The State Of The Art In Evaluating The Performance Of Department Chairs And Division Heads., David G. Dunning, Timothy M. Durham, Mert N. Aksu, Brian M. Lange

This study explores the little understood process of evaluating the performance of department chairs/division heads in dental schools. Specifically, this research aimed to elucidate the methods, processes, and outcomes related to the job performance of department chairs/division heads. Forty-three deans and 306 chairs completed surveys with both close-ended and open-ended questions. In addition, ten deans and ten chairs were interviewed. Results indicate that 80 to 90 percent of department chairs are formally evaluated, although as many as 50 percent may lack job descriptions. PURPOSE: The purpose of this literature review is to document the contributions dental hygienists have made over the past 3 decades to improve the nation's oral health. This historical review encompasses selected literature that acknowledged dental Hygienists' direct involvement in U.S. school-based or school-linked oral health programs from 1970-1999.

METHODS: Five researchers independently searched MEDLINE, PubMed, and other electronic databases to identify relevant literature for the years 1970-1999. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to measure the utility of various predictors used by the Old Dominion University Gene W. Hirschfeld School of Dental Hygiene baccalaureate degree dental hygiene program in selecting dental hygiene students who are most likely to graduate and be successful in passing the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination (NBDHE). The following factors were examined: grade point average (GPA); science GPA; final grade in various prerequisite courses; final grade in first-year dental hygiene courses; academic setting where prerequisite courses were completed; multiple attempts to achieve a passing course grade; and admissions criteria points (ACP).

This study determined if vital tooth whitening affects oral health-related quality of life (OHRQOL) in adults ≥50-years old, and if tooth whitening promotes individuals to seek regular professional dental care and participation in social activities. Using a two-group, single blind, randomized, pre-test-post-test design, 62 participants were enrolled. The experimental group used a whitening product twice daily for three weeks, while the control group used no whitening products. Tooth color satisfaction was assessed using the Tooth Color Satisfaction Scale and was correlated with overall oral health-related quality of life. Non-equilibrium atmospheric pressure plasma, also known as cold plasma, is a state of matter that consists of a mix of neutral and charged particles. Plasma generates chemically reactive species and ultraviolet radiation making them useful in decontamination applications (Kong & Laroussi, 2003). Research regarding the inactivation of gram-positive bacteria, such as Bacillus atrophaeus, by cold plasma has been studied by Laroussi et al. (2003); however, there is limited research regarding the germicidal effectiveness of cold plasma on the microorganisms Geobacillus stearothermophilus and Bacillus cereus. This study was conducted to determine the effects of five different finger rest positions, (fulcrums: opposite arch, standard intra-oral, basic extra-oral, cross arch and finger on finger) on the muscle activity of four forearm muscles, (extensor carpi radialis longus, flexor carpi ulnar is, biceps brachii and pronator teres) during a simulated periodontal scaling experience. A convenience sample of 32 consenting right handed senior dental hygiene students who met inclusion criteria participated. The primary purpose of this study was to determine if tooth whitening product use influences oral health interests and values in an adult population. A two-group, randomized, pre-test, multiple post-test design was used for studying 60 adults between the ages of 18 and 60. Persons who use tobacco products, have composite/tooth-colored anterior restorations, less than eight anterior teeth, pregnant or lactating women, or those who have previously used a whitening product other than toothpaste were excluded from the study. OBJECTIVE: To characterize PubMed usage over a typical day and compare it to previous studies of user behavior on Web search engines. DESIGN: We performed a lexical and semantic analysis of 2,689,166 queries issued on PubMed over 24 consecutive hours on a typical day. MEASUREMENTS: We measured the number of queries, number of distinct users, queries per user, terms per query, common terms, Boolean operator use, common phrases, result set size, MeSH categories, used semantic measurements to group queries into sessions, and studied the addition and removal of terms from consecutive queries to gauge search strategies. The purpose of this study was to determine the number of Latino dentists in California, identify the schools and countries where they were educated, and compare Latino dentist demographics with that of the state’s new demographics. From the 2000 California Department of Consumer Affairs list of 25,273 dentists, we identified Latino U.S. dental graduates (USDGs) by “heavily Hispanic” surnames and Latino international dental graduates (IDGs) by country and school of graduation. From the 2000 U.S. census Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS), we described Latino dentist characteristics such as Spanish language capacity and practice location. An interactive, multimedia, virtual patient module was designed and developed on compact disc (CD-ROM) to address the need for student dentists to increase their competence and decrease their perception of difficulty in caring for children with developmental disabilities. A development team consisting of pediatric dentistry faculty members, parents of children with developmental disabilities, an individual with a developmental disability, and educational specialists developed an interactive virtual patient case. The case involved a ten-year-old child with Down syndrome presenting with a painful tooth. บทความนี้เป็นรายงานผู้ป่วยหนึ่งรายที่มีถุงน้ําเดนเจอรัส เกิดร่วมกับฟันตัดซี่ข้างบนซ้ายและฟันเขี้ยว บนซ้าย ผู้ป่วยรายนี้เป็นเด็กชายไทย อายุ 8 ปี ซึ่งมีอาการบวมตึงที่กระดูกขากรรไกรบนด้านซ้าย บริเวณกระดูก เบ้าฟันตั้งแต่ฟันตัดกลางบนซ้ายจนถึงฟันกรามน้อยซี่ที่หนึ่งบนซ้าย และได้รับการรักษาโดยถอนฟันน้ํานมที่เป็นฟันตัดขี่ข้างบนซ้าย ฟันน้ํานมที่เป็นฟันเขี้ยวบนซ้าย และผ่าตัดควักถุงน้ําออกทั้งหมดพร้อมกับถอนฟันตัด ข้างบนซ้าย ซึ่งลอยอยู่ในถุงน้ําและฟันเขี้ยวบนซ้ายซึ่งยึดติดกับผนังของถุงน้ํา ไม่พบการกลับเป็นซ้ําของถุงน้ํา หลังติดตามผลเป็นเวลา 1 ปี เมื่อตรวจทางภาพรังสี ถุงน้ําเดนเจอรัสในผู้ป่วยรายนี้ น่าจะมีสาเหตุจากการกระจาย การติดเชื้อเรื้อรังของฟันน้ํานม การรักษาการติดเชื้อของฟันน้ํานมด้วยการรักษาโพรงประสาทฟัน หรือการถอนฟันจะสามารถควบคุมมิให้เกิดถุงน้ําของฟันแท้ที่อยู่ใต้ฟันน้ํานมนั้นได้ (ว ทันต จุฬาฯ 2550;30:43-50)
