An Innovative Testing Protocol To Study Foot And Ankle Kinetics During Early Stance Phase Of Gait, Thomas E. Stewart

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

The objective of this study was to improve upon existing testing platform limitations with respect to foot and ankle mechanics in the sagittal plane during dorsiflexion and plantar flexion. The intent was to develop a multi-loading protocol that simulated aspects of early stance phase of walking gait. This data were used to evaluate the influence an Achilles load has on the kinematic profile of the ankle complex. Also, resulting kinematic profile data can be used to evaluate ligament/tendon effects, ankle arthroplasty, and various surgical techniques.

A pair of cadaveric human feet, from the same donor, 50 years of age were …

N-Glycosylation Dictates Proper Processing Of Organic Anion Transporting Polypeptide 1b1, Juan Yao, Weifang Hong, Jiujiu Huang, Kai Zhan, Hong Huang, Mei Hong

School of Information Faculty Publications

Organic anion transporting polypeptides (OATPs) have been extensively recognized as key determinants of absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion (ADME) of various drugs, xenobiotics and toxins. Putative N-glycosylation sites located in the extracellular loops 2 and 5 is considered a common feature of all OATPs and some members have been demonstrated to be glycosylated proteins. However, experimental evidence is still lacking on how such a post-translational modification affect the transport activity of OATPs and which of the putative glycosylation sites are utilized in these transporter proteins. In the present study, we substituted asparagine residues that are possibly involved in N-glycosylation with …

Investigating Axonal Biology Using Microfluidic Devices, James Deyling, Brittany Kastan

Undergraduate Research Posters 2012

During nervous system development, various diffusing biomolecules play a critical role in neurite outgrowth and guidance, resulting in the formation of a complex circuitry. However, the precise mechanism by which these molecules are spatio-temporally delivered to the growing tip of the neurites is unclear. Overall, the results suggest to the utility of this device for studying neurobiology, tissue engineering and cell migration.

A Consensus Model For Electroencephalogram Data Via The S-Transform, Andrew Coady Young May 2012

A Consensus Model For Electroencephalogram Data Via The S-Transform, Andrew Coady Young

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A consensus model combines statistical methods with signal processing to create a better picture of the family of related signals. In this thesis, we will consider 32 signals produced by a single electroencephalogram (EEG) recording session. The consensus model will be produced by using the S-Transform of the individual signals and then normalized to unit energy. A bootstrapping process is used to produce a consensus spectrum. This leads to the consensus model via the inverse S-Transform of the consensus spectrum. The method will be applied to both a control and experimental EEG to show how the results can be used …

Comparing Functional Outcomes On Open Reduction And Internal Fixation For Acute Perilunate Dislocation And Fracture-Dislocations: A Systematic Review, Melissa Mundy Allen Jan 2012

Comparing Functional Outcomes On Open Reduction And Internal Fixation For Acute Perilunate Dislocation And Fracture-Dislocations: A Systematic Review, Melissa Mundy Allen

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Outcomes based research on trauma-related orthopaedic injuries is imperative for gauging the effectiveness of current surgical procedures and thereby maximizing the patient's functional status. In patients sustaining perilunate dislocations (PLD) and fracture-dislocations (PLFD) following a traumatic fall on an outstretched hand, early open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) is widely considered the standard of care for acute cases, but evidence supporting optimal techniques and materials is limited in a body of literature consisting mainly of small retrospective case series and expert opinion. The aims of this study were to compare functional outcomes of PLD and PLFD by surgical technique …

Comprehensive evaluation of PTSD includes diagnostic interviews, self-report testing, and physiological reactivity measures. It is often difficult and costly to diagnose PTSD due to patient access and the variability in symptoms presented. Additionally, potential patients are often reluctant to seek help due to the stigma associated with the disorder. A voice-based automated system that is able to remotely screen individuals at high risk for PTSD and monitor their symptoms during treatment has the potential to make great strides in alleviating the barriers to cost effective PTSD assessment and progress monitoring. In this paper we present a voice-based automated Tele-PTSD Monitor …

Does Mucosal Or Serosal Side Approximation Affect The Efficacy Of Native Small Intestinal Submucosa Graft Repair Of Neurotmesis?, Ferro Nguyen

PCOM Biomedical Studies Student Scholarship

FDA approved, commercial, modified porcine small intestinal submucosa (SIS) is utilized clinically for peripheral nerve repair. However, if measures can be put in place to insure its safety, native SIS prepared from locally available porcine resources would provide easy access to an inexpensive alternative. Both forms of this material lack antigenicity, have inherit properties which provides a favorable growth environment, and have been successfully used experimentally as a natural conduit in peripheral nerve repair. Successful recovery from a peripheral nerve injury is dependent on the efficiency and speed of axonal regeneration to the point of distal interruption of the nerve. …
