A Study Of The Management Of Opioid Prescriptions Among Patients With A History Of Substance Abuse, Kara G. Veeder

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Prescription opioid abuse is the fastest-growing drug problem in the United States and has been declared an epidemic by the U.S. White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. Immediate release (IR) opioids, especially hydrocodone and oxycodone, are abused or misused most commonly. Dentists are only second to family physicians in the number of IR opioid prescriptions written. Just under ten percent of the population in the United States in 2010 were classified with substance dependence or abuse in 2009. This study poses the following questions: 1. Do patients with a personal or family history of substance abuse manage prescription …

Tristetraprolin In Periodontal Homeostasis, Mary K. Gray Jan 2012

Tristetraprolin In Periodontal Homeostasis, Mary K. Gray

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Background: Tristetraprolin (TTP) is a key RNA-binding protein that regulates pro-inflammatory cytokines post-transcriptionally by binding to adenylate-uridylate-rich elements (AREs) within the 3'-untranslated (UTR) region. TTP is encoded by gene zfp-36. During inflammation, the p38 mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway inactivates TTP by phosphorylation to inhibit its ability to shuttle mRNA to cytoplasmic degradation machinery. TTP knockout mice exhibit an inflammatory phenotype of arthritis, myeloid hyperplasia, and cachexia. We hypothesize that TTP directs cytokine expression in inflammatory bone loss during periodontal disease progression. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to determine if depletion of TTP affects alveolar bone loss …

New Statistical Methods For The Analysis Of Periodontal Data, Anthony J. Parker

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Diagnostic (measurement) error is prevalent in medical research 16;22;29;31;37;43;54;69;79;81;89. Clinical studies in periodontology often produce large amounts of data subject to measurement error with potentially complex correlation structures 3;4;14;22;37;89. The periodontal probing depth (PPD) and clinical attachment level (CAL) are measures often used to assess periodontal disease status. PPD and CAL are commonly used as covariates or in the calculation of covariates when investigating outcomes of interest in periodontal studies. Current methods of measuring PPD and CAL are prone to measurement error 22;37;59;89. It has long been recognized that when regressing on independent variables measured with error, the estimate describing …

Characterization Of Pleiotrophin And Receptor Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase Beta/Zeta In Odontoblast And Osteoblast Cell Lines, Amena Tamkenath Jan 2012

Characterization Of Pleiotrophin And Receptor Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase Beta/Zeta In Odontoblast And Osteoblast Cell Lines, Amena Tamkenath

All ETDs from UAB

Pleiotrophin (PTN) is an extracellular matrix-associated growth factor and chemokine expressed in mesodermal and ectodermal cells. It plays an important role in osteoblast recruitment and differentiation. PTN has two well-known physiological receptors, protein tyrosine phosphatase beta/zeta (RPTPRZ1), and N-syndecan. Protein tyrosine phosphatases are a group of enzymes that remove phosphate groups from phosphorylated tyrosine residues on proteins. Protein tyrosine phosphorylation is a common post-translation modification that can create novel recognition motifs for protein interactions and cellular localization, affect protein stability and regulate enzyme activity. Osteoblasts have recently been found to express the short transmembrane isoform of RPTP beta/zeta but nothing …

A Histologic And Radiologic Analysis Of Bone Formation Under The Elevated Maxillary Sinus Using Venous Coagulum As The Sole Filling Material, Kathleen Ann Beaudry Jan 2012

A Histologic And Radiologic Analysis Of Bone Formation Under The Elevated Maxillary Sinus Using Venous Coagulum As The Sole Filling Material, Kathleen Ann Beaudry

All ETDs from UAB

Insufficient bone height is a common obstacle to placing dental implants in the posterior maxilla. Sinus lift procedures using various grafting materials have been shown to be a highly predictable way to increase bone height in the posterior maxilla (Jensen 1998). Given the wide range of materials that have proven successful in augmenting the sinus, the argument could be made that the presence of graft is not critical. Instead, the creation and maintenance of space, provided by two implants, along with the osteoinductive properties of the membrane, the periosteum, and growth factors provided by a blood clot are the only …

In Vitro Antimicrobial Effect Of A Cold Plasma Jet Against Enterococcus Faecalis Biofilms, Chunqi Jiang, Christoph Schaudinn, David E. Jaramillo, Paul Webster, J. William Costerton Jan 2012

In Vitro Antimicrobial Effect Of A Cold Plasma Jet Against Enterococcus Faecalis Biofilms, Chunqi Jiang, Christoph Schaudinn, David E. Jaramillo, Paul Webster, J. William Costerton

Bioelectrics Publications

The hypothesis that a cold plasma jet has the antimicrobial effect against Enterococcus faecalis biofilms was tested in vitro. 27 hydroxyapatite discs were incubated with E. faecalis for six days to form a monoculture biofilm on the disc surface. The prepared substrata were divided into three groups: the negative control, the positive control (5.25% NaOCl solution), and the plasma treatment group. Resultant colony-forming unit counts were associated with observations of bacterial cell morphology changes using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Treatment of E. faecalis biofilm with the plasma and 5.25% NaOCl for 5min resulted in 93.1% and 90.0% kill (P < 0.0001), respectively. SEM detected that nearly no intact bacteria were discernible for the plasmaexposed HA disc surfaces. The demonstrated bactericidal effect of the plasma with direct surface contact may be due to the enhanced oxidation by the locally produced reactive plasma species.

Oral Health Knowledge, Attitudes, And Behaviors: Investigation Of An Educational Intervention Strategy With At-Risk Females, Susan Romano Rustvold

Dissertations and Theses

A self-perpetuating cycle of poor health literacy and poor oral health knowledge and behavior affects approximately 90 million people in the United States, most especially those from low-income groups and other at-risk populations such as those with addiction. Poor oral health can result from lack of access to regular preventive dental appointments, lack of access to restorative care when dental diseases are treatable, and low oral health knowledge that leads to poor oral health self-care behaviors. In addition, patients' dental anxiety can impede care, because highly anxious people often avoid dental appointments. To address these issues, this inquiry examined oral …
