Spectroscopic data have been obtained demonstrating that N-heterocyclic carbenes are effective catalysts for linking shorter peptides to form longer ones, a reaction known as “native chemical ligation” (NCL). This reaction is key to the preparation of GLP-1 agonists, such as Zepbound®, Ozempic®, and Wegovy®, which are currently undergoing an explosion in popularity due to their treatment of diabetes, obesity, and cardiac issues. To assess which catalysts are faster, the kinetics model developed by Raines et al., involving the reaction of N-acetylphenylalanine p-nitrophenylthioester and L-cysteine, is being utilized. Hailey-Hailey disease (HHD) is an uncommon autosomal dominant disorder resulting from a mutation in the ATP2C1 gene resulting in dysfunction of the Golgi apparatus calcium-associated ATPase, thus interfering with intercellular calcium signaling.
HHD presents clinically as flaccid blisters and erosions in intertriginous areas, especially the axillae and groin.
The major histologic finding is acantholysis throughout the spinous layer of the epidermis, commonly referred to as a “dilapidated brick wall” appearance.
The initial lesions and associated symptoms usually develop during the second or third decade of life.

The World Health Organization has described the rise of antibiotic use as a “global heath security emergency” (who.int). With the growing concern about antibiotic resistant bacteria, there has been an increased interest in bacteriophages. Bacteriophages are high-specific viruses that only infect bacteria. The use of bacteriophages medicinally to treat bacteria is called phage therapy. Research in phage therapy gained momentum until the introduction of antibiotics. While the USA and other Western countries accepted antibiotics, the Soviet Union and their satellite nations still continued to research phages.
