Partial Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return: To Fix Or Not To Fix?, Akshaj Pole, Jennifer Austin, Amnah Andrabi

North Texas GME Research Forum 2024

Patient is a 56-year-old male with a past medical history of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, prior MVA with chest trauma, and coronary artery disease with 2 prior stents in the obtuse marginal and right coronary artery who was brought to the ED for severe chest pain. Patient was immediately taken to the cath lab for cardiac intervention. Patient was identified to have 90-95% stenosis of his left circumflex but was unable to be stented due to tortuosity of the vessel and tight lesion. Due to patient’s multivessel coronary artery disease and newly diagnosed diabetes, patient was referred to cardiothoracic surgery …

Association Of Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonist Treatment With Perioperative And Postoperative Complications In Patients Undergoing Elective Bariatric Surgery, Justin Sanchez, Enith Espinosa, Sean Sojdie, Michael Green, Lauren Wonderly

North Texas GME Research Forum 2024

Glucagon-like peptide receptor agonists (GLP-1 RA) are FDA-approved medications for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, and obesity, and are also beneficial in cardiovascular risk reduction. However, due to known GLP-1 RA adverse effects, notably delayed gastric emptying, the ASA has implemented GLP-1RA guidelines aiming to minimize potential complications related to GLP-1 RA use in patients undergoing procedures requiring general anesthesia. With the ever-increasing number of patients being prescribed GLP-1 RAs, more research needs to be conducted to investigate their potential impact in other areas of healthcare. This retrospective study aims to compare surgical outcomes before and following the …

Comminuted Talar Neck And Body Fracture: A Case Report, Chris Zimmer, Roshni Patel, Warren Windram Jan 2024

Comminuted Talar Neck And Body Fracture: A Case Report, Chris Zimmer, Roshni Patel, Warren Windram

East Florida Division GME Research Day 2024

Format: Case study

Length of follow up: 12 months

Level of evidence: IV

Classification: Trauma

Purpose: A combination of talar neck and body fractures are extremely rare which make up approximately <1% of all fractures in the body. They are most commonly associated with high energy trauma such as falling from a great height, motor vehicle accident, etc. Talar fractures are challenging problems to treat in terms of fixation, rates of avascular necrosis and much more. The purpose of this case report is to demonstrate that even with a severe talar fracture salvage is possible with proper surgical technique and understanding of the unique fracture pattern.

Case study: One patient underwent ORIF of a comminuted talar neck and body fracture with a lateral bridge plate and medial based interfragmentary compression screw.

Procedures: Open reduction internal fixation of talar neck and body fracture.

Results: 1 patient who demonstrated clinical and radiographic signs of healing of a talar neck and body fracture.

Analysis & Discussions: The rates of avascular necrosis of talar neck and body fractures varies …

East Florida Division GME Research Day 2023

Introduction: Vertebroplasty/kyphoplasty are common procedures used to treat vertebral compression fractures. The most common precipitating factor is osteoporosis, although there are other causes such as trauma, spinal tumors, etc. These procedures utilize fluoroscopy by inserting a trocar into the pathological vertebra. Once the trocar is in place, bone cement is then inserted into the vertebra in a vertebroplasty to help stabilize the fracture. In a kyphoplasty, a balloon is inserted after the trocar and is slowly inflated to correct the collapsed vertebra before injecting the cement. These procedures are commonly performed in an outpatient setting and generally yield good outcomes …

Race/Ethnicity And Morbidity/Mortality In Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: 2016 Usa Study, Victorien Meray, Rupa Seetharamaiah

East Florida Division GME Research Day 2023

Background: Social determinants of health, such as race and ethnicity, can have a significant impact on people's health and well-being. People of color are more likely to experience poverty, lack of access to healthcare, and discrimination, which can lead to worse health outcomes. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the gallbladder. It is the most common gastrointestinal surgery performed in the United States. In this study, we sought to determine if there is an association between race/ethnicity and morbidity/mortality in adult patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Methods: We conducted a non-concurrent cohort study of patients over 18 years old …

Comparing 30-Day Outcomes Of Open Versus Endovascular Revascularization For Chronic Limb-Threatening Ischemia, David Kosoy, Waseem Wahood Jan 2023

Comparing 30-Day Outcomes Of Open Versus Endovascular Revascularization For Chronic Limb-Threatening Ischemia, David Kosoy, Waseem Wahood

East Florida Division GME Research Day 2023

Abstract: Chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) is a serious condition that can lead to amputation and even death. Open and endovascular revascularization are two common treatment options for CLTI, but the optimal treatment approach remains controversial. This study compared the 30-Day outcomes of open and endovascular revascularization using data from the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) database. The study included 6,780 patients who underwent open bypass with saphenous vein, 4,201 patients who underwent open bypass with alternative conduit, and 8,887 patients who underwent endovascular intervention. Compared to open bypass with saphenous vein, endovascular intervention was associated with a higher rate …
