BACKGROUND: Genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) is a highly prevalent, underdiagnosed condition that can significantly impair quality of life (QoL). This study evaluates real-world treatment trends for GSM to better understand current management practices and highlight ongoing gaps in care. The background is in a different font than the rest of the abstract.
METHODS: We queried the TriNetX database for patients with a diagnosis of postmenopausal atrophic vaginitis (ICD N95.2) and treatment information from 2004-2024. A combination of RxNorm and International Classification of Diseases-10 (ICD) codes was used to classify disease and treatment type, including topical estrogen (RxNorm 4083, 4099), …

Because diabetes mellitus (DM) poses harm to the reproductive systems of humans and mice on both the cellular and histological levels, we sought to understand the effects of streptozotocin-induced (STZ) diabetes mellitus on the spermatogenesis and Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) production of mice. The structural integrity of the testes is disrupted due to the high levels of oxidative stress caused by DM, which also hinders spermatogenesis. Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) have been found to induce autophagy in Sertoli cells, and the Sertoli cells of diabetic models have fewer tight junctions between them. This disorganization and decreased integrity of the seminiferous …

Objective This study examined the association between obesity severity and cardiometabolic and renal disease, using BMI as a surrogate for obesity severity. Methods This is a cross-sectional study using data from the United States Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), 2011–2023. Survey-weighted logistic regression estimated odds ratios (OR) for the diagnosis of diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, kidney disease, myocardial infarction, stroke, and coronary artery disease among increasing BMI categories. Results Higher BMI was associated with increased odds of all conditions. For BMI ≥ 50 kg/m2, odds were notably elevated for diabetes (OR 8.32; 95% CI: 7.78–8.91), hypertension (OR 6.07; 95% CI: …

Sexually transmitted infections, e.g., Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG), and Mycoplasma genitalium (MG), present with similar signs/symptoms and are often treated empirically due to delays in receiving diagnostic test results. This study evaluated the clinical performance of the Cobas Liat CT/NG/MG nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT) in detecting these pathogens in a point-of-care (POC) setting. This non-interventional, multicenter study recruited symptomatic/asymptomatic participants from 13 geographically diverse POC sites across the USA. Prospective clinician- and self-collected specimens (urine/vaginal swabs) were used to determine the sensitivity and specificity of the Cobas Liat CT/NG/MG test relative to the composite reference standard (CRS), …

Innovative Glycerin Impregnation Of Female Livestock Genital Organs And Satisfaction Assessment For Veterinary Anatomy Education In Thailand, Paisan Tienthai, Jantima Intarapanya, Pawana Chuesiri
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Veterinary anatomy education faces several challenges, including increasing student enrollment, regulatory restrictions on animal use, and limitations of traditional preservation methods. Formalin preservation poses health risks, while plastination is costly and lacks flexibility. The conventional and modified Elnady Techniques present a safer and more cost-effective alternative, offering soft and flexible specimens; however, the adverse features still appear, and some steps require expensive equipment. This study aims to refine these Elnady Techniques, called ‘innovative glycerin impregnation’ for preserving female reproductive organs by reducing costs and simplifying the process using basic equipment. Additionally, veterinary students' satisfaction with glycerin-preserved specimens was compared to …

Non-Classical Mullerian Uterine Anomaly: A Case Report, Sandres Aodish, Michelle Chin, Tyler Dobratz, Patrick Swaney, James Zillman
Advances in Clinical Medical Research and Healthcare Delivery
Congenital uterine anomalies are malformations that occur during female fetal development. The maturation of the paramesonephric ducts (mullerian ducts) is responsible for the formation of the uterus and other reproductive organs. It is within this developmental process that mullerian anomalies occur. Abnormalities of the uterus can be classified as arcuate, septate, bicornuate, unicornuate, and uterine didelphys. Commonly, patients with mullerian anomalies are asymptomatic, however those that are symptomatic often present with fertility difficulties. Asymptomatic anomalies are often discovered incidentally, as was the case with the patient presented in this report. The patient is a 28-year-old G2P1001 39w0d who elected to …

Acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients with acute pancreatitis (AP) has been consistently shown to impact clinical outcomes and is a marker of organ dysfunction, being a primary indicator and driver of disease severity. The cornerstone of management of AP is aggressive intravenous fluid administration, and AKI has traditionally been a surrogate measure of the adequacy of volume repletion and is even recommended by the current ACG guidelines to be monitored in 6-hour intervals for 24-48 hours from presentation. While having been proven to be a factor of paramount importance on prior studies, the aim of our study is to …

Association Of Perioperative Factors With Lymph Node Positivity In Bladder Cancer Following Radical Cystectomy, Alyssa Laguerta, Kimberly Toumazos, Virgil Kevin Demario, Vaishnavi Patel, Balaji Reddy, Mark Quiring, Evan Jones, Young Son, Ronald Clearie, Thomas Mueller
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Introduction and objectives: The treatment of bladder carcinoma relies on a multimodal approach, including chemotherapy, radical cystectomy, and lymph node dissection, but clear guidelines for the optimal strategy remain ambiguous. Radical cystectomy is complex, with high morbidity and mortality, yet limited research has focused on its short-term implications for lymph node-positive bladder cancer. This study aims to address these gaps by identifying perioperative factors linked to lymph node positivity and comparing outcomes between lymph node-positive and negative patients.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 4382 bladder cancer patients who underwent radical cystectomy, collecting comprehensive clinical and surgical data. Clinical …

Case Report: Pigtail Suprapubic Catheter Placement In A Patient With Acute Urinary Retention And Abdominal Mesh, Clara Keum, Zamran Masih, James Espinosa, Alan Lucerna
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Acute urinary retention (AUR) is a urological emergency that requires immediate bladder decompression and management of the underlying condition to prevent further complications such as urinary tract infection and renal failure. When standard urethral catheterization is not feasible, a suprapubic catheter can be used to achieve adequate bladder drainage. However, in patients with structural or anatomical challenges, such as the presence of surgical mesh, suprapubic catheter placement can be difficult. This case report presents the successful placement of an 8.5 French pigtail catheter and urinary drainage in an 86-year-old male with abdominal mesh who presented with AUR.

The Role Of Occupational Therapy In Bladder And Bowel Management For Individuals With Spinal Cord Injuries: An Educational Video Series, Julia Ryan
Student Capstone Papers
Occupational therapy (OT) practitioners are uniquely positioned to support individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) in developing effective bowel and bladder management (BBM) routines. However, most existing literature approaches BBM from a medical perspective, offering limited guidance on how to translate occupation-based strategies into OT practice. This lack of discipline-specific resources contributes to reduced confidence among generalist practitioners and hinders the consistent implementation of BBM interventions across inpatient and community settings. To address this gap, a nine-part educational video series was developed to enhance OT practitioners’ knowledge, clinical reasoning, and confidence in delivering BBM interventions for clients with SCI. The …
Sonographic Evaluation Of An Urachal Remnant: A Case Report, Courtney Gushi
Sonographic Evaluation Of An Urachal Remnant: A Case Report, Courtney Gushi
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Urachal anomalies are rare and often identified incidentally during diagnostic imaging studies, such as sonography. These anomalies are being detected with increasing frequency due to advancements in cross-sectional medical imaging. Sonography is a key diagnostic modality due to its lack of radiation, cost-effectiveness, and widespread ability. Urachal anomalies have the potential to undergo pathological changes, leading to inflammation, infection, and even malignancy. Therefore, it is imperative for sonographers to be proficient in identifying and understanding sonographic characteristics of urachal abnormalities.

Research Symposium
Background: Understanding the connections between the skin and urogenital systems is important for medical students, as many diseases affect both areas. Dermatology and urology are often taught separately, but combining them into a single learning resource could help students see how these systems are linked. By including real clinical cases in a multidisciplinary atlas, students might better understand anatomy, retain knowledge longer, and develop stronger problem-solving skills. This review explores how combining dermatological and urological anatomy in one atlas could improve medical education.
Methods: This literature review synthesizes findings from peer-reviewed studies on multidisciplinary teaching strategies, case-based learning, and visual …

Cervical cancer screening (CCS) is a crucial test used for preventative measures against cervical cancer, yet transgender men (TM) experience significantly lower screening rates in comparison to cisgender women due to pain, anxiety, and systemic healthcare barriers. A major factor for deterrence is pain during speculum insertion, often because of vaginal atrophy related to testosterone usage. Other factors include fear of discrimination, mistreatment, and lack of provider awareness, particularly among nurses who play a pivotal role in patient preparation and care. This research aims to assess the extent of nurses’ knowledge regarding Pap smears for female-to-male (FTM) patients through a …
