Vertebral Morphology Of Loeys-Dietz Spine, Myung-Jin Cha, William Elnemer, Paul D. Sponseller
Vertebral Morphology Of Loeys-Dietz Spine, Myung-Jin Cha, William Elnemer, Paul D. Sponseller
Research Colloquium
Introduction: Understanding pedicle and laminar anatomy is crucial for secure fixation of spinal instrumentation and to ultimately prevent complications such as pseudoarthrosis. This study explores the spinal morphology in the LD vertebrae and compares it to vertebrae of TDP.
Methods: The morphology of 36 vertebrae from T1 to L5 were measured in 4 LD syndrome patients, using MRI and CT scans. The morphology of 140 vertebrae from T1 to L5 were measured in non-connective tissue disorder patients, using MRI, CT, and X-rays. These values were then compared to each other. Comparisons via paired Student’s t-test were made between the concave …
Upper Extremity Neurologic Injury Following Surgery For Early-Onset Scoliosis, Myung-Jin Cha, Daniel Badin, Paul D. Sponseller
Upper Extremity Neurologic Injury Following Surgery For Early-Onset Scoliosis, Myung-Jin Cha, Daniel Badin, Paul D. Sponseller
Research Colloquium
Introduction: In our study, we aim to characterize the incidence, risk factors, and outcome for and outcomes of upper extremity (UE) neurologic injury following operations for patients with early onset scoliosis (EOS).
Methods:EOS patients who underwent surgical correction of their scoliosis were selected from a multicenter database. The patient cohort was then analyzed in their demographics, etiology of scoliosis, details of the injury, type of spinal implant, and changes in cobb angle and kyphosis. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize this cohort of patients.
Results: Out of 4653 EOS patients who underwent surgery in the multicenter database, 10 patients …
Surgically Relevant Anatomy Of Marfan Spinal Deformity, Myung-Jin Cha, William Elnemer, Paul D. Sponseller
Surgically Relevant Anatomy Of Marfan Spinal Deformity, Myung-Jin Cha, William Elnemer, Paul D. Sponseller
Research Colloquium
Introduction: Understanding pedicle and laminar anatomy is crucial for secure fixation of spinal instrumentation. This study explores the spinal morphology in the Marfan vertebrae and compares it to vertebrae of TDP.
Methods: The morphology of 134 vertebrae from T1 to L5 were measured in 16 Marfan patients with spine deformity, using MRI and CT scans. The morphology of 140 vertebrae from T1 to L5 were measured in TDP, using MRI, CT, and X-rays. These values were then compared to each other. Comparisons via paired Student’s t-test were made between the concave and convex side of the curve.
Results: On average, …

Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Introduction:
Hemivertebrae are rare congenital anomalies that can cause severe scoliosis requiring surgical correction. We aimed to determine whether severity of deformities is associated with more long-term surgical complications following surgical correction.
Methods:
We performed a retrospective, single-institution review on patients who underwent hemivertebrectomy and spinal fusion for congenital scoliosis between 2008-2020. We extracted pertinent data on demographics, radiographic parameters, operative details, and complication rates. Subgroup analyses were also done by complication severity, deformity complexity, and construct length.
Results:
In our series, 30 patients underwent hemivertebrectomy and fusion. Mean age was 9±4.2 years and there was 2:1 male preponderance, with …

Spinal surgical procedures often require release of intervertebral discs and ligaments to optimally achieve postural correction on a patient-specific basis. In this paper, a T7-T8 Finite Element (FE) model is utilized to examine internal load sharing during resection steps performed in a Ponte osteotomy. The FE model was rotated bidirectionally along three anatomical planes using an externally applied moment. In each step, the Ranges of Motion (RoM), Instantaneous Centers of Rotation (ICR), and forces from ligaments, discs, facet, and costovertebral joints were calculated. The product of each component’s force and the distance between the ICR and their position were used …
Integrating Alexander Technique Into Treatment Of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis To Improve Patient Quality Of Life, Ana Nishioka
Integrating Alexander Technique Into Treatment Of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis To Improve Patient Quality Of Life, Ana Nishioka
Scripps Senior Theses
The following thesis posits training in the Alexander Technique as a possible solution to address the comorbidities of poor body image and reduced feelings of efficacy in patients treated for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). Both literature and personal accounts of AIS highlight that current conservative methods of treating AIS offered by the Western medical sphere, including observation, bracing, and physical therapy, do not adequately address, and may actually exacerbate, negative mental health symptoms. Patients are often represented as their external orthopedic diagnosis and receive limited emotional guidance in exploring their internal feelings about their body and its capabilities. Alexander Technique …

BACKGROUND: Distraction-type rods mechanically stabilize the thorax and improve lung growth and function by applying distraction forces at the rib, spine, pelvis, or a combination of locations. However, the amount of stability the rods provide and the amount the thorax needs is unknown.
METHODS: Five freshly frozen and thawed cadaveric thoracic spine specimens were tested for lateral bending, flexion/extension, and axial rotation in displacement control (1°/sec) to a load limit of ±5 Nm for five cycles after which a growth-friendly unilateral rod was placed in a simulated rib-to-lumbar attachment along the right side. The specimens were tested again in the …

Background: While adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) produces well characterized deformation in spinal form, the effect on spinal function, namely mobility, is not well known. Better understanding of scoliotic spinal mobility could yield better treatment targets and diagnoses. The purpose of this study was to characterize the spinal mobility differences due to AIS. It was hypothesized that the AIS group would exhibit reduced mobility compared to the typical adolescent (TA) group.
Methods: Eleven adolescents with right thoracic AIS, apices T6-T10, and eleven age- and gender-matched TAs moved to their maximum bent position in sagittal and coronal plane bending tasks. A Trakstar …
