชื่อมั่นร้อยละ 95 ผลการศึกษา การจําลองอายุการใช้งานทําให้ค่ากําลังแรงดึงระดับจุลภาคระหว่างเซรามิกและเรซินคอมโพสิตลดลง อย่างมีนัยสําคัญ ส่วนการใช้สารไซเลนและปัจจัยร่วมระหว่างการเตรียมผิวเซรามิกและการใช้สารไซเลนมีผลเพียงเล็กน้อยเท่านั้นต่อกําลังแรงดึงระดับจุลภาคระหว่างเซรามิกและเรซินคอมโพสิต สรุป การจําลองอายุการใช้งานทําให้กําลังแรงดึงระดับจุลภาคของเซรามิกและเรซินคอมโพสิตมีค่าลดลง ส่วนการใช้สารไซเลนและประเภทของการเตรียมผิวเซรามิก (การเตรียมผิวด้วยกรดไฮโดรฟลูออริกและการเตรียมผิวด้วยการเป่าอะลูมินัมออกไซด์) ไม่มีผลต่อกําลังแรงดึงระดับจุลภาคของเซรามิกและเรซินคอมโพสิต (2 ทันต จุฬาฯ 2556;36:37-48)
