Increasing Utilization Of Motivational Interviewing To Promote Pediatric Oral Health, Ulyses Reamico
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Prevalence of early childhood caries (ECC) remains high even in developed countries such as the United States. An interprofessional education (IPE) project between University of San Francisco (USF) School of Nursing and Health Professions and the University of the Pacific (UoP), Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry was initiated four years ago to enhance nurse practitioner (NP) and dental students’ pediatric oral-systemic health assessment and health promotion communication skills. Since then, USF NP students received pediatric oral health assessment training and spent clinical rotations at UoP to provide pediatric oral care alongside dental students. This doctor of nursing (DNP) project …

Salivary Screening For Selenomonas Noxia In The Oral Cavity Of Pediatric Patients, Rachelle Davidowitz, Katherine M. Howard, Karl Kingsley
Salivary Screening For Selenomonas Noxia In The Oral Cavity Of Pediatric Patients, Rachelle Davidowitz, Katherine M. Howard, Karl Kingsley
School of Medicine Faculty Research
The oral microbiome may be affected by patient medications, disease conditions and systemic disorders. Selenomonas noxia is an anaerobic, motile, non spore-forming, gram-negative rod that has been repeatedly associated with periodontal disease and other disorders, including obesity. Based upon the paucity of evidence regarding oral prevalence, the objective of was to evaluate S. noxia prevalence by sampling saliva from the oral cavity to screen for this pathogen. Using an existing saliva repository, DNA was isolated and screened using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Demographic analysis of study samples and qPCR results was also performed. Approximately half of the samples …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare clinical success of a novel material (silver diamine fluoride incorporated with high-viscosity glass ionomer cement (SDF-GIC)) in Class II restoration in primary molars using atraumatic restorative treatment (ART) technique at 6- and 12- month follow-up. Materials and Methods: A randomized controlled clinical trial using a parallel group design was carried out on 150 children aged 3-8 years old, from 5 public school in Samut Sakhon province, Thailand, with at least one class II cavities. They were randomly allocated to two treatment groups: ART restoration using either GIC (Fuji IX GP) or …

Barriers to good oral health care pose a significant health threat to low-income individuals and families, which in extreme cases can result in fatal consequences. Lack of good oral health may also negatively impact social function and interaction, limiting verbal and nonverbal communication, and interfering with intimacy, nutrition, and sleep. Often ignored, oral care is the most prevalent unmet health care need among children and adolescents, and tooth decay is the most chronic illness in school-age children. Within this already vulnerable group, children with special health care needs (CSHCN) are especially at risk for a variety of economic, social, environmental, …
