Tongue Lesions: Prevalence And Association With Gender, Age And Health-Affected Behaviors, Aree Jainkittivong, Vilaiwan Aneksuk, Robert P. Langlais

Objective The aims of this study were to assess the prevalence of tongue lesions and to relate their occurrence to gender, age and health-affected behaviors in a group of Thai dental patients. Materials and methods One thousand and six hundred Thai dental patients, dividing into three age groups were clinically examined for tongue lesions. Information regarding smoking and drinking habits was collected from the interview. Results Among the 1600 subjects, 83.3% had at least one tongue lesion, with a prevalence of 87% for men and 80.9% for women (P = .002). The three most common tongue lesions were coated tongue …

วัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อเปรียบเทียบปริมาณและคุณภาพงานของนิสิตปี 6 ในการปฏิบัติงานทันตกรรมสําหรับเด็ก คณะทันตแพทยศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย หลังการปรับเปลี่ยนระบบการเรียนการสอนและประเมินผล 1 ปี และ 15 ปี วัสดุและวิธีการ ศึกษาข้อมูลจากใบบันทึกการปฏิบัติงาน ของนิสิตทันตแพทย์ปี 6 ปีการศึกษา 2529 และ 2544 จํานวน 62 คู่ ที่มีเกรดเฉลี่ยสะสมใกล้เคียงกัน บันทึกข้อมูลในแบบบันทึก วิเคราะห์ เปรียบเทียบปริมาณและ คุณภาพงานโดยรวม แยกตามชนิดงานและปีการศึกษาว่ามีความแตกต่างกันหรือไม่ โดยใช้สถิติวิเคราะห์ มันน์วิตนียูและแบบทดสอบค่าทีที่ระดับนัยสําคัญ .05 ผลการศึกษา ปริมาณงานเฉลี่ยของนิสิตปี 6 ปีการศึกษา 2529 เท่ากับ 128.83 เครดิต ในขณะที่ปีการศึกษา 2544 เท่ากับ 144.44 เครดิต พบความแตกต่างอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติระหว่างทั้งสองกลุ่ม (p <.05) โดยคะแนน คุณภาพเฉลี่ยปีการศึกษา 2529 เท่ากับ 84.63 และปีการศึกษา 2544 เท่ากับ 81.35 พบว่ามีความแตกต่างอย่าง มีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ (p <.05) สรุป หลังจากใช้การประเมินระบบใหม่เป็นเวลา 15 ปี ปริมาณงานของนิสิตปีที่ 6 เพิ่มขึ้น ขณะที่คะแนนคุณภาพ ลดลง แต่ยังจัดอยู่ในระดับคุณภาพเดียวกัน ทั้งนี้อาจเนื่องจากวิธีการให้คะแนนคุณภาพที่ปรับเปลี่ยนไป (ว ทันต จุฬาฯ 2550;30:303-12)

วัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อประเมินความพึงพอใจต่อระบบการตรวจ และส่งต่อผู้ป่วยนอก ณ จุดเดียวในผู้ป่วย อาจารย์ นิสิต และเจ้าหน้าที่ที่เกี่ยวข้องของคณะทันตแพทยศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย วัสดุและวิธีการ ให้อาจารย์ นิสิตชั้นปีที่ 5 และ 6 เจ้าหน้าที่ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับระบบการตรวจและส่งต่อผู้ป่วยนอก ทั้งหมด รวมถึงผู้ป่วยที่ต้องการรับการรักษากับนิสิตทันตแพทย์จํานวน 393 คนตอบแบบสอบถามปลายเปิด และ ปลายปิด รวมทั้งสัมภาษณ์ผู้ป่วย 50 คนโดยใช้แบบสอบถามสําหรับผู้ป่วยชุดเดียวกัน ในช่วงระหว่างเดือน ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2548 ถึง เดือนกุมภาพันธ์ พ.ศ. 2549 ผลการศึกษา พบว่าผู้ป่วยส่วนใหญ่จะแนะนําผู้อื่นมารักษากับทางคณะฯ (ร้อยละ 97) โดยส่วนใหญ่พอใจ ที่ได้รับการตรวจหลายครั้งจากอาจารย์ผู้เชี่ยวชาญในแต่ละสาขา (ร้อยละ 93) และพอใจกับการได้รับการถ่ายภาพ รังสีพานอรามิกโดยไม่เสียค่าใช้จ่าย (ร้อยละ 94) สําหรับนิสิตคิดว่าระบบการตรวจ และส่งต่อผู้ป่วยนอก ณ จุดเดียวดีกว่าระบบเดิม (ร้อยละ 59) อย่างไรก็ตามส่วนใหญ่เกิดความสับสนกับข้อสรุปของอาจารย์ผู้ควบคุม จากภาควิชาต่าง ๆ ในการวางแผนการรักษา (ร้อยละ 64.5) ส่วนอาจารย์ และเจ้าหน้าที่ที่เกี่ยวข้องส่วนใหญ่ พึงพอใจในระบบเดิม โดยพบว่าการรับภาระที่หนักขึ้นและบรรยากาศในการทํางานของอาจารย์ที่เกี่ยวข้อง มีความสัมพันธ์กับความเครียดที่สูงขึ้น อาจารย์ส่วนใหญ่ (ร้อยละ 57) ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับระบบโดยตรงเห็นว่า ควรมีการปรับปรุงระบบการตรวจและส่งต่อผู้ป่วยนอก ณ จุดเดียว สรุป ภายใต้ข้อจํากัดของงานวิจัย ผู้ป่วยและนิสิตส่วนใหญ่พอใจกับระบบการตรวจ และส่งต่อผู้ป่วยนอก ณ จุดเดียว แต่อาจารย์และเจ้าหน้าที่ที่เกี่ยวข้องพอใจกับระบบเดิม (2 ทันต จุฬาฯ 2550;30:313-24)

The purpose of this study was to use cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) to quantitatively evaluate and compare skeletal expansion and alveolar tipping of the maxilla at the maxillary canine (Cl), first premolar (PI), second premolar (P2) and first molar (Ml) after rapid maxillary expansion (RME). Transverse effects to the maxillary suture, nasal width and maxillary sinus were also assessed. Introduction: The purpose of this study was to compare the percentage degree of cure (%DC) of orthodontic adhesive resins irradiated with 3 types of light sources of various intensities: plasma arc, halogen, and light-emitting diode (LED). Methods: Twenty maxillary incisor stainless steel brackets (0.018-in slot) were divided into 4 groups of 5 brackets each. A standardized amount of composite resin was applied to each bracket base, simulating its clinical application. Root fractures involve damage to pulp, cementum, dentin, and periodontal ligaments. These injuries affect 0.5% to 7% of permanent teeth. Cervical root fractures are less frequently seen and have a worse prognosis compared with the fractures in the apical or middle third of the root. This case report describes the treatment of a cervical root fracture in a maxillary central incisor. After removal of the coronal fragment, the root was filled temporarily with calcium hydroxide and orthodontic extrusion was initiated. Detection Of Simulated Apical Root Resorption Using Three Cone Beam Ct Machines, Marcus Paulson

The purpose of this study was to determine orthodontists' ability to discriminate small differences of simulated apical root resorption (SARR) on extracted teeth, using the output from three cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) machines. Twenty-four unrestored maxillary anterior teeth exhibiting normal morphology, were collected. The teeth were scanned by three CBCT machines: 1) the NewTom 3G (AFP imaging, USA), 2) the iCAT (Imaging Sciences, USA) 3) and the MicroCAT II (Siemens Medical, USA). The purpose of this investigation was to determine the antimicrobial effect of Biopure MTAD (a mixture of a tetracycline isomer, an acid, and a detergent) as a final irrigant on eight strains of Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) in contaminated root canals of extracted human teeth. In addition, the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Lethal Concentration (MLC) of MTAD were also measured on the same strains of bacteria. Two-hundred and forty extracted human teeth were instrumented using 1.3% NaOCl followed by 17% EDTA to remove the smear layer. The teeth were randomly contaminated with one of eight strains of E. …

A retrospective study was carried out on the dental trauma records of 93 patients (55 boys, 38 girls) with 129 crown-fractured teeth. The patients’ average age was 9.57 years (SD 1.57), ranging between 7 and 15 years. Uncomplicated crown facture (comprising enamel–dentin) was the most observed type of injury (n = 107, 83%). Only 15 patients (16.13%) sought treatment in less than 24 h following the injury. Of 41 injured teeth (31.79%) the apices were open at the time of presentation at the clinic. Dentistry is undergoing a subtle shift away from being a profession to becoming a business. The two cultures of professionalism and business are contrasted. Among the forces driving this change are the emphasis on esthetics in dentistry and the increasing inability of a large class of patients to access dentistry on a business basis. The shift toward dentistry as a business entails the unhealthy transition toward regarding patients as means to satisfy the dentist's ends rather than patients' health being an end in itself. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a ubiquitous human herpesvirus associated with many malignant and nonmalignant human diseases. Life-long latent EBV persistence occurs in blood-borne B lymphocytes, while EBV intermittently productively replicates in mucosal epithelia. Although several models have previously been proposed, the mechanism of EBV transition between these two reservoirs of infection has not been determined. In this study, we present the first evidence demonstrating that EBV latently infects a unique subset of blood-borne mononuclear cells that are direct precursors to Langerhans cells and that EBV both latently and productively infects oral epithelium-resident cells that are likely Langerhans cells. Objective: To evaluate and compare the shear bond strengths of two adhesives using two types of brackets: a conventional and a self-ligating bracket system.

Materials and Methods: Sixty extracted human premolars were collected. The premolars were randomly divided into three groups of 20 teeth. All three groups were direct bonded. Groups 1 and 2 used light-cured adhesive and primer (Transbond XT) with a conventional (Orthos) and a self-ligating bracket (Damon 2), respectively. Individual Scholarship

Knowledge of a little known New York State regulation and its insurance implications can be used to provide dental benefits to people who have congenital diseases or anomalies. An explanation of the regulation is provided, and some of the more common congenital diseases that may affect the dentition, such as amelogenesis imperfecta, dentinogenesis imperfecta, ectodermal dysplasia, cleft lip/palate and trisomy 21, are reviewed.

PURPOSE: To compare salivary characteristics in 3 and 4 year-old Head Start children with and without visible caries.

METHODS: This case-control study was performed on 84 healthy 3 and 4 year-old Head Start children. After consent and inclusion criteria were met, each child was screened and assigned to one of two test groups based on their caries status. Group 1 consisted of children with no visible evidence of caries, although non-visible caries may have been present. Comparison Of Laser And Phosphoric Acid Etching On Sealant Shear Bond Strength, Seth David Latimer

PURPOSE: To compare the effect of traditional phosphoric acid etching with Er,Cr:YSGG laser enamel etching on the shear bond strength of sealant material.

METHODS: Extracted healthy third molars were mounted in acrylic exposing the flattest surface available. Three groups of twenty teeth were used to evaluate traditional acid etching with 37% phosphoric acid as a control group as well as two different laser settings. The sealant material was attached using specialized jigs and then subjected to shear bond strength testing utilizing the ultradent method (MTS machine). Statistical methods employed were the Kruskal-Wallis rank test and the Mann-Whitney U test.

PURPOSE: To compare the ability of newer adhesive resin cements and traditional glass ionomer cements to prevent microleakage under stainless steel crowns on extracted permanent third molars.

METHODS: All teeth were hand prepared and stainless steel crowns were cemented according to manufacturers' instructions. The specimens were thermocycled for 500 cycles and immersed in 2% methylene blue dye solution for 8 hours. Each tooth was imbedded in resin and cut into I mm thick sections by a slow speed diamond saw. The amount of microleakage was measured in microns under a traveling microscope. Background.

Myopericytoma is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm of pericytic cells demonstrating myoid differentiation. The lesion typically arises within the subcutaneous tissue of the extremities. We report a case that, to the best of our knowledge, is the first case of myopericytoma involving the soft tissue of the oral cavity.

Methods.

A 36-year-old woman had a 5-mm sessile, whitish-pink, firm tongue nodule. The patient underwent excisional biopsy, and histopathologic examination as well as immunohistochemical analysis were performed.

Results.

The differential diagnosis by histologic analysis included solitary fibrous tumor, myofibroma, glomus tumor, and myopericytoma. The results of immunohistochemical analysis, when combined with …
