Objective: Bichectomy, a surgical procedure that removes the buccal fat pad, can affect masticatory function, including bite force and muscle thickness, in adult women. This study aimed to assess the bite force as well as masseter and temporal muscle thicknesses before and 30 and 60 days after bichectomy in adult women. Methods: This longitudinal study included a sample of 20 adult women (mean age 31.1 ± 9.84 years), with normal occlusion and no history of temporomandibular disorder. The Hedgehog (HH) pathway regulates embryonic development of anterior tongue taste fungiform papilla (FP) and the posterior circumvallate (CVP) and foliate (FOP) taste papillae. HH signaling also mediates taste organ maintenance and regeneration in adults. However, there are knowledge gaps in HH pathway component expression during postnatal taste organ differentiation and maturation. Importantly, the HH transcriptional effectors GLI1, GLI2 and GLI3 have not been investigated in early postnatal stages; the HH receptors PTCH1, GAS1, CDON and HHIP, required to either drive HH pathway activation or antagonism, also remain unexplored. Patients suffering from Parkinson’s Disease will typically experience a range of motor and nonmotor symptoms. Characteristic signs of Parkinson’s include pill-rolling tremor, stooped posture, and shuffling gate. Patients with this disease can also develop oropharyngeal dysfunction, which can disable patients from meeting their physiologic needs. Understanding this disability and the changes in mastication kinematics can lead to potential future treatment. Our study induced Parkinson’s in rats with rotenone injections. Their jaw kinematics were identified through fluoroscopy of radio-opaque beads implanted into different areas of their jaws. Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a prevalent and devastating neurodegenerative disorder that causes progressively worsening motor symptoms affecting locomotor and oropharyngeal function. There is limited research in animal models on swallowing dysfunction in PD. To examine how neurodegeneration in PD produces progressive impairment in the oropharyngeal and locomotor processes, rotenone, a type II mitochondrial inhibitor, was injected into Lewis rat models to reproduce a parkinsonian phenotype. We hypothesized that the animal models injected with the rotenone will exhibit both oropharyngeal dysfunction and locomotor deficiency with an increased deficit that correlates with prolonged treatment. The purpose of this systematic review is to evaluate auriculotemporal nerve blocks for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder management. 583 articles reviewed from five databases, selected four studies for pooled analysis on visual analog scale (VAS) and maximum mouth opening (MMO) outcomes. Pooled analysis showed significant improvement in VAS (-2.27, p < 0.001) and MMO (0.94, p = 0.03) post-auriculotemporal nerve blocks for TMJ disorder. Auriculotemporal nerve blocks demonstrate potential effectiveness in TMJ disorder treatment, warranting further research on long-term effects and side effects.

Angioedema is defined as a non-pitting edema that involves the subcutaneous layer and additionally may include submucosal layers of tissue which pertain to the face, oral cavity, larynx, lips, extremities and gastrointestinal tract; this becomes a life-threatening situation particularly when there is involvement of the larynx. Angioedema may be classified as either histamine-mediated or bradykinin-mediated. Histamine-mediated, associated with mast-cell and basophil activation, is the most common. Bradykinin-mediated (secondary to hereditary, acquired C1-inhibitor deficiency, ACEI-associated angioedema) occur when an allergic reaction and hives will not trigger this reaction. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2023), one in four older adults experiences a fall each year. Falls are the world's second most prominent cause of accidental deaths (World Health Organization [WHO], 2021). Biopsy of the lip is a procedure most used by dermatologists in order to obtain histopathological evaluation of a lesion. It has remained the definitive method of diagnosis for many pathologies, including malignancy. However, although the incidence of lip malignancy has been relatively unchanged since 2012, the number of lip biopsies performed has not followed the same trend, but rather steeply declined since. In this study, the national trends in lip biopsies are evaluated. The Medicare Provider Utilization and Payment (MPUP) database was used to evaluate these practice trends in Medicare providers.

Opioid Use Disorder is patterns of opioid use leading to withdrawal, giving up important life events in order to use opioids, and excessive time spent using opioids, to name a few diagnostic criteria. The clinical progression of the disorder involves periods of acute exacerbation and remission that are cyclic in nature. Treatment is most effective when it includes both pharmacological and psychosocial modalities, referred to as medication assisted therapy (MAT). Abdominal Pain With Rigidity Secondary To The Anti-Emetic Drug Metoclopramide, Nadeem Ullah Khan, Junaid A. Razzak

We report a case of abdominal pain with rigidity, mimicking an acute abdomen, caused by metoclopramide, a common anti-emetic drug. Extrapyramidal symptoms are commonly reported side-effects of this medication. They generally include involuntary movements of limbs, torticollis, oculogyric crisis, rhythmic protrusion of tongue, trismus, or dystonic reactions resembling tetanus, etc. Abdominal rigidity due to this medication, resembling an acute abdomen, has not been reported previously. This case report illustrates the importance of considering medication side-effects when evaluating a patient with abdominal pain and rigidity.
