Acute Physiological Responses To An Infrared Sauna Blanket Towards Home Based Passive Heat Therapy, Arlene Chaidez, Mia Gonzales, Amaryllis Rubalcaba, Meghan Walls, Rene Barbier

Posters - 2025

Repeated passive heat exposure can improve cardiovascular health outcomes. A novel infrared sauna blanket may enable home-based heat therapy, but these devices are yet understudied. By closely monitoring blood pressure, heart rate, core body temperature, and perceptual responses, it could be determined how a participant's body reacts to the infrared treatment. We found elevated cardiovascular activity in response to the sauna blanket, similar to that observed during moderate-intensity exercise. Therefore, the infrared sauna blanket may have potential for inducing long-term cardiovascular adaptations and become an accessible and costeffective way of treating/preventing chronic illness.

The soluble variant of the ectopeptidase CD13 (sCD13), released from the cell surface by matrix metalloproteinase 14 (MMP14), is a potent pro-inflammatory mediator, displaying chemotactic, angiogenic, and arthritogenic properties through bradykinin receptor B1 (B1R). We revealed a link between sCD13 and amplified neutrophil-mediated inflammatory responses in SARS-CoV-2 infection. sCD13 was markedly elevated in patients with COVID-19 and correlated with disease severity and variants, ethnicity, inflammation markers, and neutrophil extracellular trap formation (NETosis). Neutrophils treated with sCD13 showed heightened NETosis and chemotaxis, which were inhibited by sCD13 receptor blockade. Meanwhile sCD13 did not induce platelet aggregation. Single-cell analysis of COVID-19 lungs …

There is a growing number of people being affected by hypertension, often referred to as high blood pressure. Chronic high blood pressure (>130/80 mmHg) affects 45% of U.S. adults (Huguet et at., 2021). Chronic hypertension can have catastrophic outcomes, as it significantly increases the risk of stroke, heart attack, kidney failure, and heart failure. On top of this, this cardiovascular disease is often referred to as a "silent killer," because it tends to not present symptoms until serious damage already occurred. In addition to the negative effects on the individual, hypertension constitutes a large public heath burden, costing over …

Ocular Surface Glycocalyx In Health And Disease, Rafael Martínez-Carrasco, Ajay Sharma

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

The glycocalyx is a dynamic carbohydrate-enriched structure that forms a dense coating on the surface of animal cells, including those at the ocular surface. It plays a critical role in maintaining cellular functions and it has a significant influence in disease processes. At the ocular surface, glycoproteins such as mucins are essential for hydration, lubrication, and barrier protection. Proteoglycans and glycolipids contribute to cell signaling, and mediate interactions with pathogens. Alterations in the glycocalyx are implicated in a spectrum of ocular conditions, including dry eye disease, ocular allergies, infections, and systemic diseases such as Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and diabetes mellitus. …

Development Of A Synthetic Biomarker System For Early Detection Of Myocardial Infarction, Kennedy Alexis Bietz Mar 2025

Development Of A Synthetic Biomarker System For Early Detection Of Myocardial Infarction, Kennedy Alexis Bietz

Honors Thesis

Every year, thousands of Americans suffer from the event of a heart attack, i.e., myocardial infarction (MI). Currently, the early detection of MI remains a challenge. We intend to solve the problem by constructing a synthetic biomarker system that would be able to recognize early warning signs of MI, such as cellular inflammation and oxidative stress. We have proposed two different pathology specific genetic sensors that act as artificial promoters to transcribe a peptide that can be secreted into the blood stream and eventually work its way into the urine and act as a reporter that can be detected through …

Sonographic Evaluation Of An Urachal Remnant: A Case Report, Courtney Gushi Mar 2025

Sonographic Evaluation Of An Urachal Remnant: A Case Report, Courtney Gushi

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Urachal anomalies are rare and often identified incidentally during diagnostic imaging studies, such as sonography. These anomalies are being detected with increasing frequency due to advancements in cross-sectional medical imaging. Sonography is a key diagnostic modality due to its lack of radiation, cost-effectiveness, and widespread ability. Urachal anomalies have the potential to undergo pathological changes, leading to inflammation, infection, and even malignancy. Therefore, it is imperative for sonographers to be proficient in identifying and understanding sonographic characteristics of urachal abnormalities.

Department of Surgery Faculty Papers

Hypercapnia is a key feature of the respiratory microenvironment in many pathologic conditions. It occurs both as a regional and as a systemic process, and it is associated with multiple metabolic changes such as mitochondrial dysfunction, decreased ATP production, and metabolic shift from glycolytic energy production to fatty acid metabolism. In the cancer tumor microenvironment, hypercapnia has been linked at times to enhanced cell migration, invasion, and chemoresistance. Our previous work has shown that hypercapnia-associated gene signatures can be used as prognostic biomarkers. However, unlike the hypoxia-inducible factor pathway, there are no validated targets to quantify hypercapnia. In this study, …

The Role Of The Pthrp/Ihh Feedback Loop In The Unusual Growth Plate Location In Mammalian Metatarsals And Pisiforms., Philip Reno, Sherrie Wallace, Sarah N Doelp, Maria Biancaniello, Kelsey M. Kjosness

PCOM Scholarly Works

BACKGROUND: Longitudinal skeletal growth takes place in the cartilaginous growth plates. While growth plates are found at either end of conventional long bones, they occur at a variety of locations in the mammalian skeleton. For example, the metacarpals and metatarsals (MT) in the hands and feet form only a single growth plate at one end, and the pisiform in the wrist is the only carpal bone to contain a growth plate. We take advantage of this natural anatomical variation to test which components of the PTHrP/Ihh feedback loop, a fundamental regulator of chondrocyte differentiation, are specific to growth plate function. …

Kimmel Cancer Center Faculty Papers

The growth of breast tumors is driven and controlled by a subpopulation of cancer cells resembling adult stem cells, which are called cancer stem-like cells (CSCs). In breast cancer, the function and maintenance of CSCs are influenced by protein O-GlcNAcylation and the enzyme responsible for this post-translational modification, O-GlcNAc transferase (OGT). However, the mechanism of CSCs regulation by OGT and O-GlcNAc cycling in breast cancer is still unclear. Analysis of the proteome and O-GlcNAcome, revealed GATAD2B, a component of the Nucleosome Remodeling and Deacetylase (NuRD) complex, as a substrate regulated by OGT. Reducing GATAD2B genetically impairs mammosphere formation, decreases expression …

Research Symposium

Background: Myositis is muscle inflammation commonly causing symmetrical pain, especially in the proximal muscles, often triggered by viral infections. Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), a human-exclusive virus, is linked to acute viral myositis (AVM). Typically, AVM presents with sudden bilateral muscle pain and systemic symptoms like fever, nausea, and vomiting, occurring after a recent respiratory or gastrointestinal infection. Diagnosis involves measuring creatine kinase (CK) levels, liver function tests, and viral studies. While viral myositis is self-limiting and generally resolves within two weeks with supportive care, complications like rhabdomyolysis can occur. We present a case of EBV-induced viral myositis with significantly elevated CK …
