A Rare Case Of Successful Resolution Of Bifurcation Stenosis Using Double Kissing Crush Stenting Technique, Greeshma Molugu, Tony Alacron, Karthik Anand, Machaiah Madhrira

North Texas GME Research Forum 2026

Introduction: Bifurcation lesions are associated with greater procedural complexity and consequently are at higher risk for stent restenosis. Bifurcation lesions are still technically challenging even in the era of modern stents. High incidence of restenosis both in the main vesseI and side branch Iimits the Iong-term prognosis. We present a rare case of successful resolution of bifurcation stenosis in a patient by using the double kissing (DK) crush stenting technique.

Case Description: A 52-year-old male patient with a past medical history of hypertension presented to the hospital for elective left heart catheterization as a part of an evaluation for a …

Utilizing Femoral Metaphyseal Sleeves In Primary Total Knee Arthroplasty For Post-Traumatic Osteoarthritis: A Case Report, Zachary Sukin, Adam Dentinger, Jeremiah Earl

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Background

Total knee arthroplasty in younger patients presents a heightened risk of postoperative complications and implant failures compared to older populations, particularly in those with posttraumatic arthritis. These challenges necessitate careful consideration and specialized approaches to optimize the outcomes in this patient demographic.

Case Presentation

A 43-year-old man presented with left knee pain resulting from a traumatic lawn mower injury, causing an intraarticular distal femur, at the age of 6. The injury led to a limb-length discrepancy for which he underwent 2 limb-lengthening procedures in his early 20s. Radiographs demonstrated advanced posttraumatic osteoarthritis, and the patient elected to proceed with …

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Background

Aspiration of dental instruments is a rare event that carries potentially serious complications when it occurs, especially in older patients, where protective reflexes are diminished. Clinical management may be difficult because of the risk of granulation tissue and different retrieval strategies according to the object’s characteristics. In this report, we describe the case of an 84-year-old man who aspirated a dental bur during a routine dental procedure, necessitating immediate intervention. Timely and precise management was essential to avert severe complications.

Case Presentation

During a routine dental procedure, an 84-year-old man aspirated a bud-shaped cross-cut carbide dental bur. Despite initial …

Incidence Of Allergic Reactions To Cefazolin In Patients With Penicillin Allergy Undergoing Operative Repair Of Pelvis Or Extremity Fracture, Hans Drawbert, Laclan Anderson, Marisa Fat, John Riehl

North Texas Research Forum 2025

Introduction Surgical site infections (SSI) account for 20% of all healthcare associated infections with an estimated yearly cost of $3.3 billion in the US alone (1). Cefazolin (Ancef) is a commonly used prophylactic antibiotic in orthopaedic surgery and has been shown to reduce SSI compared to other antibiotics, but potential cross-reactivity in patients with a penicillin allergy (PA) leads to concerns regarding the safety of cefazolin administration. This study evaluates the incidence of allergic reactions to cefazolin in patients undergoing orthopaedic surgery with a PA. Methods A retrospective cross-sectional database review study was conducted. Patients aged 18 or over who …

Facial Hair And Infection: A Beardly Question With A Bald Spot In The Literature, Kyle O'Connor, Samuel Stegelmann, Hans Drawbert, Edwin Dudoussat, John T. Riehl

North Texas Research Forum 2025

Background: Upholding a sterile environment in orthopedic surgery is vital to minimize surgical site infections (SSIs). Among personal protective equipment, beard covers for surgical staff with facial hair have been recommended as a measure to prevent contamination. However, their effectiveness in reducing SSIs remains uncertain, especially in orthopedic procedures that often involve high-risk implants and extended exposure of surgical fields. This systematic review assesses the current evidence on the role of beard covers in infection prevention during surgery. Methods: Using PRISMA guidelines, databases were searched for studies investigating facial hair, beard covers, and infection risk. Eligible studies included comparative studies, …

North Texas Research Forum 2025

Introduction: Pericardial effusion resulting from uremic pericarditis is a complication associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD). In patients with advanced CKD or End Stage renal disease (ESRD) renal transplant is the definitive treatment to improve long term outcomes. However, the presence of a large pericardial effusion poses a risk of hemodynamic compromise during transplant surgery. Options of stabilizing the patient with aggressive dialysis, pericardiocentesis or pericardial window can be considered. Here we present a case of a patient with advanced CKD who underwent pre-emptive kidney transplant and in three months had complete resolution of a large pericardial effusion noted pre-operatively. …
