OBJECTIVE: To compare microaesthetics in pre- and post-orthodontic cases, treated with non-extraction and extraction treatment and assessed whether the achieved microaesthetic parameters are comparable to the proposed norms.

STUDY DESIGN: Quasi-experimental study.

PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY: Orthodontic Clinic, the Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, from January 2005 to December 2009.

METHODOLOGY: Orthodontic records of 31 cases treated with non-extraction therapy and 26 cases treated with extraction of upper first premolars were selected. The purpose of this study was to compare the shear bond strengths (SBSs) of orthodontic brackets bonded with self-etching primer (SEP) using different enamel surface preparations. A two-by-two factorial study design was used. Sixty human premolars were harvested, cleaned, and randomly assigned to four groups (n = 15 per group). Teeth were bathed in saliva for 48 hours to form a pellicle. Treatments were assigned as follows: group 1 was pumiced for 10 seconds and pre-etched for 5 seconds with 37 per cent phosphoric acid before bonding with SEP (Transbond Plus). The available passive mode of periodontal infections in mice requires high efficiency of bacterial attachment and invasiveness and is not always suitable to test the pathogenicity of genetically engineered mutant strains. We developed an active mode of oral infection, using microinjection in the marginal gingiva of mice, to test the pathogenicity of a genetically engineered Treponema denticola mutant strain deficient in intermediate-like filaments, compared to the wild-type strain. Over the last twenty-seven years, the evaluation of practice man- agement in dental schools has been documented by three studies. In twenty-seven years the teaching of practice management has been influenced by changes in the definition of practice manage- ment, resources available to dental schools, technology, changes in accreditation standards and, more recently, the influence of corpora- tions marketing to dental students. This study examined the cytotoxic effects of STERIPLEX™ HC (sBioMed, Orem, UT) and sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) on human fibroblast cells in vitro. Fibroblasts exposed to various concentrations of NaOCl or STERIPLEX™ HC were visualized via light microscopy. Dilutions of either NaOCl or STERIPLEX™ HC that did not appear to disrupt the integrity of the cells were recorded for further analysis. Cells were then cultured and grown to confluence in five separate plates. A void was created down the middle of each plate. If the cells were viable, cellular confluence was seen. If nonviable, confluence of the cells did not occur. …

The Antimicrobial Effect Of Steriplex Hc In Comparison With Sodium Hypochlorite On Enterococcus Faecalis, Jonathan Coudron

The study objective was to compare the antimicrobial activity of STERIPLEX™ HC with 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) at different dilutions (50%, 25%, 10%, 1%, 0.1%) and different time intervals (1, 3, 5 minutes) on Enterococcus faecalis. All data was analyzed using an ANOVA. The 50%, 25%, and 10% dilutions of both disinfectants reduced the colony forming unit (CFU) count to below the limit of detection (50 CFU/ml) after one minute. The 1% dilutions at each of the time intervals show NaOCl was significantly more effective than STERIPLEX™ HC (all Ps < .0001) in reducing the CFU/ml count. The 0.1% dilutions of NaOCl and STERIPLEX™ HC at 1 minute, were not different (P = 0.7808), while at 3 minutes and 5 minutes NaOCl was significantly more effective (P = 0.0098 and P < .0001, respectively).

Objectives

A 33-year-old woman presented with a slow growing palatal gingival mass. The clinical differential diagnosis included benign tumors and tumor-like lesions, including the pyogenic granuloma, peripheral giant cell granuloma, peripheral ossifying fibroma, giant cell fibroma, peripheral odontogenic tumors, and oral focal mucinosis.

Study design

The lesion was excised and histopathological examination followed by immunohistochemical staining was carried out.

Results

The microscopic findings and the immunohistochemical reactivity was diagnostic for a nerve sheath myxoma.

Following curricular revisions at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry, this longitudinal study was designed to determine students' perceptions of their educational experience in the revised curriculum. A SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) open-ended response questionnaire was administered to students in the class of 2011 (N=89) in January of each academic year, 2008 through 2011, followed by focus groups three months prior to graduation. The overall response rate for the questionnaire was 69 percent, and a total of fourteen students participated in four focus groups. Streptococcus sanguinis is one of the most common agents of infective endocarditis. Spx proteins are a group of global regulators that negatively or positively control global transcription initiation. In this study, we characterized the spxA1 gene in S. sanguinis SK36. The spxA1 null mutant displayed opaque colony morphology, reduced hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production, and reduced antagonistic activity against Streptococcus mutans UA159 relative to the wild type strain. The ΔspxA1 mutant also demonstrated decreased tolerance to high temperature, acidic and oxidative stresses. This study aimed to better understand how and why people choose dental school faculty members as their oral health care providers. Increasing financial constraints in U.S. dental schools have led their administrators to seek alternative funding sources, one of which can be revenues from dental school faculty practice. To effectively promote faculty practice, it is necessary to understand how and why one chooses a dental school faculty member as his or her oral health care provider. Objective The purpose of this article was to demonstrate the preliminary report of bonding ability of porcelain laminate veneers to fluorosed teeth after 1 year. Materials and methods The clinical findings on this patient were dental fluorosis of Thylstrup- Fejerskov Index (TFI) = 5-7. The treatment plan was to place 16 PLVs. Study models showed that the teeth were in good proportion. Wax-up models were used for silicone index. The incisal edge reductions were a feather incisal edge in maxillary teeth and an incisal bevel preparation in mandibular teeth. Objective This study investigated patterns of tooth deformation in response to immersion in hot and cold water, and attempted to correlate the measured dimensional change with calculated values based on coefficients of thermal expansion. Materials and methods The extent of cuspal deformation and strains within dentine were assessed in extracted human molars, in response to immersion in hot and cold water. Objective The purpose of this study was to investigate factors associated with turnover intention of Thai dentists. Materials and methods A mailed survey was conducted on a systematic random sample of 2,723 Thai dentists, 733 of which returned completed questionnaires. Turnover intention was assessed by dentistsû intenion to change job or have a career break within 5 years. Demographic, economic, practice characteristic and psychosocial work environment factors were used to build three logistic models for the public and private sectors, as well as for the overall sample. วัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อสํารวจความชุกของอาการของเท็มโพโรแมนดิบิวลาร์ดิสออเดอร์ (ทีเอ็มดี) ในกลุ่มนักดําน้ํา สกูบาไทย และหาปัจจัยเกี่ยวข้องที่สัมพันธ์กับการเกิดอาการเหล่านั้นหลังดําน้ํา วัสดุและวิธีการ กลุ่มตัวอย่างเป็นนักดําน้ําไทยที่ได้จากการคัดเลือกแบบเจาะจง 280 ราย โดยให้ตอบ แบบสอบถามที่เกี่ยวกับอาการที่เอ็มดีทั้งในชีวิตประจําวันก่อนดําน้ํา ขณะดําน้ํา และหลังดําน้ํา รวมถึงคําถาม เกี่ยวกับปัจจัยต่าง ๆ ที่อาจสัมพันธ์กับการเกิดอาการที่เอ็มดี วิเคราะห์ข้อมูลโดยใช้สถิติเชิงพรรณาและการ วิเคราะห์ถดถอยพหุแบบลอจิสติก ผลการศึกษา ความชุกของอาการที่เอ็มดี (อย่างน้อย 2 อย่างขึ้นไป) หลังดําน้ําคิดเป็นร้อยละ 22.9 โดย อาการเมื่อยขากรรไกรพบได้มากที่สุด (ร้อยละ 26.4) รองลงมา คือ ปวดข้อต่อขากรรไกร (ร้อยละ 21.8) และ ปวดกล้ามเนื้อขากรรไกร (ร้อยละ 15.0) แต่มีเพียงร้อยละ 1.9 ที่รายงานว่า อาการผิดปกตินี้รุนแรงถึงกับต้องหยุด ดําน้ํา ในขณะที่ร้อยละ 96.3 อาการผิดปกติค่อย ๆ ดีขึ้นเองโดยไม่ต้องรับการรักษา ปัจจัยที่สัมพันธ์กับการเกิด อาการหลังดําน้ําอย่างมีนัยสําคัญ (p < 0.05) ได้แก่ การมีชีวิตที่เคร่งเครียด (OR-2.27; 95% CI: 1.10-4.69) และมีอาการที่เอ็มดีอย่างน้อย 1 อย่างก่อนการดําน้ํา (OR-4.06, 95% CI: 2.13-7.76) ส่วนอายุ การนอนกัดฟัน การกัดเน้นฟัน ประวัติการจัดฟัน ผ่าฟันคุด การบาดเจ็บที่ขากรรไกร-ใบหน้า และความกังวลในขณะดําน้ํา ไม่มี ความสัมพันธ์อย่างมีนัยสําคัญกับการรายงานอาการที่เอ็มดีหลังดําน้ํา สรุป อาการที่เอ็มดีหลังดําน้ําพบได้ในกลุ่มนักดําน้ําไทย แต่อาการที่เกิดขึ้นมักไม่รุนแรงและหายได้เอง ปัจจัยที่ สําคัญในการเกิดอาการผิดปกติเหล่านั้น คือ มีชีวิตที่เคร่งเครียด และปรากฏอาการที่เอ็มดีอย่างน้อยหนึ่งอาการก่อนการดำนํ้า (ว ทันต จุฬาฯ 2555;35:15-26)
