Rate Of Intraoperative Proximal Femoral Fractures With Automated Broaching, Tyler Radack, Hope Skibicki, Julian Zangrilli, Ruchir Nanavati, Cole Kleinman, Michael Harrer

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Intraoperative proximal femur fractures (PFF) occur in 3.7% of total hip arthroplasties (THA) using the standard mallet broaching technique and increase a patient’s risk of revision surgery from 3.4% to 10%. The Depuy KINCISE automatic broaching system is designed to attenuate the risk of these fractures by applying consistent co-linear force to the broach. The aim of this study is to determine if the KINCISE system decreases the rate of intraoperative PFF fracture during THA compared to the standard mallet technique.

Those who suffer a partial thickness ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) tear often undergo a period of nonoperative management including physical therapy rehabilitation. This treatment is aimed at optimizing range of motion (ROM) and strengthening the supporting structures around the elbow to help offload the UCL.

Unfortunately, some of these patients fail nonoperative management and require surgical intervention. This creates a unique set of patients who essentially underwent “prehabilitation” prior to their UCL surgery. Prehabilitation is considered a period of structured physical therapy rehabilitation aimed at strengthening structures surrounding an injured tendon or ligament, to allow for dissipation of stress away …

Factors And Outcomes Contributing To Pelvic Lymph Node Dissection In Non-Muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer, Young Son, Brian Thomas, Lance Earnshaw, Mark Quiring, Erica Martel, Benjamin Fink, Raeann Dalton, Thomas Mueller, Philip Dorsey

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Bladder cancer represents the 6th most common for men and is classified into muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) and non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). NMIBC (T1, Ta, Tis), accounting for approximately 75% of new bladder cancer diagnoses, is limited to the mucosa, submucosa, and lamina propria. Studies have approximated the rate of recurrence in NMIBC between 50 - 70%, which sometimes progresses to muscle invasive disease. Management of NMIBC ranges from surveillance, intravesical chemotherapy to radical cystectomy (RC) and is dependent upon the TNM staging and grading of the tumor. Clinically, staging is determined via imaging, physical exam, and histology on transurethral …

Complications Of Fitz-Hugh-Curtis Syndrome In A Teenage Female: A Case Presentation, Marina Cugliari, Trupti Pandit

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Fitz-Hugh-Curtis Syndrome is a manifestation of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) associated with Chlamydia trachomatis infections and less frequently with Neisseria gonorrhea.

PID affects sexually active women (15-30 years old) and accounts for 750,000 cases each year.

The case presented illustrates a female who presented with a small bowel obstruction and appendicitis, who was incidentally found to have Fitz-Hugh-Curtis Syndrome on laparoscopic exam.

Appendiceal Diverticulum Masquerading As Acute Appendicitis, Aesha Patel, Asad Abbas, Ratul Bhattacharyya, Dana Galaktionova

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Appendiceal diverticula present as rare clinical findings and are most often confused with acute appendicitis due to similar presentation. The incidence in such cases is reported at a rate no greater than 1%.

We present a rare case of a 65-year-old female treated for acute appendicitis who was instead found to have acute sequelae of appendiceal diverticulosis.

An 18 year old G1P1 female, 3 months postpartum presented to the emergency department with abdominal pain that was diagnosed as cholelithiasis and choledocholithiasis. Following a cholecystectomy surgery, the patient developed weakness and gait abnormality that was diagnosed as neuralgia.

Meralgia paresthetica is such an understudied diagnosis that its incidence is unknown. Patients who are 30-85 years old, obese, diabetic, and/or pregnant are at an increased risk for the condition. This case calls attention to the underdiagnosis of meralgia paresthetica in pediatric patients with comorbidities. As aforementioned risk factors increase in the pediatric population due to societal and environmental factors, …

Arthroscopic Medial Meniscus Transplant Utilizing A Multi-Technique Fixation, Elizabeth Ford, Michael Defrance, Sean Mcmillan

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Arthroscopic medial meniscus transplantation can be a daunting procedure for even the most skilled surgeon. While all-inside suture fixation devices have improved, the ability to successfully perform this procedure via arthroscopy is reliant upon the surgeon's ability to utilize a variety of fixation techniques. Based upon the review of the literature, this paper is the first of it's kind describing the methodology and algorithm for completing an arthroscopic medial meniscus transplant using four techniques.

Torsion Does Not Affect Early Vein Graft Patency In The Rat Femoral Artery Model, Amro Harb, Maxwell Levi, Akio Kozato, Robert J. Strauch

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

BACKGROUND:

Torsion of vein grafts is a commonly cited reason for graft failure in clinical setting. Many microsurgery training courses have incorporated vein graft procedures in their curricula, and vein graft torsion is a common technical error made by the surgeons in these courses. To improve our understanding of the clinical reproducibility of practicing vein graft procedures in microsurgery training courses, this study aims to determine if torsion can lead to early vein graft failure in nonsurvival surgery rat models.

METHODS:

Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into five cohorts with five rats per cohort for a total of 25 rats. Cohorts …
