The following fictional case is intended as a learning tool within the Pathology Competencies for Medical Education (PCME), a set of national standards for teaching pathology. These are divided into three basic competencies: Disease Mechanisms and Processes, Organ System Pathology, and Diagnostic Medicine and Therapeutic Pathology.
A Comparative Analysis Of Perineuronal Nets In Trout And Zebrafish Models, Adnan Alyan
A Comparative Analysis Of Perineuronal Nets In Trout And Zebrafish Models, Adnan Alyan
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Perineuronal nets (PNNs) are specialized extracellular matrix structures that surround certain types of neurons in the central nervous system. Research from the past few decades has cemented PNNs as an integral player in the closure and onset of critical periods, memory modulation, and neural plasticity. These effects are thought to occur when PNNs form around a neuron and structurally stabilize its synaptic connections. PNNs have been directly linked to behavioral changes, making them of interest to psychologists as well as neuroscientists. Several PNN components, such as Hapln1 and aggrecan such as have been found in zebrafish, a teleost fish (Kang …
Nf-Κb As An Inducible Regulator Of Inflammation In The Central Nervous System, Sudha Anilkumar, Elizabeth Wright-Jin
Nf-Κb As An Inducible Regulator Of Inflammation In The Central Nervous System, Sudha Anilkumar, Elizabeth Wright-Jin
Department of Medicine Faculty Papers
The NF-κB (nuclear factor K-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells) transcription factor family is critical for modulating the immune proinflammatory response throughout the body. During the resting state, inactive NF-κB is sequestered by IκB in the cytoplasm. The proteasomal degradation of IκB activates NF-κB, mediating its translocation into the nucleus to act as a nuclear transcription factor in the upregulation of proinflammatory genes. Stimuli that initiate NF-κB activation are diverse but are canonically attributed to proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines. Downstream effects of NF-κB are cell type-specific and, in the majority of cases, result in the activation of pro-inflammatory cascades. Acting as …

Males With Chronic Ankle Instability Demonstrate Deficits In Neurocognitive Function Compared To Control And Copers, Adam B. Rosen, Melanie L. Mcgrath, Arthur C. Maerlender
Males With Chronic Ankle Instability Demonstrate Deficits In Neurocognitive Function Compared To Control And Copers, Adam B. Rosen, Melanie L. Mcgrath, Arthur C. Maerlender
Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior: Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to determine if there were neurocognitive deficits among controls, copers and those with chronic ankle instability (CAI). Participants included those without history of ankle injury (n = 14), ankle sprain copers (n = 13) and patients with self-reported CAI (n = 14). They completed a battery of valid and reliable computer-based neurocognitive tests. The differences between neurocognitive domain scores were compared across the Control, Coper and CAI groups. Patients with CAI had lower composite memory, visual memory and simple attention compared to controls. In males with CAI, large differences in memory and attention were …
Alterations In Cortical Activation Among Individuals With Chronic Ankle Instability During Single-Limb Postural Control, Adam B. Rosen, Jennifer M. Yentes, Melanie L. Mcgrath, Arthur C. Maerlender, Sara A. Myers, Mukul Mukherjee
Alterations In Cortical Activation Among Individuals With Chronic Ankle Instability During Single-Limb Postural Control, Adam B. Rosen, Jennifer M. Yentes, Melanie L. Mcgrath, Arthur C. Maerlender, Sara A. Myers, Mukul Mukherjee
Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior: Faculty Publications
Context: Chronic ankle instability (CAI) is characterized by repetitive ankle sprains and perceived instability. Whereas the underlying cause of CAI is disputed, alterations in cortical motor functioning may contribute to the perceived dysfunction.
Objective: To assess differences in cortical activity during single-limb stance among control, coper, and CAI groups.
Design: Cross-sectional study.
Setting: Biomechanics laboratory.
Patients or Other Participants: A total of 31 individuals (10 men, 21 women; age = 22.3 ± 2.4 years, height = 169.6 ± 9.7 cm, mass = 70.6 ± 11.6 kg), who were classified into control (n = 13), coper (n = 7), and CAI …
Strain-Dependent Variation In The Early Transcriptional Response To Cns Injury Using A Cortical Explant System, David J. Graber, Brent T. Harris, William F. Hickey
Strain-Dependent Variation In The Early Transcriptional Response To Cns Injury Using A Cortical Explant System, David J. Graber, Brent T. Harris, William F. Hickey
Dartmouth Scholarship
While it is clear that inbred strains of mice have variations in immunological responsiveness, the influence of genetic background following tissue damage in the central nervous system is not fully understood. A cortical explant system was employed as a model for injury to determine whether the immediate transcriptional response to tissue resection revealed differences among three mouse strains. Immunological mRNAs were measured in cerebral cortex from SJL/J, C57BL/6J, and BALB/cJ mice using real time RT-PCR. Freshly isolated cortical tissue and cortical sections incubated in explant medium were examined. Levels of mRNA, normalized to β-actin, were compared using one way analysis …
Central Nervous System Involvement In Multiple Myeloma, Rohana Naqi, Muhammad Azeemuddin, Humera Ahsan
Central Nervous System Involvement In Multiple Myeloma, Rohana Naqi, Muhammad Azeemuddin, Humera Ahsan
Department of Radiology
Involvement of the central nervous system by multiple myeloma (MM) is considered to be extremely rare. Magnetic Resonauce Imaging (MRI) is the imaging modality of choice to detect and differentiate myeloma at unusual sites. We present the case of a sixty-year-old man who was a known case of MM. In this case report MRI findings of central nervous system in myeloma lesions are reported. The purpose is to increase the awareness of the clinical presentation, neuroradiological findings and follow-up of multiple myeloma with intracranial growth. There are only a few reported cases found concerning MM with intracranial involvement in the …
Identification And Characterization Of The Expression Profile Of Oligodendrocyte-Derived And Associated Proteins Via Unilateral X-Irradation Of The Rat Optic Nerve, Nicholas Greco
Theses and Dissertations
Recent studies examining cell-cell interactions during CNS development and following disease or trauma have highlighted our limited understanding of the in vivo functions of the myelinating cell of the CNS, the oligodendrocyte. With this in mind, our laboratory has developed techniques by which a profile of proteins derived from or regulated by oligodendrocytes can be elucidated. Specifically, we have demonstrated that oligodendrocytes can be selectively eliminated from one optic nerve of a rat by treating the animal with a unilateral exposure of X-irradiation at the time of birth. Consequently, this approach allowed us to experimentally create, within the same animal, …
