Nanofibers represent an innovative class of materials with diverse applications, including tissue engineering and drug delivery.¹ Among the most promising areas of research is their use in surgical sutures, particularly for complex orthopedic injuries with high re-tear rates. Background: Wernicke’s encephalopathy is a life-threatening neurological disorder caused by thiamine deficiency, most commonly associated with alcoholism. However, postoperative nutritional deficiencies in young patients undergoing bariatric procedures are increasingly recognized. This case is unique due to the rapid succession of bariatric and cholecystectomy surgeries, development of classic Wernicke’s symptoms with a normal MRI, and diagnostic delay due to overlapping differential diagnoses including intracranial hypotension and myelopathy.

BACKGROUND - This case series details the novel use of the Perclose ProGlide closure device to successfully repair three separate cases of iatrogenic femoral pseudoaneurysms (PSAs) without attempting other modalities first. Conventional treatment methods of ultrasound-guided compression, duplex-directed thrombin injection (DDTI), or open surgical repair were contraindicated in these patients due to unique anatomy or advanced comorbidities.

Background: Acute Valve Syndrome (AVS) identifies a high-risk cohort of aortic stenosis (AS) patients with poor outcomes following aortic valve replacement (AVR), but the spectrum of risk within this group has yet to be fully explored. We sought to evaluate whether admission markers facilitated risk stratification of 1-year mortality in an AVS cohort.

Methods: In a retrospective cohort study (MIMIC-IV v3.1), we identified 2,380 adults who underwent AVR between 2008–2019. Patients were classified as AVS or progressive valvular disease (PVD). Methods: The project obtained nasopharyngeal, tympanic, and bladder/rectal temperature measurements from twenty CPB cases. Zinner syndrome (ZS) is a rare congenital condition characterized by the triad of unilateral renal agenesis, ipsilateral seminal vesicle cyst, and ipsilateral ejaculatory duct obstruction. ZS is suspected to be caused by the malformation of the mesonephric duct during embryogenesis. The incomplete migration of the ureteric bud results in ipsilateral renal agenesis and ejaculatory duct obstruction. The remaining gonad develops with inadequate seminal fluid drainage, leading to the formation of seminal vesicle cysts. ZS is often asymptomatic, leading to challenges in diagnosis, particularly in adolescents. Symptoms can include pain, dysuria, pollakisuria, perineal pain, epididymitis, and pain after ejaculation. Distal ulna fractures frequently accompany distal radius fractures but are often underappreciated in both clinical and research contexts. While conservative management is frequently employed, particularly following volar locking plate (VLP) fixation of the radius, certain indications, such as distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) instability, comminution, or high-energy trauma, may necessitate surgical fixation. This study evaluates patient-reported outcomes among patients with distal radius fractures treated operatively, comparing those with and without concomitant distal ulna fractures, and further stratifying based on the method of ulna fixation.

Fat grafting (FG) and liposuction are widely performed aesthetic procedures with associated fat embolism risks. However, no comprehensive review has specifically mapped the anatomical distribution and technical causes of fat embolism events across these procedures. This review aims to characterize regional and procedural frequencies of fat embolism to inform safer surgical practices. A review was conducted using PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Cochrane. Included studies were English-language case reports/series, retrospective reviews, and systematic analyses reporting fat embolism following liposuction or FG. This review evaluates how laser atherectomy compares to angioplasty and stenting for revascularization in patients with heart failure and complex coronary artery disease (CAD). The review explored whether laser atherectomy could improve procedural success and reduce the risk of restenosis, major cardiovascular events (MACE), and other complications. A search across multiple medical databases yielded six studies directly comparing these treatment methods. Findings showed that procedural success rates were similar between laser atherectomy (ranging from 80% to 95%) and angioplasty/stenting (85% to 98%). This poster highlights current and updated guidelines for chemical and mechanical prophylaxis for venous thromboembolism in patients undergoing major and minor orthopedic surgery. Existing and new potential therapies were reviewed, as well as an analysis into the lack of high-quality risk-prediction score calculators to improve personalization of prophylaxis regimens. Alongside a summary of existing and potential new prophylaxis protocols, a call to action to improve validity of said risk score calculators so as to improve patient outcomes and personalized medicine is made.

Objective. This study was conducted to determine whether utilization of the superior root of ansa cervicalis (SRAC) as the donor for phrenic nerve (PN) transfer is technically feasible. Background. In patients with high cervical spinal cord injury resulting in diaphragmatic paralysis, another donor, the spinal accessory nerve, has been used successfully to reinnervate the PN and restore diaphragmatic function. Introduction: Splenic angiosarcoma is an uncommon, malignant neoplasm of vascular endothelial origin. Given its unique nature and rupture potential, we present a case of perforated splenic angiosarcoma. Case Description: A 79 year-old female with a history of vocal cord paralysis, recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy, and thyroidectomy presented for a second time with stridor and worsening shortness of breath. Due to desaturation and bradycardia, unsuccessful intubation led to a tracheostomy and ICU transfer. She stabilized and showed no major complications for seven days. Background: In adolescents with significant dysmenorrhea, empiric therapy via analgesics and hormonal medications is considered gold standard. However, those with refractory pain may have endometriosis. Thus, it is recommended to engage in shared medical decision making with these patients regarding diagnostic laparoscopy. If endometriosis is detected intraoperatively, these lesions are often fulgurated or excised. There currently is a paucity of data regarding the benefits of diagnostic laparoscopy and destruction of lesions in the adolescent population.
