According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) more than 932,000 people in the US have died since 1999 from a drug overdose. Just about 75% of drug overdose deaths in 2020 involved Opioid, which suggests that the US is in an Opioid overdose epidemic. Identifying individuals likely to develop Opioid use disorder (OUD) can help public health in planning effective prevention, intervention, drug overdose and recovery policies. Further, a better understanding of prediction of overdose leading to the neurobiology of OUD may lead to new therapeutics. In recent years, very limited work has been done using statistical …

Combining Novel Direction Modulated Brachytherapy Tandem-And-Ovoids Applicators For Treatment Planning Of Multi-Institutional Cervical Cancer Cases: Removing Needles In Intracavitary-Interstitial Techniques, Sharmin Alam Jan 2023

Combining Novel Direction Modulated Brachytherapy Tandem-And-Ovoids Applicators For Treatment Planning Of Multi-Institutional Cervical Cancer Cases: Removing Needles In Intracavitary-Interstitial Techniques, Sharmin Alam

Theses and Dissertations

Lack of standard guidelines for optimal needle insertion during high-dose-rate (HDR) intracavitary-interstitial (IC-IS) brachytherapy of the cervix means a sophisticated and technical skillset of inserting needles next to IC applicators must be developed to enhance plan quality. This study sought to evaluate the performance of two separate direction modulated brachytherapy (DMBT) tandem applicators used in conjunction with one set of novel DMBT ovoids, to effectively obviate the need for IS needles.

A cohort of 32 retrospective clinical HDR brachytherapy plans was re-planned with Varian’s BrachyVision® treatment planning system, using VEGO® inverse optimization algorithm, with dose heterogeneity accounted for …

A Case Study On Treatment Of Subcoracoid Impingement In An Overhead Athlete With Manual Therapy, M Mennell Jan 2023

A Case Study On Treatment Of Subcoracoid Impingement In An Overhead Athlete With Manual Therapy, M Mennell

Clinical Practice in Athletic Training

Introduction: Subcoracoid impingement of the shoulder is a condition that occurs when the tendons or soft tissues in the shoulder are compressed or pinched between the coracoid process and the humeral head. It is also suspected that subcoracoid impingement can occur when the humerus translates anteriorly, decreasing the subcoracoid space. This impingement can cause pain, inflammation, and limited mobility in the shoulder joint. All kinds of impingement are typically multifactorial, and have several areas that need to be addressed. The purpose of this case report is to examine the effects of therapeutic exercise as well as manual therapy on subcoracoid …

The neurodegenerative disease field has enjoyed extremely limited success in the development of effective therapeutics. One potential reason is the lack of disease models that yield accurate predictions and optimal therapeutic targets. Standard clinical trials have pre-determined a single treatment modality, which may be unrelated to the primary drivers of neurodegeneration. Recent proof-of-concept clinical trials using a precision medicine approach suggest a new model of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) as a chronic innate encephalitis that creates a network insufficiency. Identifying and addressing the multiple potential contributors to cognitive decline for each patient may represent a more effective strategy. Here we review …

A Quality Improvement Project To Improve Management Of Urinary Tract Infections In A System Of Pediatric Urgent Care Centers, Benjamin Klick, Tammy Speerhas, Jessica Parrott, Jeffrey Bobrowitz, Anne Mcevoy, Debra Conrad, Theresa Guins Jan 2023

A Quality Improvement Project To Improve Management Of Urinary Tract Infections In A System Of Pediatric Urgent Care Centers, Benjamin Klick, Tammy Speerhas, Jessica Parrott, Jeffrey Bobrowitz, Anne Mcevoy, Debra Conrad, Theresa Guins

Ellmer School of Nursing Faculty Publications

Background and objective: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common problem in pediatric urgent care medicine. There are multiple quality improvement (QI) projects related to the management of UTIs documented in the pediatric literature. We developed a project to decrease the prescribing of ultimately unneeded antibiotics for possible UTIs in a pediatric urgent care setting. A similar project has not been described in the pediatric literature.

Methods: We first reviewed the charts of patients presenting to a system of pediatric urgent care centers with a possible UTI over a 2-year period. We then launched a QI project with three plan, …

Slowing It Down: The Impact Of A Core Stabilization Program Of Hypermobile Sprinters, T Spears, J Gonzalez-Pons, J Debose Jan 2023

Slowing It Down: The Impact Of A Core Stabilization Program Of Hypermobile Sprinters, T Spears, J Gonzalez-Pons, J Debose

Clinical Practice in Athletic Training

Background: Low back pain (LBP) is a common complaint in sprinters, and it can present itself in many ways. One study published in 2019 surveyed 2539 runners; 22.6% of them reported LBP of some kind at least once within that year.5 LBP can occur in sprinters for many reasons. One study noted that muscle weakness, imbalance, and improper recruitment of hip and/or core musculature are a few sources of LBP in athletes.4 The aim of this study is to examine the effectiveness of a core stabilization program on athletes suffering from lumbar facet hypermobility. Differential Diagnosis: Conditions that are typically …

A Case Report Of The Evaluation And Management Of Low Back Pain In A High School Basketball Player, K Leveston, K Neelon, E Ephran Jan 2023

A Case Report Of The Evaluation And Management Of Low Back Pain In A High School Basketball Player, K Leveston, K Neelon, E Ephran

Clinical Practice in Athletic Training

Background: Low back pain can be a tough injury to endure, especially in the growing high school athlete.3 LBP in a high school athlete can be caused by various factors, such as structural deformities, mobility deficits, and so much more. The majority of LBP in adolescents is nonspecific LBP, which is defined as LBP that does not cause systemic or structural changes.5 Nonspecific LBP is often a result of other etiologies such as hypermobile or hypomobile segments of the spine, hip mobility deficits, gait, sleeping positions, or improper weightlifting form. Differential Diagnoses: Other possible diagnoses of LBP in adolescents could …
