The Use Of Intramedullary Screw For Fixation Of Distal Ulnar Fractures, Adam Lencer, John Pignataro, Justin Le, Joyce Daniel Suarez, Michael Rivlin
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Background
Distal ulna fractures frequently accompany distal radius fractures but are often underappreciated in both clinical and research contexts. While conservative management is frequently employed, particularly following volar locking plate (VLP) fixation of the radius, certain indications, such as distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) instability, comminution, or high-energy trauma, may necessitate surgical fixation. This study evaluates patient-reported outcomes among patients with distal radius fractures treated operatively, comparing those with and without concomitant distal ulna fractures, and further stratifying based on the method of ulna fixation.
Methods
This retrospective review included 477 patients treated operatively for distal radius fractures by a single …

Incidence, Risk Factors, And Clinical Outcomes Of Heterotropic Ossification Following Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty, Adam Friedman, Clarence Clark Ii, Jaylyn Thompson
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Introduction: Heterotropic ossification (HO) is the pathologic formation of bone in soft tissue, often following trauma or surgery. HO is a common radiographic finding after reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA), yet its incidence, risk factors, and clinical significance remains under-explored. Despite the relatively high incidence, the etiology, risk factors, and functional outcomes are not understood.
Methods: This is a literature review to understand the incidence, risk factors, and clinical outcomes of HO following RSA. Pubmed, Embase, and Web of Science were the databases used to review nine peer-reviewed sources. No restrictions were placed on publication date due to the sparsity of …

Does Sports-Specialization Increase The Risk Of Injury In Youth Athletes?, Kinjal Shah
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Sports specialization, defined as intensive, year-round training in a single sport for more than eight months per year, has become increasingly prevalent among youth athletes. While it is often pursued with the goal of elite performance, early specialization may increase the risk of both physical injuries and psychological strain. This risk is especially pronounced in individual sports such as swimming and tennis, where early and focused training is frequently encouraged. This study explores the association between early sports specialization and injury risk in young athletes, with the goal of identifying contributing factors and informing prevention strategies. Evidence suggests that while …

Background
Knee osteoarthritis (OA), a multifactorial degenerative joint disease with growing prevalence in aging and obese populations, leads to disabling pain. Traditionally viewed as mechanically driven, increasing research implicates systemic inflammation and metabolic and neuroimmune modulation. The gut microbiome—an ecosystem of commensal organisms regulating host immune, metabolic, and inflammatory regulation—has emerged as a potential contributor to OA pathogenesis and symptom severity. This review aims to synthesize literature evaluating associations between gut microbiota composition and knee OA, focusing on inflammatory pathways, pain modulation, and emerging therapies.
Methods
A literature search was conducted using PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science. Inclusion …

Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis Examining If Hyperplasia Occurs In Humans In Response To Resistance Exercise, Hitesh Gowda, Scott Dankel, Harshal Parmar, Nicholas Barton
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Background: It is commonly believed that resistance exercise in humans induces muscle growth primarily via muscle hypertrophy, but there is some debate as to whether muscle hyperplasia occurs. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to quantitively assess whether the presence of muscle hyperplasia occurs in humans performing resistance training.
Methods: Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched on May 17, 2024. Studies that assessed muscle fiber number pre and post resistance training were included in a three-level random effects model to assess changes in muscle fiber number.
Results: A total of 11 studies met the search criteria, with all …

Musculoskeletal Changes In Pregnancy: Implications For Long-Term Bone & Joint Health, Jaylyn Thompson, Clarence Julian Clark Ii, Nayarith Lopez, Aziza Ndaw
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Pregnancy and lactation represent significant physiological challenges to maternal skeletal health, with substantial implications for both short and long-term musculoskeletal integrity. Research emphasizes that lactation induces notable skeletal adaptations, with up to 10% bone mineral density loss occurring in trabecular-rich regions such as the spine and hip (1,5). While most women experience substantial recovery post-weaning, the research indicates that recovery patterns vary significantly, with some women experiencing incomplete restoration of bone mass, potentially compromising long-term skeletal strength (3).
The underlying mechanisms driving these changes are primarily hormonal, with elevated parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) and decreased estrogen levels during lactation facilitating …

Case Report : Perilunate Fracture After A Fall On An Outstretched Hand, Meghna Kurup, Nicholas Tomasello, James Espinosa, Alan Lucerna
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
We report the case of a 44-year-old male that presented to the emergency department (ED) with a fall on his outstretched hand and was subsequently diagnosed to have a trans-scaphoid perilunate dislocation. He underwent closed reduction of the dislocation in the ED and operative management ten days later. While wrist injuries are common in the ED, it is important to diagnose perilunate and lunate dislocations early as they can often be associated with avascular necrosis, neurological injury and poor functional outcomes if not managed in a timely manner.
Assessing Sleep Quality In A Preclinical Model Of Low Back Pain Through Novel Noninvasive Methods, Lydia C. Saltz
Assessing Sleep Quality In A Preclinical Model Of Low Back Pain Through Novel Noninvasive Methods, Lydia C. Saltz
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Chronic low back pain (LBP) has widespread negative impacts on quality of life. Current treatments for chronic LBP fail to provide long-term efficacy and motivate the need to understand key drivers of poor patient outcomes. Mounting evidence indicates that sleep disturbances and chronic LBP have a strong reciprocal relationship. Women may be particularly vulnerable to the negative impacts of the sleep-pain axis, exhibiting greater prevalence in both conditions. However, the relationship between sleep, pain, and sex remains understudied. Preclinical models can be used to parse out characteristic sleep features that degrade with pain, which can be further broken out by …

Structural neuroplasticity in the brain may contribute to the persistence of low back pain (LBP) symptoms and the disability associated with them. It is not known if structural adaptations are evident early in the lifespan in young adults with LBP. This study compared gray matter in cortical sensorimotor regions in young adults with and without persistent LBP and identified gray matter and clinical predictors of pain-related disability. Eighty-two individuals with and without a history of LBP participated. Peak and average gray matter density in cortical sensorimotor regions of interest was quantified using voxel-based morphometry. Pain-related disability, pain intensity, pain duration, …

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research
Recent advances in small-joint arthroscopy and cutting-edge magnetic resonance imaging systems have enabled orthopedic surgeons to perform more complex repairs of the wrist. Such repairs can include those of the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) of the wrist that necessitates a reappraisal of its morphometry with special emphasis on the relationship between its articular disc (AD) and surrounding tissues. The TFCC AD is a fibrocartilaginous, biconcave structure located between the ulnar styloid process and the carpal bones of the wrist. We carefully dissected and measured the ADs of 58 wrists from 34 embalmed cadavers (20 females, 14 males) and fabricated three-dimensional …

When Creatine Kinase Soars: A Case Of Viral Myositis In The Absence Of Rhabdomyolysis, Jose J. Loayza Pintado, Jorge Aboytes Trevino, Andres Suarez Parraga
Research Symposium
Background: Myositis is muscle inflammation commonly causing symmetrical pain, especially in the proximal muscles, often triggered by viral infections. Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), a human-exclusive virus, is linked to acute viral myositis (AVM). Typically, AVM presents with sudden bilateral muscle pain and systemic symptoms like fever, nausea, and vomiting, occurring after a recent respiratory or gastrointestinal infection. Diagnosis involves measuring creatine kinase (CK) levels, liver function tests, and viral studies. While viral myositis is self-limiting and generally resolves within two weeks with supportive care, complications like rhabdomyolysis can occur. We present a case of EBV-induced viral myositis with significantly elevated CK …
