Gastrocnemius-Soleus Muscle Tendon Unit Changes Over The First 12 Weeks Of Adjusted Age In Infants Born Preterm, Marybeth Grant-Beuttler, Robert J. Palisano, Debra P. Miller, Barbara Reddien Wagner, Carolyn B. Heriza, Patricia A. Shewokis
Gastrocnemius-Soleus Muscle Tendon Unit Changes Over The First 12 Weeks Of Adjusted Age In Infants Born Preterm, Marybeth Grant-Beuttler, Robert J. Palisano, Debra P. Miller, Barbara Reddien Wagner, Carolyn B. Heriza, Patricia A. Shewokis
Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research
Background and Purpose: Differences in the gastrocnemius-soleus muscle and tendon have been documented shortly after birth in infants born preterm compared with infants born at term. Knowledge of muscle tendon unit lengths at term age to 12 weeks of age in infants born preterm may be useful in understanding motor development.
Participants and Method: Gastrocnemius-soleus muscle tendon unit lengths were compared at term age, at 6 weeks of age, and at 12 weeks of age (preterm adjusted age) in 20 infants born full term and 22 infants born preterm.
Results: Significant differences were found between the 2 groups on taut …

"We thank Heathcock for taking the time to write her commentaryregarding our study. Her comments are interesting, and our subsequent investigation into these ideas has led us to uncover some enlightening evidence in relation to the topics raised in the commentary. We will attempt to review each of the topics raised and the evidence associated with these topics."

Chronic Elbow Dislocation Treated With Open Reduction And Lateral Ulnar Collateral Ligament Reconstruction, Louis Joseph Rubino, Michael A. Herbenick, Ryan P. Finnan, Philip A. Anloague
Physical Therapy Faculty Publications
In the United States, chronic unreduced elbow dislocations are rare injuries. We report the successful short-term outcome of a chronic elbow dislocation treated with open reduction and lateral ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction using a split semitendinosus allograft in a figure-of-8 technique without use of hinged external fixation. The authors have obtained the patient’s written informed consent for print and electronic publication of the case report.

The objective of this chapter is to summarize the current standards of pain management in minor sports-related musculoskeletal injuries. This chapter also addresses the topical form of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug as an effective pain management option in an outpatient setting. Design: Quantitive systematic review of randomized controlled trials. Methods: The data was obtained through literature review of articles published in the last 10 years. In addition, FDA information on non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications was also reviewed. The patient population studied in the articles included children and adults. Conclusion: Current standards of managing pain resulting from sports injuries involve a number of …

High Dietary Fat Intake Is Not Associated With High Levels Of Circulating Lipoproteins Or Total Cholesterol, C. Jayne Brahler, C. Wilson, Janine Baer
Physical Therapy Faculty Publications
The objective of this study was to determine the association between dietary intake of fats, waist to hip ratio (WHR), body mass index (BMI), and blood lipoproteins and total cholesterol (TC) using food frequency data in one group of apparently healthy, urban African American women and their daughters (n = 110). Subjects were fasted when blood was drawn, waist and hip circumferences and body weight and height were measured, and WHR and BMI were calculated.
Average daily total fat intakes were 91.46 g and 77.83 g for mothers and daughters, respectively, but average LDL levels of 104.4 g/L and 103.1 …

Family Physicians, Chiropractors, And Back Pain, Peter Curtis, Geoffrey M. Bove
Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications
In this article, major aspects of back care provided to patients by family physicians and chiropractors are reviewed, and the recent guidelines on spinal manipulation therapy are discussed. These guidelines should be useful for family physicians wishing to refer patients to chiropractors.
The Inhibition Of Bone Formation Occurring Under Weightlessness : The Effect Of Skeletal Unloading On Serum Levels Of A Bone-Derived Growth Factor, Jean D. Sibonga
The Inhibition Of Bone Formation Occurring Under Weightlessness : The Effect Of Skeletal Unloading On Serum Levels Of A Bone-Derived Growth Factor, Jean D. Sibonga
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
A deleterious effect of spaceflight on human health is the loss of bone associated with the prolonged lack of gravitational stress on the skeleton. A potential for bone loss is indicated by the hypercalciuria and decreased heel bone density determined in Skylab astronauts. Histological studies of juvenile laboratory rats in actual spaceflight and in simulation models document a suppression of bone formation with little alteration of bone resorption. The mechanism for net bone loss needs to be defined in order to develop measures for its prevention or correction.
Skeletal growth factors, which may mediate coupling and locally regulate bone volume …
Cineradiography Of The Temporomandibular Joint : A Research Entity And Diagnostic Modality, L. Albert Lewis
Cineradiography Of The Temporomandibular Joint : A Research Entity And Diagnostic Modality, L. Albert Lewis
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Readily accessible equipment as utilized for cineangiography has been demonstrated to be useful in producing dynamic studies of the temporomandibular joint.
The reproducible studies have been obtained without adaptation of equipment. Methods used in this project were based on principles which have been advocated for the past thirty years for static radiographs of the temporomandibular joints.
Studies were made of a variety of subjects varying in size and joint integrity. Diagnostic views were obtained on all subjects showing normal osseous joint structures and typical joint function via the use of motion picture records. Changes in osseous joint structures were readily …
