Comparative Anatomical Study Of The Brachial Plexus Of Primates, Alison Leann Camero
Comparative Anatomical Study Of The Brachial Plexus Of Primates, Alison Leann Camero
Masters Theses
Old world monkeys, new world monkeys, and humans all originate from a common ancestor. Although humans and old world monkeys are phylogenetically more closely related, old world monkeys and new world monkeys have similar locomotion. A difference in muscle patterns exists between old world monkeys, new world monkeys, and humans. Different musculature may be due to differences in locomotive patterns and species-specific use of their forearms. Muscles in the forelimbs are innervated by the nerves of the brachial plexus. There are differences among the brachial plexuses of human and non-human primates as well as variability within the species.

Assessment Of Motivation In Human Anatomy And Physiology Students, Mary Whitehead
Assessment Of Motivation In Human Anatomy And Physiology Students, Mary Whitehead
Honors Theses
Motivation is the key to success in difficult science courses such as Human Anatomy and Physiology. Students may possess intrinsic motivation, or motivation for enjoyment, extrinsic motivation, or motivation for a reward, or amotivation, a lack of motivation at all. The goal of this experiment was to identify better ways of helping students succeed in Human Anatomy and Physiology (HAP) at the University of Mississippi, determine when motivational efforts seem to decrease during the semester, and identify how to better develop intrinsic motivation in students. There was a significant relationship between many of the student’s survey responses to their exam …

The purpose of this study was to elucidate, under which conditions abattoir-acquired pig eyes are suitable for refractive excimer laser experiments. Porcine eyes from tunnel-scalded (n = 5) and tank-scalded (n = 10) pigs were compared to unscalded eyes (n = 5) and to eyes scalded in the laboratory (n = 5). The corneal epithelium was removed before an excimer laser was used to perform a - 8.0 D photoablation. Corneal thickness was measured by optical coherence topography before and after photoablation. The ablation depth was determined with a contour measuring station, the morphology of the ablated areas was characterized …
Anatomy And Physiology Preparatory Course Textbook (2nd Edition), Carlos Liachovitzky
Anatomy And Physiology Preparatory Course Textbook (2nd Edition), Carlos Liachovitzky
Open Educational Resources
The goal of this preparatory textbook is to give students a chance to become familiar with some terms and some basic concepts they will find later on in the Anatomy and Physiology course, especially during the first few weeks of the course.
Organization and functioning of the human organism are generally presented starting from the simplest building blocks, and then moving into levels of increasing complexity. This textbook follows the same presentation. It begins introducing the concept of homeostasis, then covers the chemical level, and later on a basic introduction to cellular level, organ level, and organ system level. This …

Incidental Finding Of Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return Of The Left Upper Lobe, A Rare Anatomical Variation, Anika Dutta, Loren Zuiderveld
Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews
Partial anomalous pulmonary venous return (PAPVR) is a rare congenital abnormality in which 1 to 3 of the pulmonary veins connect to the right atrium rather than the left atrium. In this synthesis of the literature on PAPVR of the left upper lobe, we attempt to illustrate this clinical entity using a case detected incidentally on chest computed tomography, explain the anatomical aspects of this anomaly, and summarize the reported incidence and etiology of left-sided PAPVR. Lastly, differential diagnoses, clinical relevance, and management of left-sided PAPVR are presented. The identification of this variant is important, as it may have serious …

The Coumadin Ridge: Incidental Finding Mimicking Thrombus On Echocardiogram, Keith Brown Jr., Matthew Everwine, Keith R. Anacker, Jose Nieves
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
The left atrial ridge or “coumadin ridge” is a cardiac anatomic structure located between the left pulmonary vein and the orfice of the left atrial appendage. Historically, patients were misdiagnosed with intra-atrial thrombus and were incorrectly placed on anticoagulation with warfarin, ultimately acquiring the name of the “coumadin ridge”. Fortunately this anatomical variant is now more commonly recognized, however when improperly identified can lead to unnecessary testing, cost, diagnosis anxiety, and inappropriate treatment for the patient. This purpose of this case is to bring awareness to this common clinical dilemma in an attempt to reduce ambiguity and unnecessary workups surrounding …
Preserving Safety While Upholding The Integrity Of Medical Education And Practical Skills: The Impact Of Covid-19 On Teaching Human Anatomy, Anna Cowan
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The global pandemic caused by COVID-19 placed constraints on several aspects of normal life, especially those of higher level education. While many programs moved to teaching in a strictly online format, there are some courses in which this structure was not appropriate. This study observed the outcome of the adapted course structure employed at Quillen College of Medicine during their Gross Human Anatomy course. Through a voluntary survey and multiple independent t-tests, it was demonstrated that the students who took the adapted course performed, on average, 2 points lower on each exam than previous classes. Also, this study showed that …

Analyzing Leadership Opportunities Through Participant Perspective, Cathryn Yaggie Heinen
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
The Anatomy Academic Assistant (AAA) practicum is a peer-mentoring program that helps participants further develop leadership skills. The goal of this research was to analyze leadership qualities through participant perspective and analyze the effectiveness of the AAA practicum in enhancing these leadership qualities. A 25-question survey, measuring participant perspective, was designed to include both rating-scale questions and free response questions. Rating-scale questions used a Likert scale with a corresponding assigned value. Free response questions also provided qualitative data that was grouped into overarching themes in a generated word cloud. The assigned value averages showed that participants largely agreed with the …

Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
Introducing problem-solving based methods of pedagogy is one approach to engage students early in their careers with developing analytic and diagnostic skills. PBL approaches in anatomy and medical teaching are a logical extension of clinical case studies, wherein an example of a pathology or clinical procedure is provided, and students must ascertain the anatomical and/or physiological basis for it. Students report a deeper understanding of material presented in clinical case studies, as the ‘real world’ relevance and importance is immediately clear (Cliff and Wright, 1996).

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is a fatal, progressive, neurodegenerative disease. There currently is no cure for the disease and limited treatment options have modest effects. A hallmark of the disease is motoneuron degeneration. Within the membrane of motoneurons are small-conductance calcium-activated potassium channels. SK Channels function to mediate medium afterhyperpolarization period of an action potential and have substantial influence on the firing rate of motoneurons. SK channels, specifically SK2 and SK3 isoforms, have been shown through immunohistochemistry to be affected in the SOD1G93A mouse model. The goal of this study was to investigate whether neonatal administration of CyPPA, a potent SK2 …

Gatekeeper courses such as Anatomy and Physiology are often referenced in discussions regarding the national shortage of persons in allied health professions. In an attempt to bolster access to STEM professions, some community colleges are mandating prerequisite courses such as Natural Sciences and/or General Biology for STEM gatekeeping courses. In this study, we examined which of these prerequisite courses helped students to pass Anatomy and Physiology and whether the courses are an additional barrier to STEM field completion. This was the first study to evaluate whether a prerequisite course was predictive of success in Anatomy and Physiology, and it contributes …

Lung cancer is one of the world’s leading causes of cancer-related deaths with poor prognosis, and difficult to treat malignancy. Several genetic, and environmental factors including cigarette smoking and hypertension have been linked as the common risk factors for lung cancer. To that end, multiple mechanisms have been proposed in regulating tumor growth, angiogenesis, and metastasis, as well as the efficacy of cancer therapy in experimental lung cancer models. Importantly, studies including ours, have shown that exposure to reactive oxygen species (ROS)-generating stimuli such as cigarette smoking, and cancer therapy produced oxidized lipids with platelet-activating factor (PAF) agonistic activity from …

High-throughput genome-scale studies are becoming increasingly common as a means to discover genetic interactions. This methodology is particularly efficient when performed in the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Here, we (1) overexpress a large human gene library in yeast to assess how many of them are toxic, and (2) use the list of genes generated above to refine and analyze human genes previously identified to enhance toxicity of two ALS-associated proteins, FUS and TDP-43. By introducing each of 13,500 human genes into yeast, we demonstrated that the majority of these genes (about 97%) are not toxic to yeast when overexpressed. These …

Visualisation of neural tracts in the human brain has previously been accomplished using two dimensional (2D) representational formats. In most cases, pre-operative visualisation is through the medium of 2D MRI image slices, representing coordinates in the brain through a combination of axial, sagittal, and coronal orthographic viewpoints. Software such as ExploreDTI can visualise off-axis viewpoints, however this method is limited to 2.5D image representations. The use of such 2D representations can require significant training in order to contextualise real-world 3D positions and accurately locate and identify neural tract pathways in the brain. Utilising anonymised tract data and advanced neuroimaging technologies …

Investigating The Benefits Of Virtual Reality On Student Acquisition Of 3d Anatomical Information, Dr. Kevin Flaherty, Juliana Pinheiro, Benjamin Karger
Celebration of Learning
Virtual reality (VR) technology is becoming more accessible within educational settings due to price decreases and greater software availability. VR is particularly useful for teaching anatomy, as students often struggle to learn the three-dimensional relationships between body structures from two-dimensional images in textbooks. Using funds from Augustana’s Pedagogy and Technology Grant, we purchased and assembled a VR workstation and began researching the effectiveness of VR in anatomy education. The early results of this research show that students exhibited substantial increases in their knowledge anatomical structures and their ability to reconstruct the three-dimensional relationships between anatomical structures after 30 minutes using …

Camel Anatomy; More Than Just A Hump, Michael Chase
Camel Anatomy; More Than Just A Hump, Michael Chase
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
The one-humped camel (Camelus dromedarius) is capable of living in extreme, arid environments due to its numerous anatomical adaptations. Its modified features of the muscular system, integument, skeletal system, and several internal organs allow this animal to survive in such harsh environmental conditions. Many of these adaptations allow for conservation of energy and water as well as improvement of locomotion to acquire scarce resources. In this paper we will look more closely at some of these adaptations and determine their function in promoting the survival and reproduction of the one-humped camel in desert environments.

Arterial Distribution Of The Human Aorta: An Examination Of The Evolutionary, Developmental, And Physiological Bases Of Asymmetry., Brandon Oddo, Cooker Storm
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
The study of anatomy contends that “form follows function”; a disciplinary theme purporting that anatomical structures (i.e., cells, tissues, and organs) have a shape that serves its proper function. With this in mind, it is unclear why human arterial distribution off the aortic arch is asymmetrical, while the corresponding venous anatomy is symmetrical. We investigated the evolutionary, developmental, and physiological bases for the asymmetry of aortic arch branches in humans. First, we investigated the cardiovascular anatomy of ancestral species to determine if, and at what level, anatomical divergence (from aortic symmetry to asymmetry) occurs. Second, we examined the formation of …

Calpain-Calpastatin System In Peripheral Nerve Myelination And Demyelination, Domenica Elizabeth Drouet Saltos
Calpain-Calpastatin System In Peripheral Nerve Myelination And Demyelination, Domenica Elizabeth Drouet Saltos
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Myelin is the structure formed by glial cells that electrically insulates axons aiding in propagation of action potentials. Disruption of myelin sheath (demyelination) is common to neurological diseases, such as multiple sclerosis (MS). The calcium-dependent protease, calpain, is known to modulate myelination during central nervous system (CNS) development. Endogenous calpain inhibitor, calpastatin, regulates calpain activity. The calpain-calpastatin system has been implicated in the CNS demyelination occurring in diseases. Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is a hereditary demyelinating polyneuropathy affecting proper functioning of peripheral nerves, demonstrating the importance of myelin in the peripheral nervous system (PNS). However, calpain’s role in the mechanism(s) of …

Proprioception is an important sensation capable due to proprioceptive sensory neuron afferents found in muscles in the periphery being processed by the central nervous system. The nervous system is a complex system that continues to develop and mature as an animal ages. Much is not known of proprioceptive neurons and how they develop with time. Calcium is an important molecule in maintaining action potentials and homeostasis in neurons which can be studied to understand a variety of things about a neuron. This study uses genetically encoded calcium indicators to tag parvalbumin positive cells in the dorsal root ganglion (DRG) in …
