Legal Disputes Over Frozen Embryos After Dobbs: A Retrospective Study Of Claims, Contracts, And Liability In Cases Of Divorce Or Separation, Gerard Letterie, Dov Fox
Legal Disputes Over Frozen Embryos After Dobbs: A Retrospective Study Of Claims, Contracts, And Liability In Cases Of Divorce Or Separation, Gerard Letterie, Dov Fox
Pace Law Review
This study reviewed legal claims and clinic liability over disputed frozen embryos in cases of divorce or separation. Our data shows that one-third of cases had no prior arrangement regarding disposition about what to do in the event of separation or divorce. When agreements were in place they were rarely clear enough to determine the court’s resolution in these cases. In a post-Dobbs era, absence of adequate guidance could have significant implications regarding liability for all parties.
Are Embryos Or Fetuses Brain Dead? Implications For The Abortion Debate, Greer Donley
Are Embryos Or Fetuses Brain Dead? Implications For The Abortion Debate, Greer Donley
Pace Law Review
Most state abortion definitions exclude the removal of a dead fetus, attempting to distinguish miscarriage and abortion care. But what does “dead” mean at the earliest stages of potential life? There is a consensus at the end of life that death not only encompasses the cessation of cardiac activity, but also brain death. This symposium essay considers whether life can only begin with the emergence of brain life and if so, how that might impact the abortion debate. The most rudimentary brain waves cannot be detected in an embryo before roughly the eighth week of pregnancy; the capacity for feeling …
Personhood, Politics, Assisted Reproduction, And The Law Post-Dobbs, Myrisha S. Lewis
Personhood, Politics, Assisted Reproduction, And The Law Post-Dobbs, Myrisha S. Lewis
Pace Law Review
With the end of the federal constitutional right to abortion, state legislatures and state courts have become far more important in the sphere of reproductive rights. Before Dobbs, anti-abortion advocates had significant (albeit increasingly porous) ceilings on what they could prohibit in relation to reproductive health care. A significant check on those actions is now gone.
In the wake of Dobbs, societal debates about personhood have increased and expanded in terms of their practical implications. Before Dobbs, anti-abortion advocates admitted that Roe and subsequent cases limited the scope of their arguments, especially in relation to the legality …

The Role Of Sox9 In Epicardial-Mediated Cardiovascular Development And Valve Homeostasis, Andrew Brantley Harvey
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Congenital heart defects (CHDs) are the most common birth defects in humans, affecting as many as 1% of live births, thereby representing a major public health burden. These defects arise when signaling pathways and mechanical forces guiding heart development are disrupted, either by genetic mutations, aneuploidies, environmental influences, or any combination of these factors. The vast majority of CHDs have undetermined etiologies. Understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms of normal heart development is critical for unraveling the origins of CHDs and for developing more effective diagnostics and interventional treatments for those affected by cardiovascular diseases of developmental origin.

Background. The objective of this study was to describe the histological and immunohistochemical aspects of vomeronasal organ in two groups of (normal and pathological) embryos and fetuses, with chromosomal morphological abnormalities. Methods. The research was based on a retrospective, descriptive analysis, carried out over a period of 5 years. The study included 46 biopsy fragments taken from aborted embryos and fetuses aged between 9 and 23 weeks. We compared the microscopic structure of the vomeronasal organ using different histologic and immunohistochemical staining procedures. Results. Our results showed that in both groups of embryos and fetuses there are three major stages …

Birth Defect Trends Within Texas Public Health Region 11, 2000-2019: An Analysis Of Texas Department Of State Health Services Public Data., Miguel A. Lopez, Jonathan M. Hebert, Padmanabhan Rengasamy
Research Symposium
South Texas is a predominantly Hispanic region with high rates of chronic illness, poor healthcare access, and a history of birth defect clusters. Between 1986 and 1991, 47 cases of anencephaly in Cameron County were linked to elevated fumonisins in the region’s corn-based diet, prompting a series of ongoing public health efforts. This paper aims to identify changes in prevalence for CNS defects, in addition to cardiac, circulatory, gastrointestinal, and genitourinary defects in South Texas within the last two decades. Public data on 20 birth defects from the Texas Department of State Health Services were obtained for decades 2000-2010 and …
History Of Clover Leaf Syndrome, Isabella Perez
History Of Clover Leaf Syndrome, Isabella Perez
Mako: NSU Undergraduate Student Journal
The purpose of this paper is to summarize the history of clover leaf syndrome and describe the newest advancements made to treat it. Clover leaf syndrome is more formally referred to as Kleeblattschadel syndrome. Information was gathered from several scholarly, peer-reviewed articles, and was condensed down into the key takeaways. This syndrome impacts the formation of the skull due to premature fusion of its sutures, creating a tri-lobar skull that resembles a clover leaf. This premature fusion is referred to as a type of craniosynostosis and has been linked to causing several other health complications ranging in severity. This is …

Encephaloceles: A Comprehensive Exploration Of Research, Causes, Prevention, And Innovative Approaches To Diagnosis And Treatment, Amanda N. Bautista
Mako: NSU Undergraduate Student Journal
Encephaloceles, a rare medical condition derived from Greek words meaning "brain hernia," involve the protrusion of brain tissue, cerebrospinal fluid, or membranes through a defect in the skull. These anomalies often present at birth and can occur in various locations on the skull. Recent research has shed light on the possible causes of encephaloceles, including genetic factors such as the Sonic Hedgehog pathway and inadequate folic acid intake during pregnancy. Folic acid is essential for proper neural tube closure during fetal development, making it a key preventive measure.
Emerging treatments for encephaloceles show promise, with a focus on mesenchymal stem …
